|
LOYAL - Not unlike many ninja, Ryuunosuke makes an effort to disguise his own personal thoughts and emotions regarding controversial subjects, interjecting his sense of duty and loyalty above any ethical apprehension he might feel. In this he attempts to smother any rebellious facet of his being and replace it with a more cooperative standpoint.
LOGICAL – Calculative and ingenuitive, Ryuunosuke approaches every situation with caution while striving to provide himself with a solution to the problem at hand. Possessing an astute mind, it isn’t always a matter of if he can engineer an answer to his problem, but whether he can implement said stratagem or improvise well enough to sufficiently render threats obsolete.
METICULOUS – Acting with the utmost precision and accuracy as his physical and mental constraints permit him to be, Ryuunosuke is a very particular person and insists on organizing everything according to a system and being able to categorize everything in a methodical process. Conflicting with the standard ruffian approach to organization, which is to put things anywhere convenient, he persistently tries to enforce his beliefs of designating exact locations for items to be placed when stored.
OBSERVANT – Supplementary to his logical dissection of an opponent’s maneuvers is his ability to be intrinistically observant of their movements and insightful as to their intentions. Regardless of how dire the event may be, Ryuunosuke consistently struggles to improve his perceptive qualities while on and off the battlefield.
[/ul]NEGATIVE TRAITS:
DOUBTFUL – Ryuunosuke has acquired some confidence in his own skills, however he is not absolutely assured of his capabilities and is prone to doubting himself. From his own past one can readily uncover the source of his doubt. Having failed to save the chick from his childhood, failing to save his mother and failing to avenge her properly without involving his father has given him plenty of reasons to lose faith in himself.
APPREHENSIVE – As a drawback to his analytic nature, Ryuunosuke lacks the required initiative to be combat effective. Resultant of his reluctance to act until he believes he has a counter to any possible counterattack his enemy may execute. His instincts are legitimate, however in some scenarios hesitation cannot be afforded, and this is where Ryuunosuke’s shortcomings become more evident.
PESSIMISTIC – Intrinsic to his doubtful nature, Ryuunosuke is a man who would say a glass is half empty, opposed to expressing it is half full. The underlying mechanism which inhibits his ability to perform without error is his capacity to imagine every potential mishap that could occur. While it can be seen as a plus given he can begin to make preparations against any calamity, it ultimately provides him with a disadvantage in terms of perspective.
WITHDRAWN – Like many who seek to glean understanding from their surroundings, he tends to isolate himself from the common rabble to improve his chances of gaining enlightenment. Communication is essential among shinobi, and he would never go so far as to ignore a person; his path simply restrains him from seeking out others to help him solve his problems. A self-inflicted hindrance, Ryuunosuke idealizes his social insecurities as a show of penance for his past inadequacies.

[/ul][/ul]APPEARANCE: Those born of the Uchiha would typically warrant the customary blackened, hard eyes and thick charcoal hair standard among most Uchiha, however Ryuunosuke is a bit of an anomaly among Uchiha. His hair is thick and oily with a brilliant red pigmentation which is cropped to go no farther than his neck. Three sets of bangs cover his face, the two side bangs hanging down against his cheekbones while the middle bangs settle between his eyes, just above his nose. The upkeep of his hair is prioritized, treated daily to help abate the accumulation of grease which makes him uncomfortable.
Noticed as one of his most distinguishing features, his eyes complement one another by their bizarrely different colors—his left eye a rich golden color, the right a matching scarlet to his hair—which sets him apart from the rest of the crowd. While most are quick to judge the genetics of such a heritage, some criticize those who would and interject that it is a rare but benevolent omen.
Ryuunosuke has grown accustomed to harassment over his eyes and instead chooses to believe they are coincidental and mean nothing, simply a sort of birth mark. Otherwise his face would appear quite normal, with unblemished marble white skin and modestly proportioned facial features such as the size and proximity of his eyes, nose and ears. His stern expression is one of the few features which help portray his age, while his physical body seems to be childish or effeminate, though his stature is well enough above average.
Standing above many though still admittedly shorter than plenty enough of people, with a well proportioned body that has been toned through the rigors and challenges of the Kumogakure wilds, his physique resembles that of a distance runner’s. With powerful legs that are balanced in speed and stamina, as well as arms that give him a far reach, Ryuunosuke has a body fit for combat.
