The rocky mountain ranges that surround the village provide a natural stronghold that it is very proud of. The village's infrastructure is built from much of the surrounding rock and stone, shaped into tower-like structures that are interconnected by a network of bridges. Surprisingly, these massive towers are dwarfed by the enclosing mountainside because they are dug into a pit of counter-structures, with Iwagakure itself sinking into a massive canyon in bizarre geometries, an underground bastion against the rest of the world.
The village gates leading into Iwagakure are located far, far away from the old entry, increasing the village's stealth and security, and making it harder for any agents acting against Iwa to succeed. It is often described by outsiders as a cesspit or hole in the ground, a collection of ruins, and conflicting rumors related to its state of collapse have trickled out even to the new world, though it remains steadfast and strong, defying the harshness of Tsuchi No Kuni.
Iwagakure's close proximity with Suna has led to numerous conflicts over the years, enough so that enmity between its shinobi has become deep-seated. Nevertheless, it is now a city-state entrenched in as much legend as there is stone, rebuilt by the Second Tsuchikage's own hands after the Great Samurai Wars, its most notable features are an overlapping series of secret passageways and mineral caverns that reportedly even its citizens occasionally become lost in.
The standard attire for Iwa shinobi consists of red outfit — which can either have one, or both sleeves — a lapel which is usually found on the side without a sleeve and a brown flak jacket — which also may, or may not have a pouch attached to it. They also tend to wear mesh armour around their ankles. Many Iwagakure ninja use Earth Release techniques. Iwagakure is well-known for the rock-hard attitude of its shinobi; as soon as the Tsuchikage gives an order, the Iwa-nin follow it without hesitation, even if it means death.
