Kouhei strolled along the bustling streets of Iwagakure no Sato a small tune on his lips as he whistled excitedly. Kouhei was on his way to perform his very first mission as a shinobi! As far as missions went it wasn’t exactly a grand adventure, but it had a lot of promise in Kouhei’s eyes. The woman at Josephine’s had agreed to give him a simple D-Rank mission, the standard for anyone his rank. However, the mission entailed that Kouhei man a local merchants store while the owner went out for a haircut. Kouhei kept his hair rather long and didn’t do much to maintain it besides brush and cut it every now and then. He wasn’t entirely sure how long a woman might be gone for her own haircut, but it didn’t matter to him whether she was gone for ten minutes or five hours. The idea of his first mission had wiped any poor thoughts concerning it out of his mind and on top of that if customers came to the store while he was there it would mean he would get the chance to socialize with them. His first priority was of course to sell the products of the store, but it didn’t mean he couldn’t get friendly with the clientele and make a friend or two.

After a few minutes of walking in the village Kouhei came upon a busy street with people walking up and down it in small droves. Kouhei had heard of other cities that sported magnificent marketplaces that were crowded by a mass of people, but for Iwagakure no Sato this was a fairly busy day for shopping. Kouhei made his way past shop after shop on the street until finally he was standing before Madame Iva’s Jewelry Shop. The Genin’s eyes peered through the window for a moment taking in the sight of glittering jewelry as they were shown off inside only protected by glass displays. No doubt Madame Iva was only so brazen with her wares because she resided in a village of powerful shinobi who would be more than glad to hunt down any jewels stolen for her, if not for the pride of the village then for a price. Kouhei took a moment to calm himself and then pushed the door open and walked inside. As he entered the establishment a small bell tied to the door rang alerting the owner of his entrance.

The woman turned to regard Kouhei as he walked inside. At first a look of concern came over her, no doubt a result of his rather roguish appearance. Although that quickly vanished as the prospect of finally getting that haircut seemed to make any worries she was having disappear. The woman smiled at him, as only a salesman could, as she made her way over to him and shook his hand. She spoke with a delicate voice, ”So good of you to come. I had posted that request up only this morning so I was quiet surprised to already receive a response. Then again you ninja are always good about not letting a job sit for too long. You only need to man the store for a little while. It really isn’t all that busy during this time of day. Most are heading home, but on the off chance that we get some business I would rather not have to turn it away.” Kouhei nodded than as he followed the woman around and listened as she came him a crash course on jewelry and how to sell them. Seeming satisfied with what she taught him she began to make her way to the door, Kouhei following her. ”I have the item you were looking for by the way. It wasn’t cheap so I expect some compensation since this isn’t a part of the job you are performing.” The shinobi had forgotten all about the request he had made of her and quickly withdrew the amount she was due, handing it over for the clay. After receiving his clay though Madame Iva was out the door without another word. She was probably going to use his money to pay for her haircut. In the end he hadn’t even gotten a chance to say a single word. Perhaps if he did a good job she would sit and they could talk for a bit when she returned. He would like the chance to become friends with her.

With the store keeper now gone to get her haircut the mission was now officially underway. Kouhei’s mission if he chose to accept it was to man the store while the owner was off getting a haircut and hopefully get a sale. Kouhei wasn’t a hundred percent certain if the conditions of a successful mission involved making a sale, but it most definitely wouldn’t hurt the mission if he did sell something. Kouhei could only hope that if no one came in to the store while the owner was away she would renege on the payment simply because the store was dead and saw no business. The Genin wasn’t entirely sure how the village handled that sort of thing, but even for something like a D-Rank he doubted they would simply let the issue pass. He liked to the think that the Kage and those who were in charge of receiving payment were fair and good with those who sought to do business with them, but they couldn’t let something like skipping out on a payment stand. After all it may start with just a lowly D-Rank mission, but if they didn’t make the shop keeper pay than next it could be some daimyo thinking he was above paying for an S-Rank. No, they would ensure she would pay. Kouhei would just do his best to make sure she had no reason not to.

