It was early morning; Haru had only recently arrived in Kaminari no Kuni, and was ready to begin his search. He’d traveled through most of the night, only sleeping one or two hours; this due to his determination, and the fact that he hated travelling. The first thing he’d noticed upon entering this mountainous region was the cold; it was much cooler than the fiery temperatures of Hi no Kuni, and took some getting used to. He decided it was enjoyable after an hour or so, and began to make his way through the rough terrain that surrounded him and this country.

He would activate his Byakugan as he continued, scanning the new environment with an excited expression. “wow..” The difference between this country and his former one intrigued the young Hyūga, it was unlike anything he’d ever seen. There were cliffs and mountains for as far as he could see, though, here and there, they dropped off and small camps could be seen. He wouldn’t go snooping around them, as he wasn’t sure how they’d react to outsiders. He wasn’t looking for trouble, as it wouldn’t be hard to get killed off in places like these.

He could tell just by looking that the hidden village would be hard to find, but he was a patient kid and would hunt until it was located. Thus, when nothing was found from day one’s exploration, he wouldn’t panic but instead work even harder. The morning of the second day had just begun when the boy set off, intent on finding this hidden village and truly beginning life his new life as a Shinobi. Hours quickly passed, and he found nothing as he trekked across this treacherous country; though, he did keep his eyes open, looking for anything that may lead him to the village.

[atrb=border,0,true] Grassy plains with outcrops of rock and stone sprawled out against the horizon for as far as the eye could see, a cold wind howling throughout the scenery like a lost spirit of the damned. The sky was listless, drab and dead. A seemingly eternal gray shielding the heavens from view. Mountains could be seen in the distance to the east, and a myriad of pine trees to the north. Far west, where the Hyuuga's homeland lay, the setting was covered with tall grass. And southbound, the scenery would drop to reveal the treacherous cliffs that lead to the stormy bay below. There was an ocean smell in the air, and an unsettling quiet. Despite the various small campsites located here and there, the land of Kaminari no Kuni seemed to be an empty one. As uninhabited and alone as nature had intended it to be. To some, the country of Thunder was a haunting example of nature's power. And the reason why currently loomed over the southern horizon. A storm was brewing. The Hyuuga had ample time to search for cover before it came, but exactly what direction he would take was up to him. As he continued to walk, he would find a fork in his path. One that lead to the pine trees afar- a forest that seemed like any another in Kaminari no Kuni- and one that lead to the snow-capped mountains to the east, imposing yet beautiful. Surely, both settings would provide some form of temporary shelter- but where would the Hyuuga proceed?

Haru maintained a rapid pace as he made his way through Kaminari no Kuni; simultaneously, his Byakugan observed his surroundings for anything peculiar. Therefore, when the sky began to darken and winds sped up, he knew it was time to seek shelter. He was traversing through the lightning country, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t expected some sort of storm during his travels. However, he’d hoped it wouldn’t happen. It made him wonder how often these sort of things happened here; in Hi no Kuni storms like this struck rarely, and if they did it was never anything serious.

Looking up he could tell these clouds were different, and had a feeling if he didn’t hurry and find some type of cover, he’d never make it to the hidden village. He’d have to stop as there was a fork in his path now, he was quick as he scanned both areas in search of the best protection. There were large mountains on one end, and a forest on the other — he’d hurriedly sprint that way, as it’d be the quickest. He wasn’t too experienced with things like this, and wasn’t sure when the lightning would actually hit; but regardless, he did know it was better to be safe than sorry.

He’d arrive in the forest as fast as legs would take him, and seek shelter under a growth of small standing trees — this way, if thunder hit one of them, he’d be able to dodge as it fell. He’d stay there until he was sure the storm had subsided, and then continue in his hunt for Kumogakure no Sato.

