Finally, though it takes a simple action to take them on or off, it takes a second delay before the chakra can seal the plugs across the ear in order to block out sound. Description: Though appearing insignificant at first, these specially modified ear plugs allow the user to block out more than just regular sound. Though it cannot fully stop chakra induced sounds, it does an excellent job of keeping most of them out!

Special: Rank of mask determines the amount of time a user can spend underwater before needing to resurface and recharge the device. It takes a whole turn/post of being outside of the water in order for the apparatus to recharge. Additionally, mask is designed to keep out aerial objects that may harm the user, such as generic poisons and micro-fragments, equal to one rank lower than the rank of the mask. Each mask takes up one (1) accessory slot.

Description: With this accessory, the ninja is able to breath underwear for short periods of time. The apparatus appears to be a very small mask, and covers only the nose and mouth of the user. Although, it is quite hard and sturdy, and usually comes in a deep black color.

This stance is the basis for all Nekoshin techniques, as the flow of chakra extends and exaggerates the shinobi's feline traits. Their canine teeth elongate further, their nails grow into claws that can be retracted, and the chakra forms ears and a tail that solidify into useful appendages with fur the color of the user's hair. Due to the structural and metaphysical changes, so long as this technique is active, the user can perform high-speed movement.

Note: While in this stance only Nekoshin techniques may be used. Gains +1 in Speed stat. So long as this technique is active, the Nekoshin is capable of seeing in the dark just as well as in the light.

Fukugen Ryoku no Jutsu (Righting Reflex Technique)

Cats have an interesting innate ability known as the righting reflex, which allows them to orient themselves while falling and always land on their feet. Nekoshin have managed to copy this ability with the use of chakra, giving rise to Fukugen Ryoku no Jutsu. Instead of simply being able to always be right side-up, Nekoshin can orient in any direction, giving them the ability to twist in midair effortlessly.

Note: Requires the Nekoshin to be in Shisei Kyuushuu (Assault Stance) to use.

Shokuhin Bunshin no Jutsu is a Nekoshin technique that utilizes a cat food pebbles to create a clone. Channeling chakra into the pebbles makes them grow in size and form the shape of the ninneko; since this means it has physical substance, it is capable of interacting with its environment. This allows the clone to carry out limited attacks on its target. The Shokuhin Bunshin smells faintly like cat food, and if it is injured, it will revert back to its true form.

Note: Because the ninneko uses this technique, the chakra is drawn from their pool. This clone has a 1x High chakra pool of its own, and it is limited to using Nekoshin techniques and universal techniques that the ninneko is capable of performing. Requires the use of 10 pet food pebbles per clone.

Suterusu no Jutsu (Stealth Technique)

Ninneko are silent, deadly hunters, and over time they have passed on their knowledge and techniques to their human companions. When the Nekoshin is in the Assault Stance, they can supply their limbs with a small amount of chakra to replicate the stealthiness of a cat. They can walk silently, climb silently, jump silently, and even land silently, making them the perfect assassins.

Note: Requires the Nekoshin to be in Shisei Kyuushuu (Assault Stance) to use. Although this technique makes them abnormally silent in movement, certain situations will still produce noise, such as stepping on a branch.

Tsume Yueki no Jutsu (Claw Infusion Technique)

After performing a short series of handseals, the Nikoshin or ninneko focuses their chakra into their hands. By quickly retracting their claws, they are able to infuse the nails with their chakra in complex ways, such that when the claws are unsheathed again they have a new purpose. This allows them to increase their utility or fighting prowess in times of need.
Nobori Tsume: The chakra infused in these claws allows adherence to nearly any surface without extreme effort, except for metal. In that case, the claws must be in-bed into the surface to get a good grip, which takes a bit of additional time.

Yamai Tsume: The chakra infused in these claws is capable of causing negative side effects in those who are wounded by them. In particular, a scratch will cause nausea and disorientation. It takes one turn for the effects to be felt, and they last for one turn. While the effect can be continually applied after the duration ends, it cannot be stacked.

Ketsueki Tsume: The chakra infused in these claws is perhaps the most deadly of all. Wounds caused by the claws bleed freely due to their serrated edges, and thus the wounds are also slow to heal unless treated.
Note: This technique lasts a total of two turns, or until it is used again to replace the claws. Requires the Nekoshin to be in Shisei Kyuushuu (Assault Stance) to use. The ninneko can use this technique at any time, but the chakra is taken from their pool.