A few minutes passed with Kouhei passing the time by simply admiring the jewelry. He never took the expensive baubles out of their displays, but he pressed his face close to the displays as he took in the cut of every rock in the store. Iwagakure no Sato had one of the finest selections of jewelry in the entire world. A village hidden within massive structures of rock formations had ways of finding all sorts of mining veins. Kouhei had never left the village in order to see one of these veins, but he had overheard villagers talk about them and the vast amount of emeralds, diamonds, rubies, and other expensive baubles they contained. Eventually Kouhei grew tired of leering at all the jewelry. The shinobi had no taste for such gaudy things and he had yet to ever see a rock that could compare in aesthetic beauty to one of his creations. He doubted even the diamonds housed in this establishment could withstand the full magnificence of one of his works of art.

With nothing better to do Kouhei went to the back returning with a broom. On the off chance that a customer didn’t eventually show up and allow him to get a sale he was damn sure going to make sure the store was spotless. He wasn’t going to let the store owner think he did absolutely nothing this entire time. The Genin then began to sweep the floor moving throughout the store with some grace. As he worked diligently he whistled to himself and let his mind ponder over all the creations he would make with the new clay he purchased. There was so much he could do now that he finally had some usable clay. Kouhei couldn’t wait to put them to good use and make him some new friends. If it weren’t for his job he would have probably made some right then and there to keep him company. However, the little guys for some reason put others off and Kouhei didn’t want to scare away any potential customers with the sight of them. The Genin would bide his time for now. As if on cue the small bell chimed as the boy’s head rose and before him was a customer. The shinobi would get his chance!

Kouhei had to do everything in his power not to immediately rush the customer and make a fool of himself. Kouhei had visited shops before; he had been sold on things he hadn’t been sure he was going to buy when he originally entered. The Genin would just have to copy what he had seen done before and through their method he would succeed. This was a test on his charisma. Sometimes in the world of a shinobi such a thing was necessary. Being able to talk the secrets out of someone without them even know it was a lot easier than having to capture and torture someone and provided the chance to become friends with them. Kouhei restrained himself for a moment or two as he let the customer waltz around the display cases admiring as Kouhei had their craftsmanship. The customer was a man, older than Kouhei, but definitely young. Since most of the jewelry in the store was for women the shinobi could only guess that the man was shopping for someone else. Judging by his age he probably wasn’t shopping for his mother, but rather a romantic interest. From the way he was dressed he had some money, but definitely not wealthy. Kouhei could work with this information. He would find this man the perfect gift.

The Genin put on his best smile as he made his way to the customer. When the customer saw him approach he quickly became worried. It was then that Kouhei realized the effect his razor like teeth might be having on the man and quickly altered his expression to a closed mouth disarming smile. When he was finally close enough to speak privately with the other man he motioned for the man to go back to looking at the pieces. Then while making an effort to look at them himself he spoke, ”Welcome to Iva’s. My name is Kouhei. Is there anything I can currently help you with? Shopping for someone else can be a lot easier when you have someone to bounce ideas off of, especially so when that someone has captured your heart. You want that perfect gift to express your feelings.” Kouhei smiled inwardly to himself as his confidence rose with every word. He was surprised at how well he was doing. Most of his socializing consisted with talking to his creations and he didn’t have to sell them anything. However, he did like to go shopping himself. He liked how good it felt when the shopkeepers were so friendly, even if it was just to sell him something.

The customer was initially taken back by Kouhei’s words, but he eventually recovered. With a nod of his head the man responded, ”My name is Gregory. How did you know that I was here shopping for my girlfriend? Do I know you?” Kouhei continued with his smile trying to keep the flow going. The first step the store clerks always did with him was tried to build trust. You build trust and customers will buy anything you tell them to because they trust you. Kouhei opened the case taking out a beautiful necklace so he could show it off before the customer. He then continued, ”No sir we have never met before. I just know a guy in love when I see one. You sir have it bad. She must be one amazing woman to have a decent guy like yourself in here. Jewelry is not something you buy for any girl.” The man, Gregory, thought over his words carefully before finally nodding. Kouhei smiled at that and spoke once more, “I like you sir. You have a good look about you. I tell you what. You stick with me and I will do whatever it takes to make sure when your girlfriend sees what you got her she is going to think you went into her dreams and picked out that one piece she has been dreaming about.” Gregory looked more excited at that, more comfortable. Trust officially built. He would make this sale yet!