[atrb=border,0,true] The storm was not silent, nor did it pass with ease. The Hyuuga who had traversed across the plains via a lonely dirt path, into the pine forests to the north, would find the air growing more frigid by the second. The growing storm clouds afar, pursuing from the south as if it were a giant living being, was increasing in momentum and power. This was one of many daily visits to the land of Thunder, and the faceless ravager of these lands for centuries. Shelter was taken by the leaf ninja who had dared to search this strangely attractive, but deadly scenery. And as the light drizzle of rain began to fall, it had indeed protected him from the threat of getting drenched. The longer he would wait in cover, the more intense the storm would get. A howling wind sweeping past the pine trees, carrying leaves and small branches and whipping them across. The crackles and snaps that rung throughout the setting were frequent, but nearly impossible to discern from that of lightning and branches being tossed around and broken. They both sounded the same; they both brought a threat. Thunder rumbled up above in the dark, charcoal gray sky. It was not yet night, for the day still had a few agonizing hours left to stay alive. While the Hyuuga continued to wait out the storm under his improvised cover, a formidable danger would approach ever closer. The eye of the storm had arrived, but the tempest would return in a few minutes. Silence overtook the pine forest in which the leaf ninja had sought refuge. Nothing but the whistle of a breeze and an occasional rumble of thunder. Then suddenly... the howl of wolves in the distance. They were approaching from the west, from the depths of the pine forest itself. And if the Hyuuga were to use his birthright, he would easily spot them 35 meters away. A pack of eight in total, the alpha taking the lead- a beast that could easily be mistaken for a full-grown brown bear. They were running towards his position, snarling yet unaware of his presence. Only when they reached a ten meter distance would they notice him through their smell and sight. They approached him in a formation similar to that of the V ducks took in flight. But did the Hyuuga have what it took to evade or defeat them?

Intense winds sped through the forest as the storm raged; it was easy to hear the cracking noise of branches and other fragments snapping and flying through the vicinity. Haru had been solely focused on the thunder at first, and would wince as he was struck across the neck by one. Subsequent to this, he’d cover his head and dive into a ducking position. He’d wait there, silently contemplating on where he would venture after the tempest. It would take some time before everything slowed a bit, but once it did, he’d take the time to reassess his current situation.

Thunder still sounded in the vicinity, and he didn’t think it’d be safe to leave quite yet. Instead, his Byakugan would scan everything around him, mainly in an attempt to see how much damage the lightning had done. However, what he saw was even more alarming — just coming within his Kekkai Genkai’s fifty meter range were a large pack of wolves. He was sure they hadn’t actually spotted him; nevertheless, they were heading toward his direction. He didn’t want to waste energy fighting them in the midst of a storm, and so began to search his mind for ideas.

A few moments had passed as he mulled over the subject, during which the wolves had covered about 15 meters. A howl then sounded, which kicked his mind into high gear; in that instant, his eyes would stumble upon a fallen branch. If not for the urgency, he would have probably taken the time to scold himself for not thinking of it earlier. henge!! Following one quick hand-seal, he would be transformed into a thick branch. His new form would land on the side of a nearby tree, right out of the wolves’ path. He’d revert once the wolves were far enough away.

