Empty.
That's how it felt to walk the streets of Konohagakure. There was no spark in the ninja of Masakuni's village. No drive for improvement. No lust for battle. They sat back on their laurels, assured of their power as they grew fat and feeble. He would have no part of it. As a wind whispered through the trees of his homeland, he turned his back on the village gates. Without a single glance over his shoulder, his feet kicked a cloud of dust up behind him as he pushed off the ground. In a single deft motion, his foot met the trunk of a nearby tree and adhered, allowing him to scale it with ease.
Once in the trees, he began to move, pushing himself to reach the most optimal speeds he could. He flitted from branch to branch, his feet rarely still for more than a second before he was on to the next branch. Soon enough, the forest was blurring away beneath him, with little variation in his path. Only the odd meadow or clearing forced him to shift. For hours, the trees flickered away beneath him, slowly thinning out as the sun overhead began to fade beneath the horizon. He stopped for a moment, regarding the dimming illumination.
With a few quick motions, he left the trees. His feet touched the earth lightly, making nary a sound. He slung his pack down from his shoulder and set about the business of making camp. He would be up before the sun tomorrow. He would need to be in order to reach past the country borders. He could already see the trees and grass giving way to the rough stone of Tsuchi no Kuni. If he pushed himself, he hoped to reach the stony nation before the next sunset. With a sigh, he laid himself down to sleep.
It was only a few short hours before he awoke. The stars and moon still dominated the sky, though perhaps the barest twinkle of light graced the horizon. He gathered up his things, breaking camp quickly. He glanced behind him. Was anyone following him? It would be days before the ninja of Konohagakure realized that he wasn't on a routine training trip. By then, he hoped, he would be long gone. He set off between the trees, heading for the low rise of mountains on the far-away horizon. There was something better within them, he hoped, just beyond his grasp.
