The mission notice I was given by my Sensei made me feel scared. Never before had Father given me an order directly, much less one so vague. I looked down at the note that was now a crumpled mess in my hand, trying to soothe myself by noticing the small details of my surroundings — the way the wind made the corners of the paper wave, how the sand rustled at my feet, the pleasurable heat, the unnatural quietness.

Aside from Sensei, I preferred to be alone during my training and work. The older kids had teams, but not me. Father told me I was special, better than them. Was he planning to send me on some spectacular mission that would take me outside the boundaries of this village? I could only hope his intentions were that pure. Sensei seemed nervous when he handed the message to me, which was strange in itself.

I breathed deeply and leaned back against the sandstone wall, tugging my hat down over my eyes to protect them from the sunlight. Was I early, or was he just late?[/style]

The deep, masculine voice come from her left, where he had seemingly appeared from thin air. Blue eyes were locked on the child, studying her posture and movements carefully — calculating. From the slight curl of his lips it was obvious that he was displeased with what he noticed, but the expression faded just as quickly as it had come.

He crossed the distance between them, footsteps not making a sound, as if the sand made his movements easier instead of more difficult. Compared to her, he was a tall man and equally built; the scar that crossed his cheek was one of many that told the story of his efforts as a shinobi. Etsuko Masaru was, undisputed, the strongest and most accomplished of his kind in Sunagakure, perhaps even beyond.

"I commend you for being early. I was expecting you to be late," he remarked casually, although the bite in his tone was obvious. "Let us cut to the chase, shall we? You are of the age that both of your brothers developed their Sharingan, and yet you .. have not. Why is that, Youka? Tell me," he commanded.[/style]

I recognized it as Father's immediately, but it wasn't so much that he startled me as that he was upset. He always spoke in rather formal tones to all of us, Mother included, but we — the children — had learned when to avoid him. Normally, I would have escaped the situation and locked myself in my room. Now, however, it was impossible. He would never accept an excuse and I could never out run him.

Instead of reacting negatively, I forced myself to stand straight and tugged my hat back into a more proper position. He chose this ugly beige dress for me to wear; the kitty hat was my only true measure of expression, unlike all the other girls my age ...

"Father," I greeted him, turning to face him with a welcoming smile, as I had been taught. I made sure that it did not waver, even when he insulted my work ethic; I knew it was not true because Sensei always praised me for how well I did, as did Shiro and Sora. His next comment was the one that truly hurt me to the core: my Sharingan, or lack thereof. It was a point of contention within my family, because if the clan found out that I hadn't gained access to our communal power, I would be thought of as nothing short of a pariah. Weakness was never tolerated.

"I have not been trying to activate it, Father. I have been working on more basic techniques with Sensei," I tried to explain, but realized my mistake. Wincing, I corrected, "I mean, Sensei has been teaching me how to better control my wind so that I can be a better asset during missions."

I realized then that nothing I could say to him would help — he had trapped me, sunk his manipulating claws in and dragged me down to the level he wanted. I only knew how to control Fuuton, not Saton or any other element like my family. I could not even so much as light a match with my chakra, much less produce fire, as was expected of an Uchiha. He knew that the Sharingan developed at different ages for everyone; he needed fuel to continue to berate me. I clenched my fists to hold back my anger and looked away from him, unwilling to see whatever expression would surely be there.

The note? I crumpled it up further and slid it into my pocket, wishing I had thrown it in the trash in the first place.[/style]

It was not her explanation that irked him, but rather that she had gone on the defensive, as if she expected him to lash out. Her brothers were much easier to deal with in regards to orders; they were obedient when necessary, but they also knew how to be independent and fight for what they wanted. That was the mark of a true leader.

"Unacceptable," he sighed.

Shiro was the one he had been grooming to take up Sunagakure's rule after he stepped down, but Youka was his second choice. That should have been a compliment, as no other woman had ever been considered for a position of power within the family. Yet the child stood there, defiant, hating him with every fiber of her being. He understood it, but it was still unacceptable.

