It was around four in the morning when Haru left the Hyūga Compounds; it was difficult, but necessary, to get up this early. He wanted to get a head-start on his current mission, as it’d probably take more than one day to complete. This would be a completely new experience for the young boy, as he’d never traveled like this before, or been away for more than a day. Even the idea of camping intrigued him.

It was still dark outside as he set off; the streets were empty except for an occasional person walking as he was. Haru could be seen wearing a slender, white long-sleeve shirt that slightly opened at his chest, slim black pants, and low-cut, black nin-sandals. A katana stretched diagonally along his back, and his hitae ate was fastened to his upper arm. He wore his usual impassive expression as he ambled through the village, and toward the gates.

His task was to eradicate Hi no Kuni of a certain species of animal, reported to be twice the size of the average human. This excited the boy more than anything, as he’d never seen such a beast. He knew killing them would be a challenge, but with his weapons and jutsu, the young Hyūga believed he could handle it. After several minutes of walking, he finally spotted the Konohagakure no Sato village gates.

He would arrive emanating confidence, and nod to the Shinobi on patrol before making his way out. It was one of the first times he’d ever left the village gates, and the freedom felt amazing. Of course, he wasn’t planning on leaving or anything quite yet, though the thoughts were constantly in the back of his head. He’d decided last night that if he was going to join another village, it would first require extensive planning, because there would be no turning back after it.

Eventually, he’d make a permanent departure from his home village; still, for now he’d have to focus on keeping up with his duties as a Genin, and Hyūga. Seeing that his mission was about to commence, he’d take the time to sit down and go over everything it entailed. He’d set his katana beside him, which would be useful in slaying the beasts, then sling his knapsack from off his back and into his lap. Once done, he’d pull out the note with a lengthy description.

Attached to the slip he’d been given with the mission information, was a small map and list documenting where these beasts had been seen. Fortunately, they were all concentrated into one area, towards the outskirts of Hi no Kuni. Unfortunately, It was a very long journey from the targets to his current location. He estimated that, if he did a combination of jogging and sprinting, it’d probably take two days.

There were a few other things in the bag, including camping equipment, and after checking it a few more times he’d gather everything back up and head on out. Traversing through the various trails in the dense forests of Hi no Kuni would have been a problem, if not for his Kekkai Genkai. He’d make sure to activate it, and then begin the long trek. The strange noises made by the forest animals startled the boy, but he adjusted to it after a while.

It had seemed like a fun mission back at the Hokage tower, but he wasn’t too sure now that he was here. Any anxiety he may have had was worked out of him from all of the running; especially when the sun began to rise. One good thing about traveling in the day was he didn’t have to worry about being mauled by any creatures, as there were other ninja, and non-ninja, also traveling to and from Konohagakure.

It was still a boring voyage, with very little to amuse the Hyūga except for the rare men dressed in clothing that made them look like they belonged to a circus act. It eventually got to the point where he began to want to get attacked by an animal, atleast then he’d have some sort of action. Ugh I wish this would hurry up! It may have been better if he’d had company, but there weren’t many Genin that Haru knew.

As he continued to race through Hi no Kuni, the sun began to go back down, and night fell over the large forests. It was now pitch-black, and if not for Haru’s Byakugan he would’ve had to call it quits. But instead, he kept on, way into the wee hours of the morning. As he began to slow down, fatigue took over and he nearly passed out. Instead, the Konoha-nin would find a huge tree, and climb up toward the top of it.

Once there, he’d lay out a blanket — so his cheek wouldn’t get grated by the bark — and then fall into a deep sleep. He dreamed of a lot of things that night, but most important were the thoughts that he’d been contemplating in the back of his head. He was far enough away from the village to make a getaway, though he wasn’t sure if that was the right choice yet. He felt like he should talk with his clan, but at the same time knew what they'd say.

He was confused as he woke up, the thoughts now fresh on his mind. But would have to forget about the topic as he rolled over, having forgotten he was asleep in a tree, and came close to falling thirty feet. Haru began to get his things together as he crawled back onto the middle of the branch, and subsequently descended onto the worn trail. Day two and he was way ahead of schedule; at his current pace he believed he’d arrive before afternoon.

As he expected, after a few more hours of traveling he had finally reached his destination. Getting back wouldn’t be fun, but he was more focused on exterminating these pests from Hi no Kuni for now. They had killed a civilian, which was more than enough to anger the boy. His Byakugan had been activated already, and he was now surveying the soon-to-be battlefield; it was a large, open expanse filled with separate packs of these large beasts.

