It was a little past six in the morning, the sun was just beginning to rise over the mountains surrounding Kumogakure, and the loud ringing of an alarm clock could be heard throughout a large apartment located in the center of it all. Inside this dwelling, a youthful Shinobi could be seen sitting up in bed, stretching his arms as he had just woken up. Haru would turn his alarm off with a sigh, one part of him excited to get the day started, and another part wanting to lie back down and sleep for a few more hours.

His desire to begin his fifth c-rank mission as soon as possible would easily overpower his desire to sleep; and thus, the determined Genin would arise from his bed. It’d be a moment or two before he could do anything, his focus now on adjusting his eyes to the brightness of the morning sun, which shined through the countless amounts of windows he had spread throughout his building like only the sun could. After this temporary standstill, the Kumo-nin would make his way out onto his back balcony.

The apartment, which had been given to him by the Raikage himself, sat elevated high enough for the boy to get a good view of most of the village and its citizens. For the past week, he’d come out every morning and watched with his Byakugan as the innocent civilians left their homes for work, but also as Shinobi like himself began their missions and tasks. The scenery was beautiful, unlike anything he could have ever dreamed of seeing in Konoha, or any other hidden village he’d guessed.

Following a few more minutes of silent admiration, Haru would divert his attention to getting prepared for the long day ahead. He'd step into the shower first; while he had grown accustomed to the chilliness that enveloped the country of Kaminari no Kuni as a whole, he still loved bathing in steaming hot water to escape it every now and again. Upon exiting, he'd grab himself something small to eat, afterward standing stuck with a new dilemma – it was time for him to make up his mind on what he'd wear for the day.

Things were different here, whereas in the Hidden Leaf wearing trunks and a t-shirt was common, in this village he’d be lucky to find someone not wearing a coat. His whole wardrobe had to be modified, losing the tank tops and shorts while adding jackets and warm leggings. With all of the new, it'd be a few more moments before he could make a decision on what he'd be donning. Next to the choice, he’d also make sure not to forget his tools, though would leave his deceased brother’s katana safe under the bed.

Now stepping out, Haru would be witnessed wearing a black, slender, hooded jacket outlined with black animal fur. Under it he wore a grey long-sleeved shirt, and while not seen over his outerwear, a Kumo hitae-ate would be fastened to the boy’s upper right sleeve. He’d wear black, thick cotton leggings and a pair of black, narrow, tight-fitting loafers with long socks hidden underneath his pant legs. The only thing missing would be his gold contacts, which he didn't see the point in wearing today.

Now focused on his mission, the resolute ninja would make his way towards a vantage point, all the while pondering on what might be in store. The c-ranked mission, of which involved clearing landmines in the more unpopulated parts of town, had seemed intriguing while at the mission compound. There was, of course, the danger of being blown to pieces; however, due to his Kekkai Genkai, he felt the mission would be both simple and thrilling, almost as if it was meant for him especially.

With his innate advantage, he’d be able to rid Kumogakure no Sato of these dangerous weapons, as well as save trouble that would be extremely arduous, time consuming, and easily life threatening for any other Shinobi. He’d force it upon himself as an obligation, now even more motivated than before to complete the mission and aid the village in his own special way, a way no other Shinobi in Kumo could. The thought would force a grin on the adolescent’s face as continued on toward his destination.

He’d be headed toward a small abandoned tower located near a vacant part of town, empty due to having been closed away after the war as a result of the risk of active landmines. This would be one of several locations he’d be taking care of today; his pace would quicken at the thought of this, trying his best to hurry, as he had no clue how long it’d take to clear the mines. Adding onto this train of thought, the Kumo-nin wasn’t even sure on the tactic he’d be using to disarm/deactivate the hidden explosives.

He knew his Byakugan would do the locating, and he’d received a small pouch of safety pins upon requesting the mission, but other than that, he wasn’t sure how to go about it. It wasn’t something that he’d remembered being taught to him in the academy; and if it had been, he’d either been asleep or not paying attention during the lesson. Cursing himself now for not researching, he’d be forced to stop what he was doing and carefully formulate some kind of plan, as one mistake is all it would take before 'boom'!

As he began to ponder on it from that point of view, the Hyūga would begin to notice just how fragile life was; one false move and it was over for him. The worry and fear received from that thought would force the boy to work twice as hard in preparing himself and coming up with a strategy. After a few minutes he had a basic idea of how he wanted to do things, however would need to see one of the actual mines before he could be completely sure. Thus, he’d swiftly climb the tower upon arrival.

He would activate his Byakugan once at the top, subsequently scanning the entire area below. It wasn’t long before he’d spot them, usually in clusters of two to three, each spread a few meters apart. There weren’t too many in this particular zone; he’d guessed most had already been cleared, as the only ones left were off the main paths and instead camouflaged or hidden under the ground of back alleys and side roads. Having memorized their structure, the Genin was now ready to begin.

