So this is what it means to live...
Parents, gone. Elders, gone. The compound had been rebuilt - not as grand as it used to be, she had been told - and the village was remolded and sculpted with the hands of hundred of civilians, hands that toiled day and night to rebuild her home. The newness of the village was a glaring scar against her soul - a constant reminder of mass weakness and gut-wrenching hearthache.
The world continued to turn, but her family would never return. Anger became her defense agains sadness, and power became the ultimate goal. Never again would she know such fear, never again would she know such sadness... all it took was a moment of silence and the memories came rushing back - bleeding bodies and tortured screams, utter destruction, at every corner...
I must become great. Greater than any before me, sworn on the blood flowing through my veins.
Her back itched from the bark scratching against it through her tank top, and the grass tickled her bare ankles. The air tasted of sun, with a hint of salt -
Ugh, sweat.
- but there was no wind to buffer the heat. A pleasant day, all in all, but one that she could not enjoy.
"Hakke Shouhen." The words left her lips as a soft breeze kisses a leaf, so soft as to be silent. They had been the last words of her father, before death claimed him. Hakke Shouhen.
She hopped to her feet in one smooth motion, her youthful frame lithe and limber, and began to slowly walk back into the compound.