A ninneko is never without a trick up its sleeve and having studied the tactics of their companions Nekoshin have learned to be just as sneaky. When the Nekoshin swipes at an opponent, they can quickly surge a small amount of chakra into their claws, producing corporeal blades of energy that follow the same path as the attack. These blades are capable of dealing massive damage to those unaware and unprotected, ripping through cloth and flesh alike.

Note: Requires the Nekoshin to be in Shisei Kyuushuu (Assault Stance) to use. The ninneko can use this technique at any time, but the chakra is taken from their pool. This claw attack is effectively an extension of their actual claws, and will take on the effects of Tsume Yueki no Jutsu (Claw Infusion Technique). The blades are approximately the width of the claw that produces them, and can travel for 5 meters before dissipating.

Hakke Kuunami (Eight Trigrams Vacuum Wave)

Integrating the principles of the traditional vacuum palm technique, the Hyūga is capable of using the same concussive blast of chakra in a slightly different manner. Rather than shooting chakra from the tenketsu lining their palm, the practitioner instead shoots this concussive blast from the tenketsu lining their outer arm. This often takes the form of a slashing motion, and can even be used with a sword in hand. Due to the different method of propulsion, this chakra takes the form of a concentrated, concussive wave, stretching 2 meters in length, 6 inches in width, and 6 inches in height. The wave possesses enough force to throw a shinobi up to five meters into the distance, while heavily bruising the area connected with.

I was curious as to why she desired such information. Kirigakure had never played a significant role in world affairs; it was beyond the sea, adrift from the mainland and its intermingling, cosmopolitan population. We were separate, simply, and the oceanic environment of Mizu no Kuni didn’t necessarily offer accommodation to the wandering and errant. I wondered about her motives; they were impossible to discern by mere observation, with her deadpan gaze and still figure. She was a question mark that both welcomed and unwelcomed at the same time. There would be no getting to the bottom of it.

Nonetheless, I had nothing to lose, anymore; whether such information was known or not known was of no personal consequence, I thought, as the status of our village was no longer ours. The very self-hood of Kirigakure had been stolen and replaced, and now what the village was and to whom it belonged were both detached inquiries. It was merely an extension of Konohagakure, now, and technically not much else could be said. Although my allegiance had always been first to myself alone, and only then to the village, I couldn’t help but feel an even greater distance and indifference to it now. Many were the opposite, accepting our new leadership with open, sycophantic arms, but I couldn’t. It wasn’t in me to live beneath another; existence as a puppet wasn’t existence at all, I thought. Appearances had to be maintained, smiles displayed, subordination upheld, but that was all that they would be for me—convincing appearances. I only played along. In truth, I was a shinobi of a Kirigakure that only now existed in shadows—in idealistic thoughts and wild dreams. Our current condition meant nothing, to me, and I felt only an impassive coldness toward the Fire. And one day, and with the help of that book, the Fire would be forever quelled and eternally extinguished. Thus, it was with an honest, guiltless, and eager disposition that I agreed.

“Fair enough,” I replied.

“I am uncertain as to why such information matters to you, but your wish will be fulfilled.”

I turned her final words over in my head, then. A.. great shadow?

“And there is no need to fear,” I would remark, matter-of-factly, “you, of course, know by now that turmoil is the rule of the world. Shadows cover and encompass, and the sun claims none. That’s just the rule of things. I would become the Shadow itself, I think. Otherwise…”

I trailed, matching eyes with Mirumiya for a moment before drifting back toward her.

The memories surfaced from my pre-conscious at her signal, still just as vivid as being there. I experienced it all. I felt the misty air sprinting past me, thinning as I flew toward the Sound; garb and hair flowed and billowed in the mist’s direction, but my will was forward and resolute. A monstrous, calamitous moaning, and the village wall began collapsing in on itself, falling section by section like earthen dominoes. One could see it happen in the far background; the horizon fell. There was fire, as well; it poured through the buckling structure, sprouting here and there, scorching the air and rending into ash whatever it enveloped. One could feel a sudden, ubiquitous fear blanket the atmosphere, holding bodies still and head’s down. A hellish sound began to line every corner, flailing from above and below, as the villagers cried in unison. A harmony of disemboweled screeching, of death and doom, played eagerly throughout, sparing none and only amplifying as time crept on. The relaxing aroma of the still sea was destructed by the stench of blood and ash and rising dust; the horror was tangible, and you could taste it in the air. I remembered my initial puzzlement, as my soles padded against brick and stone, and the slow understanding that overwhelmed me as I drew nearer to the scene. Bodies piled against one another, atop and beneath mounds of the crumbled edifice that had once stood proud, all overseen from above by a sickly, disjointed smile.

