The moon was out.
Kouketsu tucked both arms behind his head as he lay upon a bed of rice plants, staring at a legion of stars and their pale queen. He remembered a time, with tender fondness, when he could see past them—deep into the endless void, through time and space itself; a time when he wielded the eyes of a Creator. Now? Well, once more he stood as a man at the precipice of something amazing. How much had he sacrificed to become the entity he once was? Could he bring himself to do it again?
“Kazekage-sama,” a young voice said, breaking the Uchiha from his thoughts. “Are you all right?”
Kouketsu closed his eyes. “I’m fine. Why?”
“You’ve been lying down for quite some time.”
“There’s no telling with the Tsuchikage’s convoy will arrive,” he replied. “What is the point in standing around waiting for them?”
“Isn’t it… proper?” a second voice asked. “You are the Kazekage, after all.”
For being the council’s chosen representatives, the trio of shinobi—one woman, two men—seemed rather wet behind the ears. Then again, what did they know outside the vigorous lifestyle of a Hidden Sand shinobi? They hadn’t seen what their leader had and did not know all that he knew. “It’s fine,” he finally said with a heavy, drawn out sigh. “If the Hidden Stone would go so far as to judge a neighboring Kage simply because he decided to enjoy a beautiful view, well, then I suppose they aren’t the open-minded nation I’ve taken them to be.”
“Lord Kazekage,” the young woman chirped. “They’re here.”
Kouketsu’s eyes half-opened at the news, but still he did not move. I at least owe them this, he mused as he gazed at the full moon once again. Then I can leave this place. Slate eyes darkened at the thought, and for that moment, he could see them perfectly. It wouldn’t be too much longer.
