Quest for the Desert Scorpions [Contract][Private]

QUEST FOR THE DESERT SCORPIONS

Ancient tales and legends about a scorpion temple, situated beneath Kaze no Kuni had been passed down Kouhi's family for generations. The story states that many years ago, powerful ninjas used to summon giant scorpions into battle to fight by their side. However, during a powerful clash, these ninjas were all defeated, and the remaining scorpions retreated to their home. The scorpion's home is said to be a temple, buried beneath the desert by large amounts of sand. This temple was rumored to be built by an ancient civilization that either worshiped the creatures or feared them. Different versions of the same stories can be heard, but the tale in itself is now considered to be pure folly. However, the Benda family still believes in the existence of these scorpions. Kouhi, a member of this family had decided to set out to find this lost civilization and to acquire their power in battle.

The reason for Kouhi's quest for power was the recent encounter with his new team. His team was composed of three Suna ninjas. The members of the team were Kouhi Benda, Higan Hyuuga and Youko Zantetsuken. However, the team was shortly disbanded as one of the members was murdered by a nuke-nin. Kouhi promised to himself that he wouldn't let something like this happen ever again. He didn't care to take revenge on the specific nuke-nin that took his friend's life, he wanted to take revenge on all nuke-nins. To do this, he needed to be stronger, and achieving a summon was the first step to achieving revenge.

With these thoughts in mind, Kouhi set out in the hot and desolated desert to look for the rumored temple. He had no idea were to start, for all he could see around him was the crystal reflection of the sun on the golden grains of sand. He had traveled far from his village, lacking a map and guidance. The only thing that helped Kouhi to drive onward in his quest was the thought of his friends.

"No! I will not let them down!"

The blazing orb of fire was held high in the sky--it was midday. Waves of heat lifted themselves from the golden sand, the visible haze a testament to the sun's heat. They surrounded you like a prison, a prison that trailed your steps seemingly eternally, dissipating as you neared, only to appear further in the distance. As you walked, it would go on like this for quite a while. Only the endless sand dunes surrounded you, cresting in waves and mounds.

Little clues were left as to your destination. If the temple was indeed buried, as it was rumored to be, then wandering aimlessly wouldn't serve you well. Still, digging randomly would prove effective, either. Your choices were limited, though, and nothing rested on the horizon of your vision. Thus, every direction seemed very much the same, save for wherever you'd come from. Even that had faded from view, though, leaving you quite alone.

A zephyr--warm and light--fled across the sands, and faded from its ephemeral existence. Cacti filled the endless expanse, a rare, dull green against a golden backdrop. To the east, the sand dunes were extremely high, much higher than anywhere else, while in the north the landscape seemed to dip down. Where you headed was up to you.

THE SEARCH CONTINUES

Kouhi sunk his feet, one after the other, in the hot desert sand. He would stop now and then to sink his feet deep enough so that he could reach the cooler sand below. He did this three times while searching to cool off his feet, until he felt something moving near his toes. Kouhi jumped a large step backwards and immediately drew out a single kunai from a pocket situated on his satchel. He stared intently at the sand upon which he once stood, shifting into place. Suddenly, a dark black, scaly creature popped out of the golden sand. Kouhi couldn't restrain his joy, so he yelled the obvious at the top of his lounges.

"A scorpion!"

The boy felt a little embarrassed of his cowardliness towards the small arachnid. He placed his kunai back in his satchel and stared at the scorpion, who was minding its own business. Kouhi walked closer to analyze the creature. At first glance, it did not look like one of the temple scorpions described by the stories. The temple scorpions were large and had tribal painting, which honored their ancestors, on their back. This scorpion however was small and didn't seem particularly intelligent. Staring at the insignificant animal was frustrating to Kouhi. He was mad that the small scorpion had gotten his hopes up for nothing, but he couldn't give up now.

Kouhi kept walking in the empty desert, aimlessly searching for the scorpion's temple. Suddenly, the situation changed. He had gotten used to the desert now, and he could see the small changes in the setting. Towards the east, the sand dunes seemed to elevate and towards the north they seemed to drop. This choice of direction could turn the tides of his search for better or for worse. He finally decided to head north, following his simple and naive thought process.

It seems that in this direction the dunes are much higher. There could be something hidden underneath!

The high dunes in the distance rippled upward like hills, standing tall and windswept. Another warm wind fell across you for a moment, before it died down and the air was still. Since the massive dunes were quite a ways away, it would take you a bit of time to get there. You would have to endure the intense heat of the desert, falling upon you unrestricted and without mercy. Fortunately, as a Sunagakure shinobi, you were likely used to such heat--but the desert was unforgiving stubborn, and wouldn’t let up even if you were used to it.

After some time, you’d arrive at the base of the first large dune. It seemed normal, and aside from its size, didn’t stand out very much. A shadow fell across you as a bird soared over head, though it disappeared behind one of the large dunes quickly. If you chose to climb the first large dune you cam across, at the top you would find that it was far from the largest. In the distance, a single dune, almost like a miniature mountain, stood erect like some sort of monument.

At its base, a silhouette flashed by, just on the edge of your vision, before disappearing behind another hill of sand. It had been ephemeral--lightning fast, but undeniable--however it related to your goals was debatable, though. Still, any other clues eluded you up to this point, as the desert was a massive and painful place to search through.