From afar, they were no more than the size of his thumb; but zooming in with his Byakugan, he saw that these things were, in fact, about two or three times the size of him. They looked like oversized grizzly bears, and a lot of them seemed to be standing on two feet. He had read it, but seeing these creatures up close was completely different; and while he didn’t doubt himself, he knew it’d be much more challenging than he’d anticipated.

He wouldn’t be able to rush in the middle of them and start hacking away, there were simply too much. These beasts didn’t have the same feelings as humans — if they saw him, they would kill him. Consequently, he decided starting on one end, and working his way through would be better. Moreover, he also chose to wait until night; because, unless they had some sort of night vision, they’d be at a bigger disadvantage than he.

He’d make his way around the large plain, hidden in the shadows of large bushes and small trees in an attempt to scout the area. It would also be a good thing to figure the total number of animals he’d be dealing with, which would be made possible with his Kekkai Genkai. As he continued to inspect the region, he saw a small development on the outskirts of the plain. He’d guessed that was where the beasts had attacked, because there now stood a crudely built fort all around it.

He decided it’d be best to stay there today, and come back out later to take care of these monsters. The boy would quietly make his way toward the tiny civilization, wondering if they’d even allow him to enter. He knew that outsiders like these had built up animosity towards Konohagakure Shinobi, because of the aftermath of the Kyuubi attack. It’d been years since, he hoped these people hadn’t been holding a grudge that long.

As he drew near, Haru had at last got an exact number of the beasts roaming around — 24. It wasn’t anything crazy, but these things were huge. He suspected slaying all them would push him to his limit, if not kill him in the process. It was a C-rank mission though, and he believed it was possible. Now wasn’t the time to get down about anything; he’d reflect back on how he’d acted during his second mission, the thoughts snapped him back into reality.

“I’ve got this..”

A few more moments of marching through the shadows and he would appear at the front gates. Using his Byakugan, he was able to see that the small town was mainly made up of tents and huts. In them were a a bunch of weary, stressed looking people. Hopefully he’d be able to relieve figure out why, that was, if they’d allow him inside. He’d knock a few times before the gates were opened, revealing a short, burly man.

His eyes would survey the boy, not speaking, and then finally release a grunt signaling for him to enter. There was one straight path, leading to the largest tent at the end of small village. To his left and right stood smaller tents, shacks, huts, and a bunch of other things he guessed people lived in. The man would push at Haru’s back, forcing him to walk straight. He took it in stride, and made his way toward the large tent directly ahead.

The civilians all watched him as he made his way along the worn trail; it was weird, as if they’d never seen an outsider before. He produced a small smile, wanting to make sure he didn’t come off as mean in front of these people. A few of the men laughed as he walked past, though once he looked over they stopped. All in all, it was a very harsh atmosphere, and towards the end of the trail someone even threw a handful of dirt at him.

After a few more paces, he’d enter the tent, relieved to get away from everyone out there. Standing before him now was a tall, sturdy looking man, with broad shoulders and muscles popping out from everywhere. He wore a small crown on the top of his head, I guess he’s the leader here..? It almost made him laugh, why would you take pride in ruling something as small as this? Nonetheless, he wouldn’t show it, but instead take a seat and wait.

The group of men, including the leader, all talked in a small huddle. They stared back and forth, from eachother to Haru and back to eachother. It made the young Genin uncomfortable, though he dare not say anything this deep within their little society. Eventually, the one in charge would take a seat in front of him, the others surrounding the Hyūga with swords. He’d observe Haru with a look of disgust, pausing at the hitae-ate on his arm, and then speak
.
“Ahh, Konoha.. You got our reports then."

“Yes sir, I’m here to get rid of those beasts.”

The room erupted with laughter.

“HA!! Get rid? One Konoha Shinobi, taking on those things. HAHA!”

“Ninja aren't as weak as you think, I can handle the-“

“-HAHA! You hear that?! He can handle them!! HA!“

“Just tell me about these animals, I know they killed one of yo-“

“-more than one.. They’ll kill you too.. I guess it won’t hurt to inform you anyways… We don’t know where they came from, but it’s been war ever since. Their leader is worse than the rest, bigger, stronger.. He won’t come out until you’ve killed a few.. There were about 30 when they first came. We’ve killed a few, they’ve killed even more of us...”

“Why hasn’t that been reported??”

“Seeing as your gonna die soon, I’ll tell you. We reported one killing so they’d send one Shinobi.. This way, atleast we can get a few laughs before they overtake us.”

“That’s not right… I’ll take care of them, you’ll see..”

“Ha, no.. you’ll be slaughtered just like everyone else.. Haha, now leave.”