The conversation had been a little difficult for Kouhei to build at first, but it was quickly coming together. The Genin nodded his head confidently as the man began rambling on about his life. The man spoke about what he did for a living, what he was hoping to get from the store, and most of all about his girlfriend. He spoke about her for what felt like an eternity. Kouhei thought that by the end of their conversation he would know more about this man’s girlfriend than the shinobi knew about most of the people he had tried to make friends with in the past. It was a little interesting, but since the woman wasn’t with them to be made friends with the information didn’t appeal to him nearly as much as it probably should have. Instead the ninja did his best to absorb the information filing it away in his mind and then going through it steadily to help narrow down a possible choice for her using what they sold in the store. As the man talked he had them walk around the store. Kouhei had said it was to allow the man to see all they had to offer, but really it was just an excuse to allow the Genin to refresh his memory on what they sold to better personalize the purchase.

When the conversation was finally over both he and the man were openly smiling. It seemed that talking about the love of his life had filled the shopper with a sense of confidence and content. Perhaps his emotional state would make it easier for Kouhei to sell him something. The shinobi allowed himself to visibly think for a moment, giving the idea he was trying to think long and hard on the perfect gift despite already knowing exactly what he was going to offer the man. He then snapped his fingers as if hit by sudden inspiration and led them to a small section where the earrings were kept. With a flick of the latch Kouhei had two small earrings dangling from his fingers with rather modest, but elegant emeralds in them. He smiled as he said, ”Judging from the information you gave me I think these would be a great gift for her. The emerald is going to really work with her green eyes and since she likes to keep her hair relatively short it should be able to frame the earrings with hiding them under a mess of hair. All in all she should be able to show them off while at the same time being able to forget about them and enjoy herself. What do you say?”

A few minutes later the man was thanking Kouhei graciously as he walked out of the store bag in hand. Kouhei’s smile was wide enough that his overbearing fangs would have probably had every nearby small animal in the vicinity running for cover. Thankfully they were indoors at the moment and frankly he probably wouldn’t have cared in that moment. The next hour went by rather uneventfully and Madame Iva returned to her store without further incident. She seemed quite pleased with his salesmanship and had been apparently trying to rid herself of that piece of jewelry for some time. The clerks Kouhei had worked with in the past must have been very good since it seemed a fair bit of talent had rubbed off on the shinobi. After being promised repeatedly that the money would find its way to the Kage’s office of financial affairs Kouhei bowed his head in appreciation and took his leave. His first mission was finally complete! Maybe he would see what else there was to do, or perhaps just make some creations and have some fun.

Kouhei moved at a leisurely pace through the village seeking out his destination. The Genin was approaching his second mission with a more casual attitude than he had with his first mission. It was true that the shinobi wasn’t nearly as excited as he had been when completing his first mission, but it did not mean that he did not take his mission seriously. On the contrary Kouhei had already thought long and hard on exactly what he needed to do if he was hoping to accomplish his mission this time around. The objective wasn’t as clear cut as his former mission had been and on top of that legally it wasn’t so simple either. In his previous mission all he was charged with was watching a shop. Selling something hadn’t even been the primary goal, although it was an added perk. This time around he was aiding a rather well known drunk by providing him with more booze. Not only was this ethically questionable by the fact that he was enabling someone with a serious problem, but legally Kouhei would not be able to purchase any alcohol due to his age. If he were to simply approach the bartender directly he would be instantly told to leave the premise.

