SPARRING WITH THE NEWBIES

DESCRIPTION: In order to keep interest in those who have passed the academy test and who have become genin, for those few who seem to be uninspired by shinobi life and are slowly becoming lethargic, the council has asked for seasoned shinobi to spar with these bored individuals, and to try and convince them how interesting and exciting a life of a shinobi truly can be. As these are usually less-than enthusastic kids, don't be too hard on them, but at the same time, you need to display to them the might that can be gathered if you train enough, as you have done. By delivering them inspiring words and whooping their asses, perhaps you can teach them that there's more to shinobi life than just wearing a band and helping people out.
OBJECTIVE: Spar with and inspire a bored, freshly-promoted genin!
PAY: 200 EXP and 1,000 Ryo.

It was around the early afternoon, when Ujiyasu made his way to the training grounds, where he was told there were some Genin who needed some inspiration. Given that he was a Genin for a while himself, he knew how... restricting it could be.. Wanting to climb the ladder, only for that climb to be long and arduous.

With luck he could convince them to keep at it.

The wild-dirty blond hair wavered in the breeze as he walked to the clearing with some dummies scattered around. He saw two Genin sitting down, one looked quite muscular and had black hair, the other possessed an average build with brown hair. Both of them looked pretty disillusioned.

"I guess you two are the Genin we're here to work with."

The two looked up and gave the tall Chuunin who drew near to them with a sort of uninterested look.

"I guess. Not really sure why you're bothering. It's just... boring! Constantly held back, doing trivial missions, nothing to really do that could excite us. Learning skills that we aren't even using. Uggh... it's just... pointless."

They were sentiments he himself had thought of on more than one occasion... at least until the Chuunin Exams arrived. After that, he knew he was woefully inadequate in ability, and worked hard to improve himself.

"I see... well I became a Chuunin recently, so I know those frustrations fairly well. Being held back as a Genin is a pain... but myself and Kasumi will show you that keeping at it is the only way to succeed."

"I reckon we could beat half the Chuunin here without even trying... it's just they don't want us to push forward."

Those words sparked a bit of pride within Ujiyasu, who decided then and there, that he would show them just how wrong they are.

"Well then... I guess you better beat me then won't you? Because if Kasumi and I defeat you, I will talk to the Council and demote you both as Academy Students." The looks on their faces seemed to have lit up some fire as they reeled from his threat. "Consider it me upping the stakes for your trash talking the shinobi of Kusagakure."

Ujiyasu positioned himself into a right back guard stance, and bent his knees slightly.

"And to make it more interesting, I won't use any weapons or tools. Just my bare hands and my chakra. Shouldn't be a problem for you two savants... right?"

Ujiyasu wasn't about to let two punk-ass Genin disregard all of the Shinobi who have worked hard to get where they were at, and he would show them. He knew Kasumi would show them as well... after all, this is their mission anyway.

As a Genin that was fresh to the field, Kasumi had a feeling that she'd be able to really help out the newly graduated Genin. She knew all too well that things were slow and boring at the start, but she also knew that there was a rhyme and reason for it. Genin, no matter how talented or how skilled, were virtually alone. Though all of a person's fellow village shinobi are considered allies and comrades, Genin were new and they had few people that they could actually trust. As a beginning shinobi, there isn't much that one can do. Missions were, for the most part, Community Service, and very few available missions had any type of action. Their current mission was an example of one of the ones that did. She had taken one or two before, but for the most part, her missions had been very laid back.

As she arrived at the training field that afternoon, it appeared that Ujiyasu and the two kids had already arrived. Ujiyasu seemed rather tense to the kunoichi, and considering these were just a couple of Genin and the mission was ranked at C, it struck her as odd. As she came to stand beside him, she managed to catch the last bit of what he had said. "Savants?" she asked, looking over at the two boys that seemed to be taking the situation less than seriously. "You're kidding, right?" she asked, her arms crossed over her chest. To her, they looked like two less than skilled brats.

"Psh, a girl wouldn't know a talented ninja if one patted her on the ass and told her so," the darker haired Genin said. "Yea, I can't believe they thought a kunoichi would be able to show us anything. What a joke!" the brown haired one chimed in. "Why don't you just go back to the Atrium and see if they have a flower arranging mission or something. I bet you'd be good at that, since they had a class like that at the Academy for the girls that thought they had what it took to be shinobi." After they each made their thoughts and opinions of Kasumi obvious, they went back to looking at Ujiyasu, sizing him up and visually showing their disapproval. Kasumi glanced at Ujiyasu with bewilderment, but that soon turned to a quietly simmering rage.

