Die Kunst des Fechtens teaches practitioners a variety of practical combat skills, using the longsword, dagger, and grappling.
Longsword
The longsword, as one of the most versatile blades, is the main focus of der Kunst des Fechtens, various grips imitating spears warhammers, and maces to deal with numerous obstacles. The blade is used in a variety of ways. Through various stances, a variety of blows are thrown, aimed to both debilitate and slay the foe.
Stances
An important part of longsword use in der Kunst des Fechtens are the numerous stances the swordsman must employ. Each stance allows for different strikes, and the skilled warrior is known to constantly switch stances as the situation requires. Switching between stances is quick, as it requires no more than a shift of the blade and change of weight.
_______________________________
As defense is mostly neglected, swordsmen are expected to be ferocious and daring, constantly willing to impose pressure upon the foe. When the longsword is not swung in a conventional manner, it is used in one of the following ways:
Halbschwerd
The swordsman grips the center of the blade with the left hand and clenches the hilt tightly, using the longsword for thrusting maneuvers, efficient in dealing with armored foes.
Mordschlag
The swordsman holds the blade in verse, gripping the blade strongly while using the pommel to strike the foe in a manner similar to a warhammer. These ferocious blows unleash a terrifying amount of bludgeoning force, capable of fracturing and breaking bones.
Knauf
The pommel can be used in a manner other than the Mordschlag with a more conventional grip, similar to a mace. These pommel strikes can disorient foes, for they come in strongly and quickly.

Grappling
Grappling is as important to der Kunst des Fechtens as the blade itself. Feints and strikes may lead into grapples, from which more blows are thrown. Grapples can also be used defensively, in an attempt to hinder the foe from completing their strikes. The savvy swordsman grapples in whatever way is necessary, be it standing or on the ground.
_______________________________
Dagger
The dagger is yet another weapon used in der Kunst des Fechtens. Unlike the longsword, the dagger is not used to create openings, but rather, employed when opportunity provides. The dagger is effective during grapples or in close quarter situations. The swordsman never uses the dagger by itself unless it is the last resort or allows for a killing blow.