[atrb=border,0,true] The wolves would arrive, and the storm would nearly return. The sound of clawed paws thumping on and leaping off the leaf covered ground reverberated as they shot past the Hyuuga's location, the stench of wet dog and their various trails of slobber being left behind in their wake. They were one of the top hunters of this long-lived forest, and they had been for centuries. There when humans had yet to inhabit it, there when the First Shinobi War had erupted, there when the last Shinobi War had nearly destroyed it all. And their enhanced animal senses were not to be underestimated. The validity of such a tip would be proven when the last of the pack came to a slow stop near the Hyuuga's location. The rest of the pack- including the Alpha- would continue on forward. But this one, this black furred and toothed creature, would stay behind. It smelled something... a strange smell. A smell it vaguely recognized. Dropping its head down low, with its sickly blue snout down to the ground, the creature would begin to sniff with meticulous concentration. As each second passed, its nose would draw itself closer and closer to the wooden branch that was currently the Hyuuga in hiding. This smell, it was drawing some sort of fear in the fanged creature. A memory of fire and pain, a kunai being thrown at it. It needed to discover what this was. Its nose would finally touch the branch in question, a paw would slap down upon it- once, twice and then a third time. Perhaps the branch needed to be broken to unleash the smell it was currently investigating? A wolf from the pack appeared in the horizon of the pine forest, curious as to where their eighth member had gone, what it had found and whether it could be eaten. The black wolf eyeing the branch caught sight of his companion afar, and decided it was time to leave- with the interesting stick. So it tenderly scooped it up with its tongue into its fanged mouth, a treasure to be taken, a curious little object it wanted to investigate some more in its den. That smell had caught its attention... another animal? A howl from its companion afar caused it to cease from wondering any longer. It was time to leave. So it exited the copse of trees where it had obtained the strange smelling tree limb and paced off towards the direction of its pack with branch in mouth. It had begun to rain once more, the wind in the area started to pick up. The storm was returning. And with each rain drop that touched its pelt, the wolf would run a little faster beside its brown furred companion to catch up with the rest of the pack. After covering a distance of about 150 meters, the storm had finally managed to return in its full-force. Wind whipped branches across violently, and one of them managed to strike the black canine. It whimpered, dropping the Hyuuga branch hanging in its mouth and scampering away. It no longer cared for the branch. It would need to escape the storm as quickly as possible, and cross the large river 20 meters ahead cautiously. And the Hyuuga in stick form? He would be left in the middle of the pine forest among other pieces of forest rubble, 30 meters away from a cliff side to the north, forced to revert back to his human form lest he wanted to be swept away like the other branches. Now came the dilemma: finding a reasonable form of shelter that would be able to withstand the strong winds, and ever present thunderbolts. The answer, the rocky cliffs to the north, seemed to be the clearest option, but perhaps the river lead somewhere as well?

He worked his hardest to stay focused as one wolf turned back and was drawing closer. Could it possibly know what he truly was? He didn’t understand how, but it seemed to be heading in his direction as if it did. can it smell me…? He wasn’t sure what would happen, but decided not to turn back into human form unless it was about to eat him. That was what he feared as it opened his mouth, it had happened too quickly for him to react; fortunately, it simply scooped the branch into its mouth, and after a distant howl, ran back to rejoin the rest of the pack.

Though it didn’t show, his mind was in a constant state of panic for the length of time the wolf carried him. It was a weird, scary experience to be carried in a creature’s mouth; one he never planned on going through again. After traveling for what felt like a lifetime, the wolf would finally drop the branch — this due to the storm picking back up. He’d wait on the ground until they were gone, and then, after almost being swept into the air, transform back into his original self. As he surveyed the area, a new predicament now introduced itself to the young boy.

Go toward the river as the wolves had, or head for the rocky cliffs that lie in the north. The storm’s power was back at its peak, so he wouldn’t have much time to decide. After several quick moments, he’d begin to sprint in the direction of the cliffs, this because he had pictured the village as something hidden in between, or behind rugged mountains and such. Moreover, he didn’t think it’d be safe to be too close to that river while the storm was so severe. Wasting no more time, Haru would now run at full speed as he made his way toward the crags that lie ahead.

[atrb=border,0,true] The Hyuuga would push through the powerful storm as he advanced towards the cliff face afar, running as fast as his feet would allow him to do so. Thunder roared angrily in the clouds above. Chilled rain pelted down onto the dead leaves covering the forest ground, frigid air lightly numbing any exposed area of human flesh on the lad. Then suddenly-- a lightning strike. Luckily for the leaf ninja, the streak of electricity had touched down a few hundred meters away, with such a deafening crack that his ears would remain ringing for a minute of his time. Branches whipped across him as he continued, leaves tossed up into the air to create whirlwinds blinding his normal vision from time to time. But eventually, the Hyuuga would reach the cliff he had been rushing towards. Nature's great wall stood 400 meters high, with a steep and craggy face which only the insane had ever attempted to climb. Bird nests could be seen from below, piled neatly in between the rocks that jutted out from the cliff. Branches also stuck out from the face like untamed weeds. When the leaf ninja reached this particular area, he would immediately notice the fresh smell of water somewhere nearby. Whatever was on the other side of the cliff was currently unable to be seen, the cliff being too thick and large to be scoped through. Upon further evaluation of the cliff side, however, the young man in question would take notice of a small cave opening nearby that lead into a somewhat complicated network of passageways. There was also the option of following the cliff side eastward back towards the river, or westward and deeper into the pine forest that ran along its border- not to mention the mountains somewhere in that general direction. The decisions were there, including the attempt to climb the cliff itself, and the leaf ninja only need to choose. The storm, however, was not going to let up anytime soon, and the threat of lightning strikes and wild animals was still very present. Kaminari no Kuni was not so welcoming to those who wandered about it so freely. Especially when the sun fell and night came around.