"I bet I could take the both of you on with my eyes closed," she said, surveying the field that surrounded them. The land was mostly flat, save for a few bushes and rocks scattered about the outside of the field, and the trees that surrounded the clearing. "Don't worry, we won't do it like that. I'm sure you'd much rather fight a Chuunin that you think is worthless than a girl who would probably just throw some flower petals on you. Am I right?" she said, her arms falling from her chest and her fingers interlocking. With a forceful push, each bone in either hand cracked and snapped, a sound similar to thunder traveling outward from the source. "If you'd like, I'll close my eyes anyway, no matter which one of you wants to take me on," she added.

She took several steps to distance herself from Ujiyasu, knowing that they each had their own fights ahead of them, and let her arms rest by her sides. A slight tilt of her head to either side loosened her neck, and a shake of her arms and legs limbered her up as much as she needed. She stared ahead at the two males, disgust rising in her stomach. The one with the darker hair rose in a less than enthusiastic manner and walked over to stand opposite her, a bored looked on his face. "Don't worry baby, I'll try not to ugly up that face too much. It'd be a shame for you to leave with less than you already have."

Kasumi arrived and the two Genin started taunting her as well, which actually began to anger him a lot more than when the two disrespected the shinobi of Kusagakure. He surprised himself that he began to feel this heated, but he figured it was the fact that Kasumi was his charge. That and they had spent some time together and he considered her as a friend at least.

Seeing the larger Genin move to take on Kasumi he grunted, hiding a dismissive laugh. I bet he reackons he's going to get a free ride and say he's tough. One of those kinds of people. Hope you teach him not to make that mistake Kasumi.

Ujiyasu turned to the brown-haired, leaner and less built kid who was smirking at him. Ujiyasu quickly performed a string of handseals, creating a clone of water from the nearby water stream, something that allowed Suiton users to train their jutsu. With another string of handseals, Ujiyasu formed another clone, this time from ice.

"Clones? Man you're too easy. Clones can't do shit."

The boy threw some kunai with exploding tags, clearly taking advantage of the handicap Ujiyasu gave, The two clones ran ahead and nimbly avoided the kunai, while they both made seals of their own. Once they completed their seals, the water clone blew a large stream of bubbles at the kid, about a dozen or so. Meanwhile the ice clone made ten swallows out of ice and snow around him, and launched them like shuriken. The bubbles popped from the impact of the swallows, which detonated them all like a cluster of exploding tags going off.

"Suckers!"

The kid was in the air, which caught Ujiyasu's attention from the kunai that headed for him. The trio of kunai slammed into his sternum, which knocked Ujiyasu back a bit, visibly reeling from the impact. There would be moments before those tags would explode.

"Wow... that was too easy. Guess I just got rid of one useless Chuunin after all!"

As Ujiyasu began to handle his own battle, so too did Kasumi, paying little attention to what was going on with her team leader and his opponent. Instead, she stared down at the boy who had chosen to step up and take on the worthless kunoichi, a small grin forming on her lips. "Guess that says a lot about you, doesn't it?" she asked, not beginning just yet. She thought she might rile him up and provoke him into attacking first. Within a minute of meeting him, she had had him pegged. "What?" he questioned, his hand reaching for a weapon. "You chose to fight the weak girl rather than the Chuunin. It says a lot about how cowardly you are," she explained nonchalantly, shrugging her shoulders as if she thought what she had said should have been obvious.

"I'll show you cowardly!" he exclaimed, launching upward and releasing a single kunai with a paper bomb attached, much like his friend had done. As if at the speed of light, Kasumi had drawn a single shuriken from one of the pouches on her back and sent it forward to meet the kunai, intercepting it and causing it to fall where it had made contact with her weapon. It fell to the ground at just the right time and distance to send the dark haired Genin reeling back onto his ass, kicking dirt and grass all over his body. "You might wanna be a little less obvious with your assaults, especially at the beginning of the battle," she suggested, forming hand seals quickly. Rather impressively, she exhaled a mist of Chakra forged nails aimed directly at the boy, still somewhat stunned from the explosion. In the nick of time, he managed to launch himself to the side, avoiding a majority of the projectiles, but not all.