Hopping down from the tower, he’d now make his way toward the first set. His Byakugan would stay trained on the front landmine as he inched his way forward, beginning to crawl as he approached the five meter mark. This was it, either his plan would work and he’d deactivate the mine, or it wouldn’t and his head would be blown off in the explosion. After several seconds of creeping, he’d converge on the explosive without touching it, his eyes now searching for a small hole wherein he’d put the safety pin.

Upon finding it, he’d focus on taking deep breaths in an attempt to calm his shaking hands. Next, all in one movement, Haru would slide open a small latch and stick the pin directly into the tiny hole... Shit… that was scary.. he’d roll over onto his back after staring at the bomb for a few moments, relieved that what he’d done hadn’t killed him, and that it was possible as long as you were gentle and very quick. Taking more deep breaths, he’d wipe the sweat from his face before getting back up to proceed.

The next two, both located five meters to the left and right of the first one, would be a little harder to work with. While the front one had been above ground, he’d have to dig these two up by hand before putting the pin in to disarm them. Even more dangerous than the previous landmine, he’d make sure to go slow; taking his time as he only had one chance. Having gotten over the fear of the first one, his hands no longer shaked, he wasn’t scared but instead very wary, alert but at the same time patient.

He’d push himself back onto his knees; pale eye’s focused on the explosive to the left of him, which he’d be going after first. It sat about 6 inches underground; he’d stare at it with a concentrated expression, his mind contemplating fervently on which tactic would work best. In the next instant an idea would dart into the boy’s head, he’d subsequently perform a short string of handseals and begin to use Fūton to dig up under and around the mine, pushing the dirt away from it while applying no pressure.

This was definitely giving the boy an adrenaline rush; he could feel it in him as he advanced upon the last landmine of the cluster. He’d try to breathe deeply in an attempt to calm down, but to no avail, the youth's mind was wired. His heart would begin to pump at an unbelievably fast rate as he inched closer; having never done any work like this before, he didn’t understand why it was happening, but he felt as if at any second he’d explode. This rapid burst of energy would seemingly force the Genin forward.

And then… ‘BOOM’

Eyes widening, the young Hyūga's life would flash before him only milliseconds prior to the detonation. In a desperate attempt to save himself, he’d throw up one single handseal; whether he’d get the jutsu off or not would be the deciding factor in his fate. If his last-second Kawarimi didn’t work, the detonated explosive would rip his body to shreds, but if it had worked, he’d be safe twenty meters away and a fallen branch would take his place. He’d have his answer as a tugging sensation substituted him.

Tears would trickle down as he watched the small explosion from afar, the heat from which rushing upon him as he stood up and walked back to the mine. He’d pick the disarmed ones up and put them in a large container, next sitting down to calm himself after what had probably been the scariest moment in his life. Sitting there, he’d reassess his current situation, reflecting on what he’d done wrong. It was almost as if the adrenaline threw him on top of the landmine, it was a scary thought; he'd almost died.

"Ok.. fuck, I need to slow things down… rushing won't get me anywhere."

Taking his own advice, Haru’d carefully scan the area for the next set of mines, moving upon them this time in a much more relaxed, composed, unruffled manner. The fact that he was so scared now actually helped with his pace, as being put through such a traumatic experience wasn’t something he’d ever want to happen again, ever. With the use of his Fūton chakra and safety pins, the disarming would become, little by little, much easier; before long, the boy would have the first section completed.

He’d arrive at the second zone in only a few minutes time, immediately getting to work by activating his Kekkai Genkai and locating the new sets of mines. These were more spread out, not as clustered as the others. It’d make his job much easier, as working with two or three mines surrounding you was never a fun experience. By the last mine, he’d become an expert of sorts at his own tactic, which was simply using wind chakra to move the dirt while putting a safety pin back into its small hole.

Sprinting toward the next location, he’d arrive to find that there were, in addition to the ones in back alleys and such, mines still hidden under main roads. Though he was gaining confidence with each successful deactivation, the Hyūga would keep his pace as slow as he had in the beginning, making sure to not make any mistakes. Before long his face would be drenched in a cold sweat, owing to his focus and concentration in trying to use the chakra-imbued wind without applying direct pressure to the explosives.

Taijutsu, and more specifically the Hyūga’s Jūken fighting style, were his forte, while Ninjutsu had been a much smaller focus throughout his younger years. Thus, the amount of ability and ease at which he was utilizing his Fūton chakra was surprising Haru himself. Satisfied for the first time today, he’d begin to work even harder than before, eventually finishing the last section in under an hour. He'd lie down on the ground beside the final disarmed bomb, completely and utterly exhausted.

He’d done a great service for Kumogakure today, enabling hundreds of citizens to move back into their old neighborhoods without fear of being killed by these lethal mines. His last task would be to drop the large containers full of disarmed explosives off at an address written on the very bottom of his mission slip. It’d take an additional hour, but afterward he’d feel an immense sense of fulfillment, having completed another c-ranked mission, while at the same time aiding his village in a way only he could.

With that, he’d set off towards a ramen shop, and afterward back home for some much needed rest.
