The Missing Caravan

Shinobi Required: 1-4.
Mission Information: As one knows, the desert is a harsh mistress; she does not often provide rain to fill the water reserves in the village. The country is equipped with a coastline, but the water is filled with salt and thus not easily consumed. Therefore, caravans are sent out bi-weekly to the boarder countries to collect water from their rivers and lakes. Recently, a few of the caravans have been attacked on their trips—the people make it back safely, but the water does not. The Kazekage has asked a shinobi, or group of shinobi, to escort the caravan and make sure it returns to Sunagakure. Information about the attackers must also be gathered.
Special Information: Repeatable.

There was something to be said about how being responsible looked, that drew the eyes of others. Not that he could stand kids of course; he generally hated snot-nosed, naive little punks, but the aesthetic made for a nice touch, and caught a few eyes as well. "So kid. How'd you get through the academy so early? Most don't get through till twelvish." Masao spoke with the sage wisdom of a veteran seasoned with his fair share of summers, having seen academy students come and go over the years. Few were so lucky as to be passed into the world of shinobi at such a young age. It was almost odd. He'd guess him to be perhaps 8 or 9? Younger than average by far. The abnormality of his ranking was really quite intriguing. [/style]

Prying, inquisitive eyes fell upon both my captain(s) and I as we'd landed upon the earthen floor after having emerged from the third story of the Kazekage's tower. Funnily enough I looked at them as they looked at us, but even more so my captain, namely because they -both?- obtained the prodigious rank of Chuunin, one that I'd been determine to achieve long before I even graduated from the academy. I needed to surpass him in every and all ways, be it power, skill, rank, and even mental capableness, it didn't matter. I found myself drifting deep into thought, ruminating about a my mother and a dark unknown figure what was supposed to be my father. I knew nothing about him, his face, abilities, or even what he fully stood for. All I knew was that he was some 'icon of peace'.

Sadly, my thoughts were rudely interrupted by a voice that I still hadn't familiarized myself with just yet. My mind snapped back into place as my senses were overwhelmed by an assortment of maundering voices, pitter patters from footfalls, and the words of my captain which inquired about my age and graduation from the academy. It took a second, and only a second for me to process, deduce, and and accepted what was unfolding around me because from what I could gather we walked quite a distance from the kage's tower.

"So kid. How'd you get through the academy so early? Most don't get through till twelvish."

"I dunno to be honest, my mom just got me in and I kinda just did everything they told me, but between me and you two, hehe she gave me some extra help. And twelvish? wow that's pretty old, I'm only 7 haha! "

My body leaded back in laughter as the index finger of my right hand began to rub the bottom of my nose while giggling ever so innocently. Filled with limitless joy, he whipped out a quick kunai, one that was marked with a seal of the thunder god, though, I didn't know what the hell it was. I had hoped to find out one of these days, but until then, I just had to make myself stronger.

I found myself resenting the child less, although I still wasn't happy with my assignment. The child's constant laughter was something that wore on me, as was his cheery attitude. We were ninja! Albeit, with the treaty of the Great Five, I had to concede that we saw far less bloodshed than before, but despite that, our job was still far from light-hearted. Then again, I allowed that perhaps the kid hadn't yet been exposed to the sort of naievity destroying activity that went on in the shinobi world. At seven, he probably was born near or just after the end of the last great conflict, when Uchiha Kouketsu supposedly levelled Konohagakure at will. I had no idea what they taught kids in the academy these days, but I had doubts that a seven year old knew much of the more destrutive and depressing realities that came with conflict in the ninja world. Perhaps this mission would serve as an eye-opener for him. ____________________________ I couldn't help but wonder what Masao had in mind for this mission. He was keeping me locked out, despite my asking him of his plans. It was kind of painful, really. It was rare that he did this, and usually it was when he was planning something bad. I wanted to scorn him for it, but I couldn't find the words. It was hard to criticize when you had no idea was going on. I hove an inward sigh, and resigned myself to staring at the passing buildings as Masao trudged along, our body moving closer to the village gates with every step across the sandy streets. Eventually I opened my mouth to speak to the boy. "Have you ever been outside of the village on a mission before? The world we know is a pretty big place." Oh, and it was. We had about a day's trek through the desert to make it to the coast, and from there, we'd have to travel at least another to the south, towards the smaller villages where the raids were being conducted. It would be a long trip, to say the least. I only hoped that my two team-mates were prepared. [/style]

"Hehe, what can I say, I'm good at what I do, plus I've got motivation y'know!"

I spoke boisterously, brimming with pride and confidence, I may have come across as arrogant a little, but hey, not like I gave a damn, besides, I was only seven years old, what'd I know about arrogance, it was my nature to have that childish confidence. But truth be told I was just a hard worker who was naturally gifted and often pushed by my mom to always study even though it was always boring and made me sleepy after a while, but in the end it all paid off. Just being a Genin at this age made me steps ahead of others, but not all, I still had a ways to got, especially if I wanted to surpass him.