As he lay on the ground, attempting to push himself up to his feet, his face flushed and he looked at her angrily. "Y-You said you were gonna close your eyes!" he yelled, attempting to form hand seals. "I said I could," she clarified, her grin growing as he failed his hand seals. "You never told me you wanted me to." As she finished speaking, he finally finished his set of hand seals and conjured a group of duplicates that looked just like him. "Clones, eh?" she asked with a mischievous tone. "Sorry, but those won't be much help against me," she said, bringing her hands together to form a single hand seal as she closed her eyes and opened her Mind's Eye.

Instantly, she was able to determine the location of the real Genin, and tell which of the others were simply illusions. She decided to humor him though, and see what he would do after hearing what she previously said. "Go on, take your best shot," she called to him, her hands falling to her sides. "I closed my eyes, so let's see how this goes. Either you land a hit on me, or I'll land a real hit on you!" Her emotions had begun to get the best of her, and she knew she was simply toying with the kid. The words he and his friends and said continued to ring in her ears though, and the repetition took away any and all sorrow or mercy she might usually feel for the actions she was performing. She didn't care about inspiring or motivating, she wanted to teach them a lesson they would never forget. The only break she was cutting them was her resolve to hold back her most powerful techniques, and that was really only because they were kids, and they were Kusa shinobi.

While Ujiyasu was knocked back from the impact of the three kunai, the tags detonated... but just moments before the explosions, smoke seemed to billow from Ujiyasu before the tags finished obscuring the area.

The younger Genin found himself laughing hard at what looked like a quick victory, only to feel a rather strong palm press onto his back.

"WHAT?!"

Immediately after, the boy turned to try and hit Ujiyasu, who had leaped up to get close after performing some handseals. Thanks to the elementary Kawarimi no Jutsu, he was given a fair bit of time to counter-attack. Now that the boy turned, Ujiyasu drove a knee that would have slammed into the face, but as the Genin blocked it, Ujiyasu already lauched a vicious kick to the chest, the initial knee being a feint.

As the two began to fall to the ground from the force of the attack, Ujiyasu rotated and brought his leg down with considerable force. While he could have taken this much further, he chose not to: they were Kusa Shinobi after all. Ujiyasu stood up after the assault and dusted himself off.

"Unbelievable... so easily caught out by an Academy jutsu. Pretty sure a genius wouldn't have fallen for the old Substitution Jutsu, especially when I was being quite blatant with its use."

The kid was fuming: he thought the Chuunin would go down quickly, but instead, he just got shown up... and now he was being taunted at. Enraged, the fair-haired Genin got back to his feet and tried to lunge at Ujiyasu, only for his body to suddenly lock up on him. Black lines extended from the area on the back where Ujiyasu initially placed a palm on him.

"There we go... Strength Thief Seal. That little tap I gave you before I hit you with the Lion's Combo was a sealing jutsu I've begun to use... especially for cases like you. There's no point bothering to move... the seal locks your body's muscles but keeps you alive."

At this, the ice clone and the water clone walked up to the fallen Genin and folded their arms.

"You know... if you were my enemy, you would likely be dead by now. Or at the very least unconscious while I hauled you off to Kusa to determine your fate. That's what we shinobi do. We make sure that threats are kept in check by whatever means necessary. Including upstart Genin who feel they're better than the rest."

Ujiyasu jerked his thumb to where Kasumi was handling the larger Genin and grinned.

"And your friend here's getting a taste of what a Genin can do when they've got the will to continue, train and protect what they care about. I would say she'd be well on her way to becoming a Chuunin. While you and your friend will never climb that ladder, because you felt you deserved things to be handed to you."

The Genin's eyes widened as he watched his friend, helpless from the Fuuinjutsu Ujiyasu put on him. To make sure, both the Water and Ice clones planted a foot on his back, to pin the boy down. Ujiyasu waved at the two of them and called out to them.

"Well that's one down! Pretty sure the Kunoichi there'll beat you hard kid! Show them what you can do Kasumi!"

He was very confident in Kasumi's ability, that and he knew right there that she could trounce this upstart. He just knew somehow that she could. And it wasn't just because he was teaching her. He really believed in her, much like he believed in her with the Chuunin Exams, whenever she decided to take them up.

Not only were the boy and his clones incredibly well known to the "blinded" kunoichi, but so was the situation with Ujiyasu and the brown haired Genin. For a second, she had actually thought that the explosion had taken him out, but sure enough, it was just a minor lapse in her faith. It seemed to take the Chuunin only seconds to take his opponent down and out. For her, it might take a bit longer, but she wouldn't be very far behind him. After all, the careless dark haired Genin had begun his assault much too quickly to have been able to plan anything. The entire swarm of illusions as well as the real one began to charge her. With the clones at the front and the real one in the back, Kasumi didn't need to do very much.

