Entering the house, Asa smiled as the couple met him at the door. He had not waited for them to open the door and he assumed they wouldn’t enjoy his uninvited presence, but they seemed to happy to be having a night off to care who was watching their baby. The couple was recently married, and recently had their baby. The work of rebuilding the world and raising a child had simply put them over their tipping point. A few of their friends had hired the village to provide them with a needed break.
The house was simply a hovel compared to their previous one. Few people had had a moment to rebuild their houses. The single room would make Asa’s job all the easier. It wasn’t dirty parse, but the earthen floor made it so dust kicked up with every step. It was probably a nightmare for a new mother. The parents introduced Asa to his ward. It was a little 6 month old baby boy named Tamoze. The pot bellied baby with a snub nose and a look in his eyes as if he was the most innocent angel there could be. The parents gave him the measurements for formula and told him about Tamoze’s schedule. Then they were off.
Asa waved them goodbye with a smile then closed the door. He looked at the crib across the shanty and Tamoze seemed to be asleep. “Ahh, the life of an oblivious baby. If only we all were so lucky.” Smiling, Asa settled down in one of the few chairs in the room. It was a somewhat uncomfortable, wooden one with a straight, ladder back. After looking at the other chair candidates, he figured none would be any better and worked himself into the best position he could. Then he pulled out a kunai and began cleaning the dirt from beneath his nails.