Without much of a fashion sense, Ryuunosuke instead wears traditional ninja attire that is mostly black in order to blend into the dark to provide a stealthy advantage over opponents. Hung across his shoulders is a sash which hangs his ninjato across his lower back, prepared for withdrawal should the need arise. His innermost layer of clothing is netted attire which enables him to keep cooler in more arid climates. Over this he wears a black robe which is tied against his waist firmly, the ends of his sleeves and leggings left loose for unrestricted movement.
He adorns the lower half of his face in a black mask meant to cover his lips in the event someone skilled enough tries to read his lips, his hair obscured inside a black garment which wraps around his skull, acting like a hood as well as a scarf. Along his forearms he wears sleeved, fingerless gloves which are made of cloth to help hide his alabaster skin tone. Hugging snugly against his attire is layered armor which is strung together to cover his upper arms, waist and thighs. This style of armor is very light and largely decorative, though he still chooses to wear it. The bright white color of this armor would seem to conflict with his attempts at subtlety, but actually serves to break up the appearance of his silhouette from a distance, although at closer distances it would inhibit Ryuunosuke’s ability to remain hidden.

PROLOGUE
Amidst every conflict there is a collection of those innocent to any crime, guilty of no sin, and yet their affiliation with a group at fault can lead them to persecution. Children are themselves harmless, but are the fundamental resource through which armies are raised, and that is why they are often targeted. It isn’t that children are a direct threat, but that indirectly they are the most dangerous wild cards in times of peace and war. A generation taught to hate harbors cruelty and vengeance, and so it is often decided in the world of shinobi that when an encroaching threat approaches you, it must be dealt with swiftly and without discretion: Sometimes, children must die.
This was the inevitable fate that several in a small branch family of the Uchiha suffered from as their youth were plagued by nightly assailants who struck silently in the gloom, smiting any child born of the Uchiha. The prowess of the clan was enough that others dared not to affront them in open combat, but instead usurped their position by removing any child they conceived. Though the plan was formidable, it would take years before they could effectively employ this plan, it was the only chance of success. So for years the coming of twilight and dusk acted as a beacon for death, there were of course measures taken to prevent the end of the family line. Children, toddlers and infants were sent away from the village in an attempt to elude the assassins entirely. Though many were able to safely carry the children to new homes, some were halted along their path, the passengers slaughtered ruthlessly.
The future seemed bleak for the branch family, and although the prestige and nobility they had secured for themselves would be lost to the ravages of time, they could feel confident that their legacy would continue forward in the hands of those safely carried out from the distemper that had gripped their land and purged it of nearly everything they held dearly. Though they would never be able to hold their children again, they could rest easy knowing they had given them the chance at life, which is where the story of Ryuunosuke begins, and his ties to the Uchiha are lost.
CHAPTER TWO – Born from the Ash
As an infant Ryuunosuke was born on a borderline between the Countries of Fire and Rice, born with the blood of an Uchiha. Yet the omnipresent danger of death forced his parents to make the difficult choice of sending him to a family far away in the Country of Lightning, to the Village Hidden in the Clouds. Here there was an age old family known as the Kaenboshi Clan, and although they had no special bloodline inheritance, they were nonetheless a respectful and honorbound clan that had formed a truce with the Uchiha in a treaty written in the blood of their forefathers.
Obliged to offer any aid they could, they accepted to raise the child born of Uchiha blood as one of their own. While they felt honored to be able to repay their debts, there was some apprehension in the notion. By taking in members of the Uchiha clan they risked raising suspicion in their neighbors and other villages, not to mention the other nations. Because of this the children were forced to adopt foster names that would obscure their identity, and most children were forced to live in different locations to protect them.
Ryuunosuke was taken in by Yuuta and Kiyomo Kaenboshi, who were married for some many years before they had adopted Ryuunosuke. They once had a child of their own, but he took ill to pneumonia and died not a year into his life, which was a shadow on their family legacy. By taking in Ryuunosuke they had hoped to raise him as their own child, perhaps selfishly abusing the Uchiha family of their circumstances. Nevertheless, they treated Ryuunosuke fairly, though they spoiled him at first.