While the boy carried out his plan, if it could even be called one, Kasumi stood still with her arms crossed. She heard her opponent snicker, but the grass that crunched underneath his feet was much louder. "You can't even see me! Go on and open your eyes or you're gonna get demolished!" he called out. With a shrug, Kasumi ended her technique and opened her eyes, witnessing a minor tremor of fear on the boys face as she did. "Careful what you wish for," she said, continuing to stand motionless. Soon enough, the clones were upon her and the boy began to speed up, likely hoping to surprise her as she guarded against the clones. However, she didn't waste her time guarding against them, because she knew they were illusions. As the boy leaped into the air and began to came down, his face shifted from that of someone who was victorious, to that of someone who was afraid. As he lost the resolve to attack, it was too soon to turn back. He shut his eyes...

And with a quick, fluid motion, Kasumi spun and extended her leg, meeting his head with her foot at full force. The Genin went flying backwards and Kasumi came to stand comfortably on her two feet, her arms crossing gently over her chest. The boy tumbled backwards, like a rock skidding over water, until he was finally caught by a tree trunk. After waiting a minute, Kasumi decided that he must be unconscious or simply too battered to get up. A small smile crossed her lips only momentarily, and a heavy sigh shuddered out of her, relieved that she could finally bask in her victory.

"Can we go now? I think we're done here," she said. She looked from her defeated opponent to Ujiyasu's and shook her head. "Maybe we should stop by the hospital and tell them what we left here. I can't really be bothered to carry such lowlifes," she continued, walking over towards where Ujiyasu was, her strange brew of emotions almost completely forgotten in the heat of the moment. With each step she took toward him though, they bubbled back to the surface, and soon enough she was quiet and small once more. "What do you say?"

Watching Kasumi dispose of her opponent with ease made him feel a lot happier, as well as being proud of her. Knowing that the two Genin won't be much of a threat, the clones dispersed as Ujiyasu began to walk to his student, and friend. With a casual backward glance, he spoke to the kid.

"That seal will end soon, but I wouldn't bother trying another attack. The next one you do will cost you your ability to mold Chakra properly until another sealist is kind enough to undo it for you... and when I'm through, I doubt any would be overly keen to do it for you.

Tend to your friend, then try harder to become better than you are now, otherwise you'll both be stuck as Genin... and rightly so. There's no need to convince the Council to demote you both to Students... I think this defeat would sting bad enough for you two as it is."

As Kasumi walked toward him, he could help but feel real excited and giddy. Just being around her made him feel like he could do a lot more.

"Yeah, I think we got those two more motivated to train harder... once they're up and about again. That and I think their leader would handle the medical side of things. He's the one who put up this mission in the first place. Can see why he wanted other people to beat some sense into those two. Just being trounced by one person wouldn't be enough... but some random as well as their leader thumping them would send a message for sure. We'll meet up with him and get this mission finalized."

Seeing her start to become a little quieter, he couldn't help but feel surprised... normally she'd be pretty opinionated, flirty and generally more... outgoing. This was a side of her he never really figured she'd show. The thought made him smile quite a bit at her.

"After this next mission, want to grab a bit to eat? My shout."

He figured she'd want some food, so he thought about treating her to something at least. As her mentor and her friend... though he'd begun to think of her differently. It wasn't straight up obvious to himself, but he began to see her in a much more different light.

He then turned to leave the training ground, with the seal on the Genin wearing off, so that he could move again to check up on his friend.

"If it were up to me, I'd just bar you too worthless boys from being shinobi at all, especially because of the attitude that you showed to two people that you're supposed to think of as comrades and allies. Guess it's your lucky day though, because it's not up to me," she said, flashing a small grin back at them. "Not today, anyway." As she started to walk away and head to start the next mission, Ujiyasu's invitation caught her attention and threw who for a little bit of a loop.

"Um..." she sounded out, unsure of what to do. She knew that there was something going on, involving the two of them on a level that was separate from the professional, leader-subordinate bond that they were designated to have. It dawned on her that if she was going to figure things out and sort out the thoughts and feelings that plagues her head and her heart, she was going to need to sit down with Ujiyasu in a non-mission setting and tackle them head on. With a brief nod and a small smile but promising smile, Kasumi accepted his invitation before continuing to walk.