The sound of thunder jarred the boy, suddenly forcing him to the ground. He would scramble to get back up, subsequently rubbing his ears in an attempt to stop them from ringing. After gathering himself, the former Konoha-nin continued his race toward the cliff-side. Haru would become instantly aware of a fresh scent of water as he arrived; though his gaze focused in on the rocky expanse, at this moment the cliff’s size would truly dawn on the boy. It had to have been hundreds of meters high, and was actually too broad for his gaze to see through.

However, his pale eyes still scanned the area around the cliff, in search of a path that’d lead him closer to his destination. He could choose to go westward, which would lead him deeper into the pine forests, or east along the side of the cliff and back toward the river, or try to climb the cliff itself. He’d strike the thought down as soon as it appeared within his head, as climbing something like that would leave him exhausted, and he didn’t know how much energy he’d need to find this village. His eyes continued to scan the cliff as he dismissed this idea.

During that time he spotted a small cave opening, inside of which he could see the beginning of a complex set of tunnels. Another wave of roaring thunder overwhelmed the former Konoha-nin, and he decided it’d be best to stick with the caves. Where others may have been at a disadvantage inside them, his Byakugan would show him the way. In addition, staying out could actually mean being struck by one of those bolts. It was a risk he couldn’t take; therefore, he’d began his hurried trek along the side of the cliff and into the sheltering cave.

He’d be able to see the nearby dead-ends with his Byakugan, and thus continue toward the right path, in an attempt to make his way through the cave and out to the other side of the cliff.

[atrb=border,0,true] The hollow echo of dripping water was constant within the dark and damp cave. For any normal folk, it would have been impossible to traverse through this maze of stone and puddles without losing one's self for a lengthy amount of time. But luckily for the Hyuuga, he was different. His vision would allow him to see the dead ends of each passageway, and go by quickly enough to feel like he was going some headway to the exit on the other side. Blessed, he was... or so one would think. Minutes passed- ten, twenty, a half hour. And with each passing second, the realization that he might just be going in some sort of distorted circle came to light. The path he was taking started to look rhythmical, turning to the left, turning to the right, and the right once more. Passageway after passageway traversed. Footwear stomping down on old cave weeds and mushrooms as he continued forward, his head occasionally being bombarded by drops of water that dripped from the cave ceiling. The whole process would drive any typical commoner mad, and the perplexing fact that a Hyuuga was having trouble finding an exit even more so. Something was obviously awry. And from the entrance from which he'd come, the Hyuuga could hear the storm continuing to rage outside. Growing even stronger still; the visible and threatening roars of thunder echoing throughout the cave like a beast had been awoken. And before the young man could even think of exiting the cave through the same entrance he'd used, an explosion of noise vibrated throughout the entire natural formation. A sound that could easily be discerned as that of rocks being struck by lightning, and the horrible, ear-splitting crack of a pine tree being ripped apart and thrown down. The lightning was as violent as it had ever been before. The entire cave shook with its presence, rocks dropping from the ceiling, puddles rippling with the force of the impact that ran along the ground. Should the Hyuuga attempt to leave through the entrance he'd used, he would find the path covered by a giant rock slide- impossible to destroy or remove with just one man. No, now he would have to find his way out of this little maze of deceit. And fast. With each passing minute, lightning would continue to strike and shake the cliff violently. More rock slides were imminent. Moving through the passageways, the Hyuuga would take notice of a few curious things. Puddles were frequent in the stone setting. The dripping water above never seemed to stop. One puddle lay surrounded by weeds and mushrooms, and had a diameter of 2 meters. It lay pressed up against a cave wall. He would also spot a star-nosed mole walking slowly towards an unknown destination in the cave passageway. A strange creature of the underground, blind but resilient. Then, of course, there were the bats. The rats of the underground, nestled up on a ceiling in the middle of a spacious cave room- the scent and presence of guano ever so obvious. Other than that, the cave was completely barren and empty of solutions to the Hyuuga's eyes. Where or what would he do next?