Kumogakure was a peculiar place to Ryuunosuke as a kid, dazzled by the numerous mountains surrounding the region. It was a dangerous place to play around as a child, but the village saw it as more of a trial for the children. Cliffs and ledges provided the ultimate testing grounds for up and coming shinobi children to adapt the strength and speed necessary for life as a ninja. It is believed the rugged terrain hardens the body, mind and spirit. To the children it is simply one of the most awe-inspiring playgrounds they have ever been so blessed to play upon. The wild and feral inhabitants of the mountains however saw in the children nothing more than a nuisance or a feast fit for kings. What they actually found in them were helpful companions or more fight than they’d ever bargained for.
Ryuunosuke was now old enough to begin learning a profession, and although he had been interested in several useful skills such as blacksmithing and writing, he would ultimately turn to the path of the ninja in pursuits of a cause more righteous than any other in his mind’s eye, and that was justice.
CHAPTER THREE – Spark of Ambition
The most impacting tale of his childhood was around the time of spring when a young bird had been blown out of its nest by a breeze in the mountains. Although it wasn’t injured, the creature was terrified and hadn’t moved from its hiding place in the side of the mountain, a crevice just big enough for it to hobble on inside. It called out for its parents, who couldn’t hear it from where they flew, miles away on a hunt for food. One miscreant creature had managed to hear its pleas for aid, and so came along a feral cat with a hunger for fresh poultry.
Ryuunosuke was also able to hear the chirps and squawks that permeated the crisp mountain air, and in them he found a sense of urgency and obligation, that he should do his utmost to come and save this poor creature. Although he hadn’t the faintest idea of how to find the creature, he began to wander around in search of it. The cat was much more experienced in locating prey however, and was thusly able to pinpoint the location of the fallen chick before Ryuunosuke. It was disappointed to find the newborn hidden away in the face of the mountain, though it stubbornly reached into the crevice and pawed at the chick, managing to injure it but failing in pulling its body out of the hole.
When Ryuunosuke finally came to the scene, he saw a cat prying into the nook impatiently, trying to claim its prize before it could be accosted of its meal. His approach scared off the creature, though it teetered among the hedges nearby, hoping to scavenge the meal after Ryuunosuke left. With some effort he managed to himself reach into the crevice and secure a grip on the chick, but what he felt was a cold and thick fluid smothering the feathery coat of the bird, dead from the injuries it sustained. Frustrated and cursing himself for not getting there sooner, he abruptly became obsessed with the next best thing he could do for the bird if not save it, and that was avenge it.
Using the bird as a lure, Ryuunosuke entrapped the cat and dealt with it slowly and with conviction. Determined to make it suffer as the bird had he imprisoned it and stuck in sharp objects at it, lacerating its hide. Before he could finally kill the creature though, his foster father Yuuta discovered him torturing the cat and scolded him before putting the cat to death after realizing how much it would suffer to live. He did not punish Ryuunosuke for the act, but he was displeased with the whole ordeal and made this plain to Ryuunosuke.
Yet Ryuunosuke never forgot the frightful shrieks of the fledgling as its life briskly came to a close.
CHAPTER FOUR – Tempered in Strife
Reaching ever closer to maturity, Ryuunosuke was a problem child if there ever was one. Akin to most of his classmates, he fell so low as to disregard the legitimacy of his proctors and went so far as to declare every tutor at their school to be worse of a ninja than himself, and that they should put him in charge instead. He was disciplined for his transgressions though, and abruptly as his tantrums began they subsided, replaced with his fascination with the stories some of the proctors shared. They helped him illustrate the life of a shinobi and tantalized his mind with aspirations of fame and glamour. More than this however, it enlightened him as to the suffering of shinobi and all who partake in war.
Aiko Fujiwa, a teacher of reverence, was among a few of the remaining veterans of a great ninja war. Although his role in the battle was small, he suffered immensely for it. He was forced to turn on neighbor clans who had changed allegiance to a villainous faction outside of the Land of Lightning, a deed which cost him his livelihood when his own wife turned her back to him. But it wasn’t only the emotional trauma that he endured, but physical torture as well. His left arm hangs in a cast against his chest, forever rendered useless by a crude torture device that shattered his elbow into pieces. Running down his back are rows of writing which were etched into him ever so slowly, which can be inferred by the quality of the writing. It was written to brand Aiko eternally for his misdeeds, and to this day he has refused to have it removed, despite being offered by medical jutsu practitioners on several occasions to have the scars examined.
Those who claim victory are idols in Ryuunosuke’s admiring eyes, precious to him for their acts of valor in the face of oblivion. Seeking to repay his debts to his ancestors, his ambition to succeed as a ninja rises to an all-time high. Although his skills were rubbish upon first entering the academy, he soon became an amiable example of what an academy graduate should amount to. And with this, he took his first steps to becoming a ninja.
