The door to the small, stuffy classroom opened with a loud thud. The handle slammed against the wall that connected to the hinges. Asa thought he had nearly put a hole in the plaster near a large section where the formerly neat paint had chipped away. The academy had been pristine when he attended here what seemed like ages ago. The recent troubles had left the building in shambles with nobody available to cleanse its lingering aesthetic problems. It was still standing, and that’s all that was important.
Asa gazed out over the few students left, sitting in the rows of long benches, their legs obscured by the tables in front of them. There were far fewer then there should have been. Obviously the troubles didn’t differentiate between the young and old. It was an unfortunate truth that had made an impact on the faces of the students in the class. Most of them seemed pretty sullen. Their faces down cast at the tables in front of them sleepily. At least at first glance they seemed sleepy. He assumed it was more quiet thought. An attempt to get themselves back to a happier frame of mind that just didn’t seem to work.
Asa’s entrance had roused them a bit, but they seemed to not care who the new person in the room was. His flowing robes masked the size of his body, and his seemingly unkempt hair spoke of immaturity and laziness. They probably thought there was no way that someone like this was their substitute. They were wrong.
Asa moved to the front of the class, and immediately all eyes were on him as he dragged his nails across the black board producing a terrible screech. The children held their ears, and some yelled obscenities to harsh for their young mouths. Asa took note of the ones who did. He smiled now that he had their attention though. All eyes on him, time to get them into shape.