In the beginning, he’d actually believed he was getting somewhere; however, as he hurriedly made his way through it became apparent that he wasn’t. It was true that his Byakugan aided him in avoiding the dead ends; however, the tunnels were seemingly endless, to the point where it felt like he’d been searching for hours. His expression emanated frustration as the young boy rushed through the now familiar tunnels. ”what is going on...?” It struck Haru that maybe he’d been running in circles, as he’d seen the exact same weeds about five times now.

It was peculiar; now that he’d paused to reflect on it, he noticed there were many peculiar things in this cave. Whether it be the countless amount of puddles, the excessive dripping of water…. “a mole?” While thinking, a small star-nosed mole had passed across his line of sight. He’d watch it for a few seconds, his frustration now turning into confusion. This current train of thought would be lost as a loud banging noise sounded throughout the cave. He still hadn’t adjusted to such noises, and, once again, it had brought him down to his knees.

The lightning continued, louder than ever. He’d pay even closer attention as a crashing noise, one that seemed even closer than the others had, echoed through the tunnels. He wasn’t too sure what had caused it, though a few theories had came to mind. Hoping it wasn’t what he’d though it was, Haru would jump up and sprint back toward the entrance. His Kekkai Genkai spotted it before he came close, the opening had caved in and the entrance was now barred shut. He wouldn’t attempt to move it, Haru knew it’d be futile — he was stuck.

As he pondered on what to do next, reality would hit him hard. There was a strong possibility that he could end up dead here. Especially if he didn’t think of something quick, as he’d be foolish to think there wouldn’t be more landslides such as that one. He’d run back to where he’d been before, now noticing everything in a newer light. He’d completely missed the fact that there were bats everywhere, as well the strong stench of their droppings. He guessed it’d been because of the fact that he’d been running, and focused on making his way out.

It didn’t really matter; the only thing that mattered now was making it out alive. As he arrived at his previous location, Haru would search for that mole again and find it not too far from an especially large puddle. The boy would walk near it, using his Byakugan to try to see what lie under. He wasn’t sure, as the continuous hammering of thunder had given him a sharp head-ache, and made his vision blur. He’d reach down toward the pool, feeling that it was deeper that he’d expected. He wasn’t sure what to think, and instead would stand there, confused.

[atrb=border,0,true] With his most recent inspection, the Hyuuga would find that the puddle was indeed deeper than he had expected it to be before. But exactly how deep, he had yet to find out. Meanwhile, as the leaf ninja remained beside the cave weeds and mushrooms located at the bank of the "puddle", the star-nosed mole he had spotted earlier would continue to approach its destination- the very curiosity the blonde-haired youth had come across just now. The mole would then proceed to shuffle past the mushrooms and weeds with its dirt-covered claws, pushing those potential food items away while sniffing vigorously with its pink nose- the small tentacles on squiggling without pause. Then, slowly, it would proceed into the dark water of the cave pool, shivering with the cold only for a moment. The semi-aquatic creature, in a matter of seconds, would then disappear beneath the crystalline liquid. Whether this meant that the pool did indeed lead somewhere or not would still be up to debate. The Hyuuga would not be able to discern its exact length or density until he dove in. Another thunderbolt hit the cliff, and shook the cave once more. Rocks fell from the ceiling, followed by the splish-splash of water. Something was going to occur soon, that much was sure. And now, a decision would have to be made. Whether the leaf ninja wanted to continue on and attempt to exit via the hidden pool- unaware whether there was a dead end further on or not- or attempt any other methods he might have had in mind. A small bubble would arise from the pool and pop. And just when that had happened, the Hyuuga would notice the steady trickle of water covering the cave floor. The cave was filling with water, but whether it would reach dangerous levels or not was still unclear. Thunder and lightning once more. The tension was rising. The bats afar cried out with the surprise, awoken from their evening slumber. When a third lightning strike made contact with the earth above, they shrieked out in unison and flew past the Hyuuga in a flock, towards the dark corridor afar. It was time for the leaf ninja to put himself to action and go forth with any decision he'd made.

