The sins of my past weigh heavily upon me. I understand that I can accomplish nothing with regret and that my shame does nothing but hinder me. Yet, I can naught but feel it, as they tear apart what little pride I have left. I ask myself – is this self imposed punishment – that I sabotage my joy? An attempt to delay divine retribution? I have never been a man of faith, but in these later years, I prayed and prayed. Why? I wanted to be forgiven.________________________________________
Three years ago...
”Please, no!” a black haired young boy wept, his arm extended as Jiyuu tore away an elderly man, his figure frail and face wrinkled. The Shikigami spared no word as he snapped his left foot into the man’s knee pit, followed by slamming his own knee into the man’s back. The elder plummeted forwards, nose cracking as he slammed into the grounds. Jiyuu reached into his vest, pulling forth a kunai, and plunged it into the man’s neck. “No!” the child yelped again, trembling, frightened to move. Beneath the mask, Jiyuu’s gray eyes locked with the boy’s before turning on his heels, walking through the door.
He stepped out of the tent into the main pathway of the camp – a refugee camp within Hi no Kuni, to be more exact, in which escapees of surrounding rural villages fled to. Known as Sanctuary, the camp was known to be a place of serenity in the rough times of the Second War, for it was orderly and well guarded. Enstehung, a group to which Jiyuu belonged, came to end all that. The Shikigami turned his head to the left, a grim frown on his face. The dozen tents that way were ablaze, burning the corpses within. Then, the man turned his head to the right, returning the blood stained kunai. There were still tents left that way. Around a dozen or so.
Jiyuu reached behind his head, tying the knot on the stolen Iwagakure headband. The massacre continues. he thought to himself, frown deepening.