Kouhei continued to rack his brain for anything that he could possibly do that would help ensure his success as he rounded a corner into an alley. There in the shadows of a building sat Cid. The man was not homeless, although his appearance did make it easy for someone to make the assumption. However, the alcoholic lay sitting against the store already severely under the influence and probably too far gone to have the sense of balance to stand on his own. He let out a hiccup as he watched Kouhei approach and smiled at him wickedly, ”So you are the young chap they sent to fetch my drink. I was expecting someone a bit older, but whatever as long as I get some grade A alcohol in me I could care less. The place is just down the street. You can’t miss it, it’s the only bar on the street. I want you to fetch me this drink and make it quick. I don’t care what you do to get it.” With that the drunk handed Kouhei a small leaflet which held the picture of a bottle of alcohol on it. It looked like the leaflet had once been part of a larger menu, probably something the bar had to display all their drinks. A little disturbed by the appearance of the man Kouhei left without saying another word.

The young man immediately set out in the direction of the bar trying not to think too hard on just how much money Cid might waste in a night on booze. No matter what Kouhei thought he could not fixate on the reasons for doing it. Kouhei was a shinobi and there could be times in the future where he will be charged with performing a mission that he might not completely agree with. However, it was his duty to perform those missions regardless and it was the only way he would get the chance to make real friends. Besides, even if the shinobi of Iwagakure no Sato didn’t get Cid his booze the drunkard would just find someone else to do it and that person might not be able to do it without accidentally harming someone. As Kouhei continued to contemplate the ethical dilemma in his mission he sat down at a small bistro right across from the bar. The Genin ordered himself a coffee so he wouldn’t be so suspicious and set out to observe the bar. This was indeed a simple D-Rank mission, but even the easiest missions can be botched because a ninja rushed in without thinking or observing first. He wouldn’t fail because he got cocky.

Kouhei sat across the bar watching for what felt like forever. His nerves strained as he fought to keep himself from getting up and just running over and trying to take the damn bottle. He knew it was pathetic that he was already breaking down, but he couldn’t help himself. This was his first real stake out and he had not expected it to be this incredibly boring. Nothing excited was happening at all. Kouhei just continued to drink his water as he watched drunken patrons file in and out of the establishment. Even his waitress had started to get sick and tired of him simply sitting there. On more than one occasion she had not so casually mentioned if he was going to be eating or drinking anything else. He could understand her frustration though. He was using up a perfectly good table all so he can just sit there and not use any money. The Genin might have to leave her a fairly good tip as his way of saying sorry when this was over.

Thankfully, meeting at the restaurant like this was able to complete another objective of his. Kouhei managed to tear himself away from the bar long enough to watch a man approach his table and sit down. The man sitting across from him looked a little raggedy in his clothing, but no worse for wear than some folk. He grinned a toothless smile at Kouhei as he reached from under a robe and retrieved several small packs. The other man handed over the packs while leaving a free hand outstretched before him. He then spoke, ”You know this wasn’t exactly easy to get my hands on. I guess this stuff is dangerous enough that they just don’t hand it out to anybody.” Kouhei immediately retrieved the clay from the man and handed him the appropriate amount of Ryo in return. Before the man left on his own way Kouhei simply said, ”Dangerous? Ya, something like that.”

Kouhei was pleased that he could use the opportunity of a public meeting place to obtain some of the clay used for his art. The stuff was rare enough that he simply couldn’t just walk into any shop and ask for the stuff. Sometimes the blobs of clay needed to be retrieved for him from those who knew their way around underground markets. Now that he had the clay he would be ready for anything thrown his way. Kouhei turned back to the bar just in time to see something interesting. The young man watched as the bartender suddenly grabbed a patron by the collar of his shirt and toss him out of the bar. As the patron fell to the ground he shifted suddenly, reverting to the form of a young teenager. Kouhei’s eyebrows lifted in surprise and he turned to regard the bartender more carefully. He had heard the bartender was a dropout of the Academy, but it seemed he was good enough to see through a simple Henge no Jutsu if need be. It looked like getting that bottle to complete his mission was going to be a little harder than simply walking into the place and buying it.

Kouhei practically stumbled out of his chair when he realized what time it was. He had no idea he had wasted so much time just watching the bar. He had wanted to continue with his mission and get paid for his services, but he knew there were other places he needed to be. Other things he needed to be doing. He remembered that there was an important mission ahead for him and the other Iwa shinobi. He would have to complete the mission later after returning from the other engagement.
