Chapter 2, The Other Side [6]
"So how's life in Hanasho treating you, Esau?"
They sat in a small restaurant near Hanasho's main plaza, a casual meeting place that they frequented quite often. The interior was modeled after what seemed to imitate a traditional dojo-- with floors of paneled oak, neatly crafted wooden chairs and tables, an abundance of space, and paintings depicting samurai, folktales, and the Taki no Kuni countryside, adorning the white walls. The front entrance to the restaurant didn't have a wall. It was, instead, a large panel of glass that let the sunshine flow in naturally, encompassing the entirety of the room with a soft, warm glow of light.
The man with the red-mane swiped up a pair of chopsticks from the table, diving them into his tempura udon soup as he replied, distractedly coiling the noodles around the eating utensils. "Well, you know... same as always." He lied, his nonchalant gaze briefly shifting upwards, as Gear took a sip of his green tea. He didn't glance for too long, however, knowing how well Gear could pick up on things. Esau didn't like to worry his comrades. So, when he found the silence that followed unsettling, he immediately continued. "Ah! I got a date with Chinatsu. We're going to Tojo Falls."
Gear bothered to pause from drinking his tea. Just long enough to form a two inch smile, and grunt-- which was, basically, his way of chuckling. "It only took you a year." He commented, his taunting smile growing wider as his eyes met Esau's own. "Wow. I'm genuinely impressed, Esau."
The sarcasm was obvious and, in response, the red-maned man narrowed his eyes. "Yeah, yeah-- stop being such a smart-ass." He'd murmur, bringing the coiled noodles to his mouth, and slurping them all up. "And what about you, Gear?" He'd continue, swallowing down the last of his chewed food. "What have you been up to lately? More degrading jobs?"
He seemed to have been attempting to make a snide remark, but Gear did not notice it, casually taking yet another sip of his aromatic green tea. When he was done, he would calmly reply. "You could say that. I've begun working with a detective agency as of recent. The pay is shit, more often than not, but I get to work on my own schedule. So that's good."
"It's great!" Esau immediately replies, beaming. "Seems like you've got something steady now. Next thing you know, you'll be getting married to some broad, and changing spoiled baby diapers'll be your pastime."
Gear gives him a displeased look, and sets his cup of tea down on the table. "Ugh." He grumbles, bringing a single hand to his forehead. "I think simply hearing that gives me a headache." Esau, in the meantime, releases a laugh.