"You must activate your Sharingan, child, as soon as possible. Without it, you cannot continue your training in the same manner."

His decision to make her Shiro's back-up was not a popular one, and it fell upon him to motivate her to prove her power to the others. She could never know that, of course. If that meant that he would be the bad guy .. so be it.

"Today you and I will fight. We will continue until your Sharingan activates and you prove to me that you can fend for yourself. This is non-negotiable. Prepare yourself."

He turned away from her and walked to the other end of the plaza, about twenty meters away.[/style]

I felt my lips part and I knew that my expression was one of dumbfounded astonishment, but I couldn't muster up the strength to compose myself, even when I knew he would not like this reaction. It was neither ladylike nor was it befitting of an Etsuko, regardless of my status in the clan and my overall strength. I still had to wear a mask of poise and grace while out and about; luckily, there did not seem to be any villagers in the immediate area to witness my behavior, an occurrence that I could chalk up to him wanting privacy for this so-called sparring match.

"W-what?" I finally stammered, blinking rapidly. I knew that my father was a very powerful man; if he wasn't, he would not have been named leader of the entire village hidden in the sand. I frequently fought practice matches with my brothers and even once my mother, but never him. Ever. It was unheard of! "I don't understand, Kazekage-sama," I whispered, using this title-honorific combination in an attempt to appeal to his more rational side — the side that enjoyed having its ego stroked and which knew this was within questionable limits of his authority as a parental figure. "I could never beat you. You know that."

Despite my protests, I was already backpedaling, moving as far away from him as this plaza would allow. I estimated that by the time I was done, we were a good ten meters apart. I reached up and grabbed the kitty-cat hat and tore it off my head, probably leaving my hair mussed up and frizzy, but who was I to care about that just now? I tossed the hat over my shoulder. Unfortunately, the thought lingered at the back of my mind as I drew a kunai from the satchel at my hip, until finally I lifted my free hand up to smooth out my cranium and the fly-away hairs.

"I don't want to fight you, Father. Please, is there not another way to activate the Sharingan? I will try anything else, anything at all .." [/style]

Does she not understand what I am risking for her at this very moment? I am giving her something that no one else would dare cross the lines of traditions to make a reality.

I will activate her sharingan so she may see the world through the true realms - the realms of power. I folded my hands upon my chest, leaving my left palm flat, while the other was tilted upwards - creating a 90 degree angle to the eye.

This was merely the beginning; my right hand began to form the seals of lore with only just this singular hand. I began my movement forward in a linear pace as I completed the hand-seals.

If she had any formidable gumption this would be the perfect chance to strike me with her kunai, but then again this wasn't about her -- this was about the eye's she needs to gain anything within our family that matters -- power.

I finished the final seal relatively quickly, thanks to the facts of the matter nothing, being about the jutsu, but the pressure of having to face me. What was it the weaker people called it? Tough Love? This is not true for what I wish to cause her is the real might of this world, and that no one is here to save you - no one.

The seals were nothing to me, but a flashy show to allow her weak eye's to keep up with me. The soles of my feet began to introduce my chakra into the sands surrounding myself, changing, and modifying it's composition for my purposes.

The sands, rose around my body in a singular fluid motion, weaving around me in an intricate pattern, before ending just above my head. The sands followed me as I continued onward, like a raging maelstrom rising into the skies to a formidable twister.

"Fear is weakness, child, do not show it to me." The sands began to form into bullets once I was now fifteen meters away from her. The long walk was merely for intimidation purposes which in my experience worked in two ways. It either caused you to think - or it caused you to shut down all processes completely.

I wonder which one happened to my child. I unfolded my right hand, and forced forward my palm giving the single for my bullets to become animated into action. They leaped out of my rising sand almost joyful to show her the way of the sharingan, this would be traumatic enough for her to finally awaken from her failures -- mostly beginning with her birth.
