Hiromasa fell to the earth with a soft thump, leaving no traces of his passing on the tree-trunk above. A light sheen of chakra on the heels of his feet deadened the sound of his foot to a muted nothing - not even the bugs were distrubed as he slinked through the shadows.
There was, in truth, no actual need for such blatant secrecy. He was home, in Mizu no Kuni, and he was visiting his actual abode, or what remained of it, to reclaim a relic that had been in his family for generations. To the unskilled, it was a mere sword, but to the enlightened, it was so much more...
He came upon the clan home just as the sun fell beneath the mountains in the west, casting the land in perpetual shadow. The house lay in shambles, and body-shaped lumps littered the yard. The wind carried with it the rank odor of death and decay, accented by the freshly blooming azaleas on the back patio. They thrived, whilst the world around them fell to pieces. His home looked as if it had gotten into a fight with a Bijuu - the second floor wasn't even there at all.
"Now where did they hide the sword..."
He knew his family. His mother would've died protecting the Kage... or she might have killed him and fled herself, but she wouldn't have bothered with the sword - she didn't appreciate the flash. His father would've hidden the blade away, so as not to potentially lose it in battle, and his brother... his brother would've taken the sword into battle despite his father's wishes, convinced of his own immortality, and his sister...
She'd have found his brother's dead, broken body and returned the sword to its rightful place before failing to death herself. To the shrine it is...
Hidden beneath the house, in the center of an underground grotto, beneath one thousand gallons of water, the sword lay, untouched for the weeks since the catastrophe -
Or so he hoped.
He stepped through the threshold of his ancestral home, barely dodging a falling plan of wood. Everything was torn, from furniture to tables, and the blood of many stained the walls. Rennovation was impossible. The home would have to be destroed.
The entrance to the shrine was hidden quite artfully. Traps had been set around a number of faux entrances during the years he'd lived here - the true entrance was unprotected, save for the seal that opened only to blood. A false wall in the entrance room led to a downward sloping hall that curved into a domed room with neither doors nor windows, unto which entrance to the shrine could be gained, by a blood offering.
As he walked down the hall, he trailed his fingers along the wall, feeling the grains and cracks for the memories hidden beneath, echoes of the past that would never again gain shape.
And here we are...
He walked to the center of the room and pressed his index finger into the tile on the floor. He pulled it away just as quickly and a red drop was left behind, gllistening despite the absence of light. The tile flared bright white as the chakra was recognized, and the tile beneath his feet started to sink...