The images of defeat and disaster wouldn’t affect my solemnity as I spoke calmly once more.

“It started a month ago, approximately. There were reports of the Mizukage’s death, initially, but none of us believed them. She was just away, we thought. And then they came, Konoha, and they forced us to comprehend what had transpired. We didn’t have the means to combat them; they overcame us, and we were left to accede or be made to resemble our Kage.”

I paused, retracing images of that filthy, repulsive woman in my mind.

“But we weren’t bereft. I would have done it myself, if I had the means. That religion… it destroyed Kirigakure long before the invasion. It created the conditions for such an invasion, truthfully—welcomed it. And so we punished them for their ineptitude, finally, and for what they had wrought upon our village. It was their fault. All their fault. And they paid, ultimately.”

I stopped again, considering now what had occurred since the Culling.

“There is a question that abounds, now. A new identity is.. is tacitly sought, by the populace. I will be their prophet, and mark a Returning. The Bloody Mist will be real, once more, and it will be a reformed Mist, more cerebral, more lethal. We won’t succumb and fail, as our antecedents have.”

“That is the story of the Mist, today. Tomorrow is a hopeful question, I believe.”

I collected myself. It was rare that I spoke so much; I watched her closely as the seconds passed.

“Satisfied?”

Smoke tossed itself up as more rolled in waves underneath, moving around the form that escaped from his shadow. The same presence as before; its blood-curdling chakra burned recollections in my mind of the carnage it had incited, the flames that it had rent ascending into the sky like disfigured hands, outstretched and waving goodbye. I felt the chill as before the church, viewing the Stygian figure and its sly commanding. It tore through the cloudy space with an icy abandon, something inexpressible across its mouth. Its vessel was with it, a blur through blurred air, and anticipation filled me as I spectated the hellish duo. If only, if only its prey could see them coming.

Only a single blinking and they were on him. The vicinity became a fireworks display of pure, disorienting force; chakra poured from the corporeal figure in crushing waves; above, an explosion dug its way deep into the fabric of the muffled air, pulling it apart, and then the roof in a violent frenzy and freeing the smoke to the sky. The remnants of a noise that had to have been evoked from another realm filled my ears, echoing an amalgamation of clawing-chalk and screeching, and deeper, more foreboding drones. What was once a fearful, sickly shudder of a form became nothing, below. A heart that had beat ferociously came to a sudden stop; tense muscles relaxed, then opened, covering themselves in warm blood, and focused eyes finally let go, like dead fish floating up. It was done as swift as it happened. The malefic being gave away its form, then, receding into the form that was just as disastrous. Vehement eyes remained still on the dark figure, lucent with a fiery reverence. My stance was beyond the range of everything that had impacted, yet its force continued to rush along my figure, reverberating past me and through me. I shivered involuntarily, reacting to the dizzying cataclysm that one alone had wrought. The flooring tilted beneath me, swaying away, incapable of beholding such miserable beauty. That was what it was. Just that.

I stepped lightly across what remained of the surface, maneuvering toward the culprit himself. The walls creaked, split, and shook. Sections were already beginning to cave in below. It would fold in on itself like a house of cards before long, like cards ripped into a thousand pieces. As quit as the bodies piling its floor; as dead as the head just torn from its place. His voice cut through the wavering smoke as I approached.

“All gone,” I laughed. I was a deathly smile, just visible through the moving grey, as I held out my sleeve. Another.

Her tranquil expression, Delphic in its indecipherability, played quietly along my vision. Her presence resembled that of the setting in more ways than one. Beyond the chilling air, and her calmness, she was as well alike the tomes lining her either side in her mystery; like an unopened book, familiar in its concrete form, and yet possessing inside the unknown itself, the enigmatic and the uncertain. She was still and silent, like pages frozen away, and laconic, yet without diffidence. And she was different from the library, as well. Lethal, fatal, fatalistic. Lithe in a way that was lost on hefty books and cyclopean bookshelves. She could be an owl or a cobra, depending, or even something yet undiscovered.

