The Kazekage was visibly perturbed by the council member’s statement, incapable of understanding how they could say such venomous words about their Kage. Even if the Hidden Sand’s council disagreed with his choices and decisions, they would never, under any circumstance, berate and demean their leader in such a manner. It was apparent then that the Hidden Stone suffered not from foreign turmoil, but rather, internal discord that would soon render them in twain.
However, even this could be resolved in time.
When the chamber erupted into chaos, and neighbors turned their skills and weapons upon each other, the Kazekage merely took up his village scroll and secured it at his hip once more. As the battle raged, he and his entourage remained still—statues cast into the depths of a violent, dangerous thunderstorm of loyalties. He’d seen the Tsuchikage slip free from it all just moments after a small explosion, and while things had taken a rather unexpected turn, their mission was clear.
“Kazekage-sama,” Maime whispered. Her voice was barely audible in the roar of the battle. “We should escort you to a safer location.”
“Iwagakure has accepted our proposal,” he replied. “We will stay here and finish our discussion.”
“My lord—”
“We may not get another chance at this,” Kouketsu interrupted Odama. “Besides, there’s the matter of the Tsuchikage to discuss with the council. My arrangement was made with Lady Mitzy, and should she be usurped, her successor may not share the same views. I do not wish to hand over such sensitive information to a man or woman that, in the next breath, may use it against us.”
“You trust her?” Gennosuke inquired.
“As much as new acquaintances can, yes,” he admitted. “She… reminds me of someone. Either way, the treaty takes precedence. We’ll solidify our terms with Iwagakure and then find the Lady Tsuchikage.”
Odama gasped. “Lord Kazekage, you can’t mean to…”
“I do.” Kouketsu glanced over his shoulder. “Is that a problem?”
“No, Kazekage-sama,” the three whispered together.
With his orders given, Kouketsu looked toward the well-protected council, watching as order was slowly restored to the chamber. Nary a hair on their guests had been disturbed, and when all had been settled, it seemed as though the Kazekage was prepared to continue as if nothing had occurred. However, there was no doubt that this—outburst—had shown more of Iwagakure’s instability than any of their ninja would have desired. “I am pleased that you have decided to accept our terms, and hope the Nidaime Tsuchikage shall honor this arrangement.”