Listening to the man’s words wouldn’t help Haru, he was obviously a bit delusional, probably from the stress. It didn’t really matter, he’d prove to the civilians that Shinobi were still as powerful as ever. He knew he’d be able to take these things down, though the talk of a boss animal had sort of intimidated him. Not to the point of him backing down though, which he figured was the civilian’s reason for telling him; he wasn’t worried, his katana was sharp enough to cut through anything.

He’d wait for the darkness just outside the tiny village, as they’d kicked him out after speaking with the leader. It wasn’t just about eliminating these brutes anymore; it was now about showing the civilians that Shinobi were still a force to be reckoned with. They were all ignorant, as if the Kyūbi attack had been nothing, as if they could have done better to defend themselves. They couldn’t even defeat a band of animals…

They were all fools, and he refused to spare anymore thoughts on them. The sun was falling, and it was near time to start the real action. As the sun left for good, the boy would draw his Katana, that vehement smile beginning to etch itself across his face. He’d then activate his Byakugan, the new vision enabling him to easily see each of his foes. He’d initiate combat with a silent sprint, attacking the nearest beast with a slash toward the back of its neck.

Its head had been lopped off, with no resistance whatsoever. It was almost as if he were slicing through thin air; it’d make the Hyūga laugh as he jumped onto the next one. Its back was also to him, and from the front you could see a pale blade beginning to protrude from the stomach, and then sliding up to its chest. However, those were the only two that hadn’t noticed him, and now he was being rushed by the large horde.

“Oh shit..”

He’d turn and shunpo in the opposite direction, creating enough distance for himself to prepare for the onslaught to come. He’d dispatch the first few with slashes from his Katana, while kicking off a few others with a flip. Several in particular were extra-tough, but they were all very slow, and Haru was able to kill them almost at ease. He’d stab, slash, and cut his way through their ranks with unmatched speed. Everything was going well… Until their chief arrived.

If the others were huge, then this thing was Gigantic, and while its subordinates had looked like large grizzly bears, this one looked like the mix between a bear and rhinoceros. There were large horns jutting out from the fiends head, and it too stood on both feet. Where did these come from?! What land could possibly host animals such as this? He had heard of scary beings living in the forest of death, but this was something different.

Nevertheless, there was no time for backing down or even pausing. He’d continue his assault on the lesser creatures, though now began to pace himself. He knew the fight he was bound to have with the leader would sap him of all the stamina he had. The 24 had dwindled down, now at a meager 7, but they were coming as strong as ever. He had a few minor wounds, but nothing serious that couldn’t be dealt with later.

It came to the point when he and the leader were the only ones left. His Byakugan stared into the colossal beings eyes, simultaneously performing the hand-seals needed for Fukumi Hari. He hadn’t used a jutsu yet, for any of his missions, but felt like it was time. He’d mold chakra to his mouth as the beast began to charge. They were about 20 meters away, giving him time to gather the chakra and spit out 5 chakra needles aimed at the monster’s neck.

They’d all hit, piercing his hard skin in several different places; but it did nothing to stop it. Haru would roll to the left as it came near, narrowly avoiding it’s lethal horns. One false move and he was done for, the young Hyūga would take his time, waiting for the being to charge while he gathered more chakra. This time in the form of taijutsu, and after a few seconds it became visible as a white coating around his palm.

With the katana in his left hand, and chakra in his right, he’d rush the monster with as much speed as possible. As they charged for eachother, the boy would thrust forth his palm, finding its target half a second later. It’d struck the monster in between his horns, which had stopped him dead in his tracks. The force of the strike, as well as them running at eachother had killed it on impact. With his katana, he’d swiftly cut off its head in proof that it was dead.

After gathering himself, he’d head back to the gates of the small village. Upon showing the man what was in his hand, he was granted permission inside, and immediately cheered for. It seemed the villagers had all been watching, as their leader stood only a few steps away. He’d meet the man eye to eye; he gave the boy a look of extreme thankfulness, and then took the beasts head to be placed on a large pole in the center of the village.

After being apologized to for doubting the power of a Shinobi, he’d leave the village and set off towards Konoha. He’d take a look at the battlefield as he left, proud of how he’d managed. It’d been easier than he expected, and he now headed back to his village with a feeling of extreme satisfaction. He’d take his time heading back now, as he was exhausted and in no rush. Plus, it didn’t feel right running in blood-soaked clothes.

Days passed and he would eventually arrive back in his home village. He’d been gone for nearly five days, the longest he’d ever been away. It’d been an enjoyable task, filled with a ton of excitement and action. He’d fulfilled the requirements of two missions, whether it be eradicating the horde of animals from Hi no Kuni, or showing Konoha’s power to the civilians. As he entered, Haru would head straight for the Hyūga Compounds, happy to be able to take a shower and sleep in his own home.