If I rambled about her appearance, it was only in proportion to the effect its sheer singularity was having on me. I wasn’t shallow; I wasn’t capable of attraction; seduction was lost on me—it was none of those silly things. It was different, it was more. It was a feeling, an atmosphere, which I felt; something that was rarely felt, and, only felt. When occasioned by what was indefinable and ineffable such feelings made themselves real, devouring, and more mystical than real. Bones shuddered, teeth clicked, at the feeling. Before the presence of one that was more, one became less than one. It was a mixture of admiration and asphyxiation.

Mirumiya purred as her cool fingers pressed white fur against his body. He ambled slightly closer, moving along a moving hand. A new friend. For the creature, at least. I was busy considering her remark. It was a shame, that most were unaware of what was a sanctuary for those who were aware. Maybe it was more than a shame. A crime, committed by power against humanity itself, which hid from its populace pleasures that didn’t directly serve it. Empire was analogous to the Id, it often seemed; blind to future returns, concerned only with satisfaction in the now. Yet, I wagered, the rewards that could be provided by such higher, less primitive pursuits stretched far beyond. They weren’t immediate, but their distance was beyond accounted for, and their supercilious manner more than called for; yet, who knew but those who already knew? How could one make the uncaring begin to care? Could an idiot be made an intellectual? This was the dilemma that plagued the knowing, today—how to actuate renaissance. It was a question for another time, though, as a new question would appear. Her, again. A gentle tone, intimating a curiosity that belied her otherwise perfunctory mien. It resonated toward me, drifting, swimming through the air, and then dispersing, leaving our surroundings to echo in my mind.

What did I want with that book? Why, I wanted everything. Everything it had to offer and more, for more reasons than any single world could afford to offer. And I could have asked her the same question. I wanted to, now. She was such a curiosity. Yet, I supposed the question was more pertinent and deserving when posed at me—given my earlier vehemence in pursuit of it, my age, or my appearance, even. It wasn’t far-fetched to consider her knowledgeable of my eyes—what they signified, to whom they belonged. Alas, no answers were to be found there. I was estranged from those ones. In an infinite number of ways—not merely by distance. From what I’d read, the Hyūga of Konoha were a people of tradition and pride; orderly, controlled, confined. I was a white, omni-present flame, however; uncontrollable, unconfined. An icicle through the heart and blood dripping from closed fangs. I was the dark of night, and the light of a distant star, and the steel beneath it all, and calmness beneath that. I did not answer to anyone. I wouldn’t bite the hand that attempted to scold me, I would cut it off. I had no family, no friends. I was a lone blade; razor sharp, shooting silent and disordered from a thousand schizophrenic directions. All encased in a still and empty form, shot through with void in endless multiplicities. I didn’t know them, and they didn’t know me.

So, if she was wondering about that, it wasn’t a thing to wonder about. Certainly nothing to worry about.

My eyes lifted from her waiting form, moving along the rows of books reaching above, pondering the question sincerely. I didn’t see any reason to not give her a sincere answer. She was unlike anyone I had ever seen before. Surely that warranted something, no? If not, Miru was markedly fond of her, and I figured that did. And, the Old Mist was no more; any Konoha shinobi knew, by now. There was nothing left to hide.

“I can trust you, I think.” I responded curtly.

“That is the history… of my land, you are holding.”

“It was taken from us, burned by our ruler and her religion.”

“You read. I’m sure you’ve come across them, somewhere… ‘The Church of the Latter-Day.. Whatever'.”

“Doesn’t matter. We killed them all. They’re all gone, now. Somewhere far, far away…”

“A new Mist will rise, with my devotion... will devour.. injustice.”

“…”

And then the house was silent, and I was inside another. It was day, but it felt night as I entered the next. A knife flung towards me.