CHAPTER FIVE – Quenched in Vengeance
Approximately a year into his initiation in the ninja academy, Ryuunosuke suffered from his first loss. Late one evening, the village had been infiltrated by a small band of nuke-nin, or missing ninja. They were vagabonds mostly, but were prone to procuring sums of money through illicit means. They had been roaming the mountains for days in search of the village and were poorly mannered upon entering the grounds, which provoked initial discomfort among the denizens of Kumogakure’s rural areas. Despite being warned by several onlookers not to start any trouble, the group of thugs resorted to thievery in broad sight. The victim was Ryuunosuke’s foster mother, Kiyomo. Although she resisted at first, they were more than enough to subdue her without a struggle. But as is with most cases, Kiyomo had become aware of the identity of the nuke-nin, and because of this, her death was obligatory if they were to maintain their freedom.
Ryuunosuke wasn’t the first to arrive on scene, but he was one of the few so dramatically effected by his foster mother’s death. When he chanced upon the crowd of people whom he couldn’t see over and heard nothing but hushed conversation, he squeezed his figure through the crowd to get a peek at what they had encircled. The view shocked him—Kiyomo lay on the ground, bruised and oozing red onto the ground around her. Despite the onlookers having done their best to make the body appear less terrifying, the surreal fact that his mother had been savagely murdered offended him more than the incident of his childhood involving the cat and the bird. Without apprehension he fled the scene in a storm of sobs and panting as he hurriedly made his way home to alert his father to the news.
At the funeral procession there was a crowd of onlookers standing farther back from Ryuunosuke and his father, there to show their final respects but hoping not to trouble the mourning family. When the ceremonies were over and her body laid to rest, many of the townsfolk began to offer their assistance to Yuuta, offering their condolences all the while. After thanking them all for their support, Yuuta and Ryuunosuke returned home. Yuuta began to drink heavily after this, although he was a gentle drunk and simply became sorrowful as opposed to entering a drunken rage.
Contrary to his father’s method of managing the stress of Kiyomo’s death, Ryuunosuke took it upon himself to swear a blood oath of vengeance. This was the only thing he felt he could do in his mother’s memory, though he was harsh on himself. Once again he had let something precious to him die, helpless and alone in the world. He felt responsible for her death, and so he shouldered the majority of the burden alone.
CHAPTER SIX – Dulled by Arrogance
With his mother’s death now behind him, and his eyes set to the horizon, his lessons soon became the most important aspect of his life. Absorbing every tidbit of information he could, Ryuunosuke began to transform into an exemplary ninja, while others saw him for what he truly was: Disturbed. Life dreams were destroyed on the day of Kiyomo’s premature death, and Ryuunosuke was eager to begin the onslaught of vengeance that would end only when the last defiler of his mother’s innocence was forced to face his guilt and suffer debilitating agony.
His skills with the shuriken and kunai had become commendable in his most recent demonstrations at the academy, and soon it would be time to graduate, but first Ryuunosuke would face his first enemies in the ninja world. Just as they had wandered into the village a year ago, so too did they return again. The only exception was one who had remained hidden somewhere in the mountains, poisoned and looming in the face of death. The nuke-nin tried to enter the village and seek medical assistance, but they were fended off by a group of villagers who recognized them. Upon hearing of their return, Ryuunosuke rushed to where they were last spotted and inspected them for a few moments before engineering a plan.
Carrying a satchel which held within it an assortment of first aid ointments, he accompanied the rogue ninja as they trekked back to their fallen comrade. Along the way he began to imagine the scene of carnage he would walk away from after he finished with them. His plan seemed to be coming along perfectly, although Ryuunosuke was too confident in his progress. Despite his accomplishments in recent months, he still had no concept of ninja combat and could only utilize the most base of jutsu. It would be a miracle if he emerged from this plot unscathed.
Upon reaching their destination, Ryuunosuke spotted the lying body of an intoxicated ninja and immediately reached for his kunai and shuriken. There were two men behind him, one watching him expectantly while the other surveyed the horizon, acting as lookout for their assembly. Like a mongoose his body twisted around as he plunged the kunai deep into the neck of the man who’d been watching him closely, his eyes expressing shock as his throat gurgled in his own crimson cruor. The comrade who had been surveying their perimeter was alerted by the noise and quickly assessed the situation, grappling with Ryuunosuke as he subdued the child, preparing to butcher him on the spot, cursing him in several ways all the while.