We made our way to the village gates -my captain(s) and I- with a steady gait, but one that still held a healthy desire to alleviate the problem that had been delegated to us by the 'Higher ups' of Sunagakure. Mission didn't seem too hard at all to me, or perhaps that was just my childish confidence speak, who knows. But with 2 - well, 3 people technically on our squad, this shouldn't be a problem. My marked kunai twirled around my middle finger spinning it to keep my attention occupied, because lets face it, no matter how much we talked to one another, it would eventually get boring, but I had the advantages of a childs imagination, so everything was pretty damn exciting to me.

"Have you ever been outside of the village on a mission before? The world we know is a pretty big place."

Another voice albeit drastically different than the previous, called out to me with words of inquiry, wanting to know had I even been out of the village on a mission. I was a adventurous tike, I'd been out of the village on several occasions, however, on while on missions, I'd have to say no, though I did exceed alot of others I was still a genin and had to stick to genin regulations, and that included missions.

"I've been out the village plenty of times, just not on missions y'know. My mom has taken me out sometimes too when I needed hands on experience with my training and what not. So, what about you, what kinda things have you see out in this big world? I'm sure they're interesting hehee!"

I was sure that the kid knew about most of them anyway, but it never hurt to go in detail, and besides, I was fairly confident that it would keep the kid interested. I tried not being to enthusiastic about it, though, because I didn't want the kid getting any fresh ideas about riding scorpions or anything crazy or potentially lethal. Still, I couldn't help my eyes glazing over a bit as I recalled the one time I was tasked with saving a species of beetle from extinction at the hands of salamanders. Masao seemed mostly disinterested, almost mocking the conversation in his thoughts. I could tell, mostly by the arrogant vibe he was giving off, so I tried to keep things mostly aloof, so I didn't inspire the typical cheesy "That's sooooo cool" line. Either way, when I was done, I gave the kid a smile, and let a hand slide out from Masao's back, signing him with a thumbs up for good measure. I didn't just want to be seen as the boys squad leader, I wanted him to know I was a friend, too. Someone he could confide in, and trust. I wasn't so sure about Masao, though, and that was what worried me. Even if we shared minds, there were some things I never could quite understand about him, no matter how much I tried... "Don't let him fool you, kid, it ain't all roses. There's a lot of fucked up shit that goes on out here. It's cooled down since the war ended, sure, but people still get killed, every day. Hell, we might end up doing some killing ourselves if this whole thing goes sour. You prepared for that? Are you ready to kill if you have to?" Sure, you could say it was wrong of me to ask that of a seven year old, and maybe you'd be right, in whatever fucked up world you live in. But as far as I was concerned, the moment he put on that headband, he became an adult, and it was hardly my fault if his momma pushed him into a life of murder and destruction. If he couldn't handle the job description, then that was no worry of mine. Even with that said though, I didn't want him thinking that killing was something to be enjoyed, either. I mean sure, everyone enjoys a good fight; going all out, and prevailing over your foe, but needless killing is senseless. I didn't want the kid to think that mindlessly shedding blood was cool. Maybe I wasn't the best of people to set up a moral compass for him, hell, I didn't give two shits about most people, but despite leaning on what might be considered the wrong side of things, I wasn't going to try to corrupt someone else's kid into becoming a mass-murdering machine. Besides, if I tried, he'd probably wail to his mommy, and I'd either get fired, or get killed, depending on who his parents were. The world didn't take kindly to shit disturbers after Kouketsu went on a worldwide rampage. I sighed, as we passed through the village gates, and stepped out into the wide, arid desert. It was going to be a hot day, but thankfully, as always, I had dressed just for the occasion, sporting my usual white robe and vest, which kept most of the heat at bay. "Me? Uh, I've seen lotsa stuff, I guess. Giant scorpions, Big snakes, vultures, armadillos..."

My eyes lit up with excitement as my captain began to go through a list of things that he'd experience and possibly battled during his adventures outside of Sunagakure walls. I cute him a smile from ear to ear as my mind flit about, thinking of the endless possibilities of fun that I could have riding Big snakes, Giant scorpions, even having them as pets. I liked this side of my captain, though the names did still in fact confuse me, so I just decided to wing it for a while until I could familiarize myself.

"Oh man, that sounds like alotta fun, you think we'll be able to find some and ride them?! hehee that'd be a story to come home with and tell mom."

So far these guys were pretty interesting, however, I couldn't say the same for the other brother. He was pretty bold and adamant, although his statement is true, he didn't need to word it in such a negative way, at least I thought so. "Don't let him fool you, kid, it ain't all roses. There's a lot of fucked up shit that goes on out here. It's cooled down since the war ended, sure, but people still get killed, every day. Hell, we

might end up doing some killing ourselves if this whole thing goes sour. You prepared for that? Are you ready to kill if you have to?" My inherited apathetic gaze spawned itself upon my face, staring him down as if having an urge to cure him of his own life with the cold edge of my kunai knife, I didn't like people like him, negative and having no drive to pay attention to the feelings of others. For several seconds that seemed overly long my focus remained hard upon his frame, no faltering an inch in reserve as I'd trudged seamlessly through the streets without paying full attention before giving me retort.