Missed. HA. That was his only chance before his body lie messy on the floor. Steel was swung again. The pull of death was upon me now. Death frenzy. Opening wide to devour the life and the lifeless alike. Livers punctured, spinal cords split down the middle, piercing the calf and watching the rest squirm. Look at the ants. Look at the pigs, the cows, look see. Running forward and backward and in circles now. Escaping, escaping. No escaping. No god to save them. Noone helps. Death now. The night came to take them, even as the sun burned outside, like the hell that burned in my heart as I watched their pathetic scurrying. Steel swam and sunk, through blood, through orifices, between and inside squirm squish. No accidents, all intentional. All perfect, precision, the 90 degree angle, elbow sliced at the capitulum, the knee directly beneath the patella. More cries muffled as blood drowns the sound, then for good as the gargling comes to a close. Third and final, the one to end. Through the door, flying forward a form of white fire. Forward more through the body at the door.

Twice, four and six, stabbing the interior and the blade slides along the exterior. It rests on the inside of the cheek, looking into wide eyes one last time before digging through. And then there was no more standing cloth in the district of the affluent, and I would let the mask drop, allowing the wind to fill my body once more, composure and calm emanating, I left the scene.

I was on them before they knew it, riving and rending their bodies into segmented chunks of flesh and sinew and spattered blood. I was calm and quiet under the mask—if only because the stillness augmented the gratification. I could focus completely, tearing through them surgically, the eyes seeing everything as it happened, where it happened down deep within them. I felt the rush. The euphoria of true vengeance flooded my being, enveloping me, driving me to do more. I was in another room. Clean before not clean, and then another, and there the blood flew as well. Household items, cluttering the once-empty air, screams cluttering the air, clawing and fighting turned to pleading and begging. I didn't hear any of it, really. I saw their mouths, their vocal cords, the frailness beneath their clothes, but it didn't register in any immediacy. Didn't call me to acknowledge, care, or concern myself. It was silent, to me, and the light of judgement was the steel dulling its edges along bones and brick.

I dislodged it from the counter beside a sink covered in muck, and then I was in the last room. I witnessed their fear and trembling, their lifelong charading away from death now nothing as death loomed above, laughing and beckoning. Their eyes, staring open, unwilling to close, feeling every moment, savoring their last seconds. Their hands grasped one another, and it drove me more and more. I was across the room in a thudding heartbeat, moving with a viciousness and a venom. Dicing the bodies, flaying the flesh, opening the heart as their life-force poured out in front of me. Another step and death was there once more, and the horns piercing skull through eyes as teeth grit in anticipation. Wind up the stairs, riposte, second, third, and once more. It coursed more through. I was awake, fangs gnashing, solemn though, and silent. The whispering would end with the steel sliding out from the mouth. Prayer would end with hands separated from the arms that were separated from the bodies that were separated from unmoving mouths and still thoughts.

Tabi’s lifted softly from a square of flattened stone. I was afoot, sauntering on slowly as my sight explored the region. The expanse of ostentation, of diamonds, gold, and carelessness, extended along the edge of the village for another kilometer or so. And then the surroundings shifted in their condition, slowly taking on time-worn shades and bare ornamentation.

They stacked on top of one another, squeezed and compacted, suffocating any fear of a negative balance. Eventually my sight wasn’t alone there, and I myself would enter the plain land. A warmer, more hospitable atmosphere could be immediately felt, upon entering, especially when contrasted with the blood-sucking coldness that preceded it. It was empty, like everywhere else at this time. Clothes fluttered in the wind, hung and air-dried beyond the reach of their entrapped owners. I moved lightly through the narrow pathways through this area, attentive and searching for the cloth or other memorabilia that would signal church affiliation.

A small pack of strutting fur and iciness walked by as I glided through. Our eyes met, and a kind of extrasensory understanding was felt between us. Mirumiya was away for the moment. A certain business had to be dealt with, is what was told to me. One could never be sure, with their surreptitious kind. Nonetheless, it was nice to see kin ambling by, seemingly unaffected by the turmoil that had been wrought not long before. Then they were gone, as was I. Something had suddenly flared into attention; robes, movement, circling, hands outstretched, chakra fluttering between them. A congregation.

Gradually, the environment would change. Passages opened themselves wide to the sun, arms outstretched as they took in the cool air. The hard smoothness of packed dirt replaced itself with the silence of warm, white-washed stone. Alleyways disappeared entirely.