Just as Ryuunosuke was beginning to lose his faith in himself, the man he was struggling with suddenly grunted in discomfort as several shuriken embedded themselves into his back, drawing blood from the damage inflicted and giving Ryuunosuke a brief gap to escape from his enemy’s clutches; but who was the mystery savior? Who had tracked them back to this location, out in the barren wastes surrounding Kumogakure?
It was Yuuta, having heard from the villagers just moments after Ryuunosuke did, only a few steps behind them as they departed for their fallen comrade. He looked jovial to see Ryuunosuke intact, though he was less than satisfied with his actions and was still quite conscious of the task at hand. The nuke-nin had turned to face them now and withdrew a brutal-looking weapon from his back made of heavy clumps of metal. Yuuta withdrew his own weapon of choice from its sheath—a blade of fine craftsmanship—and pointed it at the man indignantly.
Clashing weapons several times, it was clear that Yuuta was at a disadvantage against the heavier weapon. His blade couldn’t efficiently block an attack from it, and the man was too skilled with his own weapon to allow for any more than the briefest of gaps. Yuuta had been an excellent practitioner of the blade in his youth, but his old age had withered some of his fighting spirit. He was going to lose if Ryuunosuke didn’t help him soon.
But Ryuunosuke was frozen, doubting whether or not he could do anything to bring down this ninja. He began to ponder whether or not him and his father would make it out of this situation alive, or if they’d both be left to rot in the mountains for the feral animals of the region to scavenge their cadavers. And suddenly his perception shifted when he heard the sound of crunching and his father knelt to the ground, his chest mashed by the heavy weapon.
With a sudden tenacity and motivation, Ryuunosuke flung himself at the ninja from behind as he attempted to make the killing blow to his father, and he pressed his kunai into the man’s neck before whispering something into his ear. He could feel the sweat on his neck and the cold of his skin for a moment—signs of fear—before he thrust his kunai into the man’s throat and silenced him forever. Looking to his father, he took up his kunai once more and walked to the third man, who by now had managed to crawl away several meters before stopping once more, the poison overtaking him quickly now as his death came to him, Ryuunosuke helping it along.
Returning to his satchel of medicines, he tended to his father shortly, remedying what little he could before shouldering part of his weight and trudging along slowly back to the village to seek out a doctor.
CHAPTER SEVEN – Sundered by Guilt
It was nearing the time of his graduation now. His life had taken a few turns for the worse, but it seemed that conditions were beginning to improve. Although he began to feel guilty for allowing his father to become injured, he nonetheless considered himself an accomplished ninja by now. Fellow students at the academy had heard of his dance with death and admired him for it, while others snidely remarked that he was simply an opportunist who’d taken advantage of the situation. This influenced Ryuunosuke the most, as he began to examine whether he would’ve claimed victory in his fight if his father hadn’t acted as scapegoat in the whole ordeal.
In this he found a sense of debt to his father, who insisted that he didn’t owe him anything more than his love. Despite this, Ryuunosuke felt compelled to find ways to make his father proud. This led to extravagant demonstrations of strength, speed and endurance for his father to see. And while it did make Yuuta proud to know Ryuunosuke was working so hard, he never felt as if he’d satisfied his father. And so he carried on in a pseudo-depressed state, uncertain if he would ever be able to appease his father after failing him.
It was in response to this predicament that Ryuunosuke ventured off into the deep mountains alone one day, not returning until roughly a week later in order to pay penance. He had been reduced to eating bile and other demeaning acts of an atrocious nature simply to survive, and through this he hoped he would help himself feel at peace. When he returned home to his village, he heard news of his father depicting him as stripped of his spirit. Tearing through the crowd, Ryuunosuke nearly broke down his own front door to find his father mourning over a picture of Ryuunosuke, having thought him dead in the wilds. The gleam in his eye reassured Ryuunosuke of his peace and helped convince him that he hadn’t failed his father.
CHAPTER EIGHT – Ashes to Ashes
Just as legends fall, so too must they rise. Although the adventures of Ryuunosuke have only just begun, his beginnings echo the indicators of a great and successful shinobi. With his time at the academy drawing to a close, he must finally begin his ascension into the ranks of Kumogakure’s ninja and place his stake in the world.[/ul]
