KUSA NO KUNI - Botany Research Institute
It has been the leader in herbalist paleontological excavations and preparation since the First Great Shinobi World War, helping supply museums and collectors the finest in professionally prepared salves and poisons rumored to be capable of anything. From the sub-microscopic cyanobacteria of legend to the only complete example of the Green Relancth Behemoth, spherical precambrian stromatolites sprouting branches through the earth to triple distilled Gara Leaf to precipitate Tufa to the over-sized 'thought tree' of Yamanaka myth, the Kusa No Kuni BRI has not only uncovered some of the most important plant types and sub-types in recorded history, it has developed cutting edge mixing techniques on a scale formerly thought only remotely theoretically plausible.
Much of its staff is actively engaged in the ongoing research of prehistoric fauna and rare vegetation imported from the Land of Summons, preserved in the underground caverns of Chthon which run beneath the Land of Grass. To help accomplish this, it has an extensive reference library, as well as many researchers, scientists, doctors, and licensed botanists, as well as a grouping of bored secretaries who spend their days endlessly filing paperwork.
This of course, is only it's public face.
The institute itself was built near the beginning of Kusa No Kuni's original establishment; the massive totems depicting archaic gods and squat boorish deities were largely remnants of the underground civilization inhabiting the deep caverns of the 'village' far before shinobi ever existed. The Emma'ho were originally a savage and brutal people, until their discovery of the ability to manipulate mokuton chakra that helped preserve the jungle habitat that had begun to collapse around their fragile home. Rebuilding and re-educating themselves, the Emma'ho became leaders of philosophical thought, but an ingrained xenophobic reserve prevented them from interacting with the outside world, and sharing their knowledge. They developed macro-technology, a branch of science that developed mechanical energy through the use of mountain-sized carved stones and gears, powered by the geothermic vents that criss-crossed their city like roads of heat. In this way, they were able to build constructions of such complexity and size, that even now, a thousand years later, these relics still stand, testaments to the ingenuity of the past.
They built deeper things, hidden objects. They tunneled into the earth, beneath the lower levels of what many conceive is possible. They found secret dark places near the core.
The Botany Research Institute lies inside of the Kusakore Dome, an enclosed underground complex built to be nearly as large as the nearby hidden village. A small man-made lake is fed by a waterfall carrying precious ore throughout the facility. It extends inside and outside of the main building, and can be entered exclusively by travel through the very earth itself. The main entrance is startling close to the Village Gates fed by the nearby thermal band known as The Acheryx.
BRI - Hill Centre Lab
The Hill Centre Lab is the main source of the Institute's considerable success; a separate facility within the massive compound mostly concerned with instructing the next generation of Herbalist in a controlled enviornment, as well as defending the land from earth based threats buried too far under the surface to become an issue for the country's larger population. It contains a holding facility for things considered too dangerous for traditional containment, living poisons and grass totems that reek with chakra, and is fully staffed by experts in nearly every field.
You enter the Hill Facility via special transport. Ignoring the larger laboratories which are closed off, you see a waiting area, as well as several others like yourself, future students. Upon entering, you were handed the registration papers necessary to apply for an Herbalist License. There is a young woman at the desk in front of you who will collect your application once it is finished. She eyes the flytrap around your body rudely, but is otherwise silent.