The colors changed as well—no longer the earthen tones of before, but instead pristine greys and whites, with the occasional blues of sea and sky sneaking their way in across wide-flowing curtains, metallic gilding, and the variety of other meretricious decorations indicative of wealth in overabundance. A district housing the affluent of the village, replete with all of the amenities one would expect.

I glared with disdain as my gait began to slow, further reviling at flashing images of these sybaritic inhabitants engaging in their pig-mouthed and gluttonous hedonism deep within the gaudy lairs they had built for themselves. Throwing their lives away in an orgy of food and drink and comfort. I would have liked to see this place burned down just as the church had been. It wouldn’t have done, though. Their spending was necessary if we were to remain afloat as a village. One day, though, I felt that I would enjoy watching them burn away. The remaining members of the Church would have to do, for now. I knew that many of the higher-ranking priests lived in this part of the village. Most hadn’t been at the church. They were hiding now, probably packing. They didn’t realize that it was too late.

The world transmuted at my request, opening itself to that upon which nothing could be missed. In mere moments the district was scanned, and my targets located and locked onto. I stuck to the shadows. I was the shade itself, and I moved as the shade, shifting from sector to sector until at once I was before the first manor. The horned mask that had hung quietly along the back of my neck was finally slid over my face, and a deep gravity fell over my being.

The air around me stilled itself, my thoughts become as pure void—death was present, eyes of night animating my own, penetrating into my soul where things got darker and darker. Maelstrom of loathing. Chakra flowed through my right hand as it pressed itself just outside the door’s lock, forcing itself into it. A click would sound. Faces two rooms away would furrow in puzzlement. I was inside now, still in commune with the shadows. I could hear whispers, prayers, and footsteps from a different direction. Several more pairs of footsteps, ascending this time. I saw it all. The one that would momentarily turn the corner would be the first to go. My fingers motioned, and a glint of steel next appeared lodged into the wall opposite me. The body withered to the floor; blood poured from the opening in his skull, puddling around his face as I stepped up and over him. There were screams now, cries as they saw the demon mask and the white robes standing over the blood falling.

And then there were no more screams. The screams were replacing with a dent in the floorboard, slowly filling with a sweet mixture of tears and blood. The others tried to remain silent, but I was an owl and a fox, and my gaze couldn't be hid from. It moved through the walls, opening itself to their furtive movements. I crept lightly, filling the air with tense anticipation, swarming and crawling through the untouched spaces of the home. Pearls, gold, diamonds, furniture of white and sky blue, matching contraptions lining counters and hanging from walls, technologies unseen by the poor, given like human hearts to the unworthy. The wealthy and the religious, in our village they huddled together, conspiring and conniving. Coopting spirit, appropriating truth in the service of ill ends, malevolence consumed by appearances of benevolence. But I saw through it all. And so did my blade, as it lost its silent stalking.

It was loud and searing, in seconds, and then through them to stop the screaming once more. The remaining two embraced one another, holding eachother tightly, bracing themselves for what only was inevitable. I only solified their embrace, only brought them closer, as the glinting instrument slid gently through the both of them, like a kabob wet with blood. It was done. But, there were more. There were always more. I left the manor, seeking.

In a way, maybe the external interference of the Leaf had been what we needed. And although they may have merely ordered our eradication of the religious Mist in an effort to further reduce our numbers, and thus render us even more incapable of rebellion, perhaps they hadn’t. It could have went either way, I thought—but, whichever way, I knew that underlying any order that flying nightmare would give would always be the interests of the Leaf. If our interests didn’t coincide with theirs, our interests would be callously maimed and forced silent. What could one do?

For now, I would seek the remnants of that false Mist. Their welcome had been overstayed even before it was, and I could taste the blood of vengeance on my tongue. The hunt was well underway. The cool, mist-affected wind pressed on my clothes, slipping past a calm and determined expression before coming to rest behind. It moved as I moved, following me as I weaved through dim alleyways and tiny passages not meant for weaving. The sun searched for me in its warm violence, finding me and losing me again and again. Large, stony structures impeded either side; I was forward and unblinking, airborne before finding a different path. Occasionally, the sun caught itself along the collection of brisk and successive movements that I’d made myself, but for the most part only the chill of dark shade could be felt. Something advancing could be seen during short instances where shade succumbed to light.