"I know there are bad things waiting out there, but its no point in stating the obvious. . .and if you must know, I'm ready to kill something right now."

An eerie grin swept across my face as we'd finally step through the gates of Sunagakure, venturing out into the vast, and near endless desert that surrounded it. Things got quiet, at least for Hiraki, if there was one thing he hated, it was people bringing down his fun when it was very much needed.

Cheeky. I like that." My eyes narrowed a bit as the kid spoke, catching the semblance of what he'd said. I wouldn't normally let something like that go unanswered, but for a kid, I'd let it slide. For now. After all, I had no idea who this kid's parents were. He coulda been the son of the Nidaime himself, for all I knew. I laughed to myself at the idea; last I'd heard the old man spent his days staring out a window. Besides, I could harldy imagine someone so vengeful and full of malice bringing a child into the world. Even so, someone in the corps was this kid's mother, and I didn't want to mess with the son of another ninja. It would only bring me more agony than it was worth dealing with. I stretched my arms out, and continued walking. It would take a bit time, but I didn't mind that. I was content to walk in the relative silence that followed; unless of course, the kid felt he needed to say something. ____________________ "Masao, you always suck the fun out of everything. Lighten up, would you?" Sure enough, my brother was being his whole self; arrogant and full of hot air. There were times I just wanted to separate from him and give him a good solid kick in the ass. Then again, he did have a point, which was probably the only reason I didn't do it. That, and because he'd probably break my leg if I tried. There was something about this kid, though. Something I couldn't place. The look he gave just screamed something sinister, and it felt like I was staring into the eyes of Nidaime-sama when he made the speech about Iwagakure those long seven years ago. I remembered that moment vividly. He speech was ablaze with malice and righteous fury at having been attacked, and with a wry, vile grin, he had announced that we would incite our vengeance on the Village of Earth. Not that we really needed to, for it wasn't long before we learned that Kouketsu Uchiha had already done so. In the silence that followed I began pondering things, things I'd never really bothered to think about before. I wondered just what connection the Nidaime had to Kouketsu, and why we allied with him and his ninja from mist. The more I thought, the more I realized that there were gaps in my knowledge that just didn't add up, and it bothered me. There had to be more to this than what we'd been told, and now, for some reason, I wanted to know more. Still, it would have to wait a while, at the very least until this mission was over. I could always go searching for information later. For now, though, I'd enjoy the relative peace, and the warm sun of the desert, as we made our way methodically to the East. [/style]

Things got quiet, not that I wanted to, but it seemed like that look was the cause of it. Maybe I overreacted, but even I just strongly felt like he shouldn't have ruined a perfectly good moment of joy. Needless to say I got my point across, or maybe they didn't take me serious, I couldn't tell at the time. A pervasive wall of silence hung between us as we continued to trek through dunes of sand on a eastern bound path, my eyes indecisively began to flicker between the distant horizon and sight of my captain walking. I never liked silence, or anything that felt like hostile tension no matter who caused. With that said, I'd decided to break the ice once more, yet, attempted to divulge in more 'personal' matters.

"So, Isao-Taicho, what made you want to become a ninja? I'm sure its something interesting, you seem like such a nice person."

My tone returned to a more childish pace, removing the apathetic countenance along with the voice and emotions it entailed. This wasn't some small talk question, I was -in all honesty- curious as to why he became a soldier in sunagakure's military force. As for Masao, right now I had no interest in speaking with him at the time, namely because I always distanced myself from those with a negative polarity.

I suppose would be the word to use, but then again, I was sure he had his reasons. It was nice that he was trying to take an interest, though. I appreciated that, since he seemed to show an affinity more towards me than Masao. Then again, I assumed it was more because of Masao's general attitude towards new people. I was sure Hiraki would warm up to him eventually. "Well... no, that's not the only reason, I guess... I also do it because I like helping people, and this job gives me a lot of opportunities to help out the village." It was true. I liked helping people. It was something that just came naturally to me, I guess. Masao wasn't a fan of my generosity most times, but he was mostly selfish anyway. As for me, well... I took the job as a chance to help defend the village, and keep it safe, and it's people happy. Albeit, maybe I was a bit... too friendly at times... but even so, I was pleased as punch to do whatever it took to aid the village, the country, and whoever really needed it. Maybe that made me naive, but I didn't care. I just wanted to lend a hand, and that wasn't so wrong, was it? The two idiots kept on talking as we walked, but I didn't much care. I was already formulating plans to ambush the attackers in question. Albeit, I wasn't quite aware of what the kid could do, I made a mental note to Isao to try and draw it out of the kid while we travelled. I wanted to know what I had at my disposal for dealing with these punks. Thankfully though, we'd be out of the desert once we reached the coast, more around an area that resembled wasteland and fertile growing ground. That would help vastly, as it meant neither myself nor Masao would be limited by our surroundings. Things would be so much easier. [/style]