His headache left as quickly as it’d arrived, he’d take a few moments gather himself and get his senses back in order. As he did this, the small mole he’d recently had his eye on would make its way over. He’d watch with mild curiosity, though he knew there wasn’t too much time he could spare. His pale eyes witnessed in surprise as it actually jumped into the large puddle in front of him. Almost instantly, the boy would reach his arm down into it — there was no resistance. He produced a wide grin, now thinking there was a possibility he could make it out unscathed.

It was either this, or continue searching for a different way out with what little time he had left. Hurriedly contemplating on the dilemma, he eventually decided there was surely another side of this small underground pool, as the mole had to have been planning on going somewhere. His eyes would search the vicinity one last time, making sure there wasn’t some pathway he’d over-looked. After several more seconds, and the loud clatter of lightning hitting the cliff, he decided it was time to go. He’d dive head first into the puddle, just as another round of thunder and lightning sounded overhead.

[atrb=border,0,true] The frigid sting of the water would overwhelm his senses the moment he dove into the puddle head first. The darkness of it all was thick like chocolate pudding, a darkness that consumed all light and embraced the freeze it formed. As the Hyuuga continued to swim into this nightmarish underwater tunnel, the dull sound of rocks crashing down could be heard echoing throughout the water. And as the ninja moved forward even further, as there was now no going back, he would spot the mole at the floor of the watery passageway. It was digging into the soil beneath, a cluster of worms floating up into the water like pink confetti. Seconds under the water would pass, the first bubble of released air exiting through the leaf ninja's nostrils. The task was not easy, but he would have to continue on with all the willpower he could muster to make it through. The tunnel grew tight, and at times it swerved downwards, always on the brink of becoming a dead end, but never doing so. As long as it seemed to be, there was indeed an end to it. The Hyuuga would find himself on his last gathered breath, struggling to refrain from submitting to the cold, as he began to swim upwards towards whatever oxygen his lungs could obtain. At first, he'd be too busy catching his breath and trying to refrain from shaking, after he'd emerged from the pool, to notice the sound of the cave rumbling all around him. But after swimming to the shore of this hidden reservoir, the Hyuuga would then realize the danger he was still in. Soaking wet, drenched to the bone, freezing with the cold, the leaf ninja had no time to start a fire just now and warm up. He was still in the cave after all, and needed to exit as soon as possible. The threat of rock slides echoed throughout the spacious cave room. After using what little time he could spare to prepare some things, should he desire to waste that time to do so, the Hyuuga would need to advance towards a cave corridor at the end of the room. He would then follow it, and reach a crossroads. The path to the left was littered with bat guano and mice. The path in the center was covered with all sorts of strangely colored fauna, with a few flowers here and there. And the path to the right was steadily growing wetter by the second. The smell of fresh air was present, but from which path the Hyuuga would be unsure. Should he activate his kekkai genkai, he would find that each path was far too long and dark to discern whether it was the correct one or not. He would need to advance dozens of meter before finding a hint of daylight with his vision... but with which corridor? Deciding would have to be quick. The cave was on the point of collapsing.

He would cringe at the freezing chill of the water, but at the same time urge himself onward, knowing if he didn’t it would mean death. Upon opening his eyes, he saw it was near pitch-black and very difficult to make out much of anything. However, no matter what, he would maintain the same pace — moving as fast as his arms and legs would allow. It grew tough as the tunnel began to get tighter and tighter, and, at times, he actually believed there’d be a dead end. The fact that he was running out of breath didn’t help either; but regardless, he carried on.

The sound of more rocks falling would send him into a panic, forcing him to work even harder than his body would allow. Just as the young boy thought it was over, he distinguished what looked to be an opening. Rushing up to it, he’d gasp at the taste and smell of air. Stepping back into reality, it caught his attention that the cave around him was making a sound as if it was going to collapse. shit, i still can..!! He’d heave himself through the corridor until it split into three separate ones; his Byakugan was activated, but couldn’t see the ending of any of them. He didn’t have a lot of time to think, but decided heading toward the one with a bit of plant and animal life would be the smartest choice. He wasn’t able to run at a full sprint quite yet, but tried his hardest to run in that direction, in an attempt to make his way out of this hellhole.