In every other instance, I was an unseen slash and an unannounced culling. I was attuned to the environment of fortified shapes and sizes throughout my forward-flying motions, listening, watching, feeling—sensing in that peculiar way a shinobi of my ilk could. I could feel the air moving, crossing and fading, jumping and delighting in its jump. Stepping moisture stumbling overhead, falling diagonal, down and slow, full speed and then slamming softly into the earth. Any aberrance from the ordinary was sought; I only found silence. The village remained fear-stricken, following the events at the Gate—the hurried, half-gasped tales of the carnage left them tucked beneath their blankets, shivering, with the occasional peak through the window before running back beneath. I was out in the thick of it. The atmosphere was changing.

I was calm as I weaved swiftly through the labyrinth of wood and stone. Earthy tones mixed with fluttering faces and broken sounds—my figure remained in motion. I was in the air, eventually, and my soles caught the lesser traction of a rooftop before accelerating once more. There were cube-shaped buildings, modest in size, and tightly packed together in this region. They weren’t slums, but neither could they have housed the affluent. I was still quite a distance from my destination. Even further, one could still see the gaping hole left in our once-looming gate, as if announcing to all of the village its absolute defeat and ruin. Dark clouds of charred residue still loomed over the site of decimation, as well. They were foreshadowing, calling in premonition to the deaf air. What would life be like, as subordinates to the Leaf? A slow dwindling of numbers, as we were sent to our deaths through implicit attempts at attrition? Would the village be set to burn away slowly, without a cost, without a fight? A slow dwindling, to appease and entertain the bloodlust of our new masters. The once noble Kirigakure, dragged into the mud by the weak, would now be finally placated by a village more powerful.

Could it all be attributed to a poor and depraved leadership, or were we also to blame? It had to have been our fault somewhat. The surrendering of one’s pride went a long way in pacifying the one completely. There had been no attempts at revolution, under the despotic control—hardly any resistance at all. It was true, we had been defeated long before Konoha and its opportunistic numbers had come knocking. It was a more subtle defeat, but a defeat nonetheless. Some of us had attempted keep the nobler spirit alive, that of the Bloody Mist—the true Mist—hiding it from view only to let it out when our pious overseers faltered in their seeing. But the numbers were few, even in the beginning, and only diminished as time passed, and that poisonous cobra of a religion sunk its fangs into our shinobi-base completely. So many had succumbed; our numbers had been internally decimated. Yet, perhaps that prior, torturous era had merely been a weeding out, a means to separate the devoted and true from the weak-willed and insignificant.

Rubble and ash lay before me in a grave pile. I rolled a small piece of the crumbled edifice in circles beneath my left tabi, mimicking the final swirls of smoke as they floated off into the sky.

This is what faith wrought. Trauma. Forced endings. In our world, faith was death, in that it forced in one a longing for another, less cruel world. The soon-dead had always used it, like cheap armor, to confront death before it occurred. They laid themselves in their caskets, shut and locked the lids, and waited arrogantly for it to overtake them. They had faith that faith offered more than death; that with an undying fidelity to their doctrines they would find something beyond this life once it was taken from them. I found the thought pitiful. I wondered, in their dying breaths, whether or not they finally realized that everything that they had hoped for, and all that they had lived for, had been a lie. That the world didn’t revolve around them, and that their doctrines had only ever been concepts, man-made. They had been lulled and lured by a mantra of false safety. But no one could escape death. It didn’t matter why—just that no one could. They didn’t understand; we had to show them the hard way. And their gods never came to their rescue.

In the end, they had been just like us. Just flesh and bone. No deity nor belief system would ever save them from that. The only belief that had ever mattered was belief in an idea. Belief in other worlds, in life after death, in a just world, were simply blatant attempts to escape from fear. All futile. Belief in an idea required a surging forward, into the uncertainty and the unknown, and not a sinking back. Pragmatic belief, I thought. Eventually I stopped thinking. I turned then from the rubble in a wind of flowing white, moving south now. The church was gone, but it would have been foolish to assume all of its members were. They scattered away, like ants yearning to be crushed. They had heard the news, I was sure; many had probably seen it, too. But no amount of running would save them. Judgement was inescapable. We would fall upon them like blood-drenched mist, steel-brandished and vengeful. Today would mark a mass sending. Any shinobi who had fallen into their trap would be removed from this world just the same. They were all the same. Wastes of space, all the same. I moved now to find them. I would.
