Chuunin Exams, the Side Lines

Everything was thus far enjoyable from Lightning's standpoint. The setting was amazing, the food was great, and the weather wasn't too bad to boot. However after a certain point, she seemed to feel as though something was lacking. Was it the adrenaline of being inches from injury? Or was it simply that everything seemed to be going according to plan? Whatever it was, she pushed the feeling from her mind and continued being happy just to be around.

The little work she had expected to do today was pointless since there wasn't a good enough view of the handseals from up here to copy any jutsu. Not that she had enough chakra to copy very many anyways since she had made so many shadow clones.

After some time had passed, one of her shadow clones dispersed, having seen the Hokage make her way to the kage box. Knowing she was coming, the nearest clone walked by her and got the impression that it was to keep an eye on the box. Since every other clone was still watching the two of them, they got the gist of what was going on. They too would keep a close eye on that particular area.

In compliance with orders, the clone would take the vacated seat of a man who had recently left for whatever reason. She would probably be able to sit around for ten minutes or so before the guy got back. In the meantime, she would lean forwards and rest her elbows on her knees. She kept the box in her peripheral vision and was ready to bust out a chidori at a moment's notice.

Not that she expected anything to happen. Their only acknowledged threat was the stone village and everybody knew it was full of chumps.

There was no allowing even second guesses as to who he was, and as I now stood close to him, gazing up at his face, I couldn't help but allow my face to gain the same cheeky smirk that he'd have become accustom to - one much different to the maddened, bloodthirsty version that I'd shown to him the night of the rabid scramble between villages for the Sanbi. It was strange how time passed and different things occured to shape us, but then again, I wouldn't have changed anything that I had now for the world. Even with my own brief uncertainties about the outcome of bringing such a child to the world both on myself and the village, I basked in nothing but love, and despite the weary expression on my face and the lumbering action that merely moving had become, and I waited patiently. Listening in as he began to speak, I was quite intruiged to hear that Kirigakure, too, only had a single shinobi participating. From the number of people on the monitors it didn't seem as if many people had taken part at all from each village, but the outcome seemed much more than that of the previous year, wherein my own Ujiyasu was the only person to arrive, and henceforth, the only person to receive the title of chuunin. The name was familiar to such information he'd revealed to me a short while ago, and I nodded my head, no sign of irritation or distaste apparent in my expression - although, I was interested in seeing him in the flesh for who he was. All I'd heard was words, nothing more. "..I see. It seems as if yourself and I are in the same boat then." I commented with the same grin plastered on my face as he spoke of the only competitor that kirigakure had put forth for the games. "My best wishes for your shinobi; not only for these exams, but those of the future, too." ever since my spontaneous meeting with him a short while ago, things between us had become much more laid back. Having once been pure shinobi; driving on the instinct of a killer at the shores of Mizu no Kuni, the relationship between the both of us had since changed, and although not exactly exceedingly close, I found myself much more relaxed in his presence. Not to say that I'd been scared of him; but I'd always felt.. challenged by him - although it was surely something to do with his towering height and reputation as the leader of a once bloodthirsty nation.

And then, the very moment that he drew close, I felt it before even needing to see the gliding motion of his robes as he neared - the surge of chakra that I felt pumping through his body --- it was, to say the least, horrendously addictive, although I'd promised myself to prevent any more slip-ups. However, focusing on what he had to say, such information obviously going to be somewhat secretive given the fact that he'd come so close, I allowed my eyes to fix upon the wall behind him. Whilst I had initially been unsure of what he was to tell me, upon revealing it, the inquisitive look that my expression had gained soon shifted, turning in to something much more different - a genuine smile, and one nothing less than appreciative, too. With a soft bow of my head, I too whispered; "..Thank you." to him in an equally quiet manner. With the chuunin exams being known for its disruptions, I wasn't sure whether or not anything was to occur this time, but, even with the aid of Ujiyasu if things were to take the turn for a worst, it was reassuring to know that I too had Akira watching out for me. Given that my balance wasn't at its best these days and I was less than capable of composing myself for a fight, or to defend myself with great ability (And of course, the fact that I'd done my best to avoid using chakra, for the sake of not disrupting the delicately broken flow in my body at the moment - nor provoking the undying thirst for it, too) it was something that I truly appreciate, and it was clear on my face.

"And next time-- let me come to your seat, hn? You shouldn't be walking so much."

A grin.



"..Akira - whilst I appreciate your concern, I walked here from Kusagakure."
"..And have every intention to walk back, too."

It had been a long, tiring journey and even with a night of rest, I was still tired, and despite the truth behind my words, I spoke them playfully to him as I batted away his comforting hand, entertained somewhat by just how much he was fussing over me.

Moving my free hand and pressing it against my lower back, I allowed it to stay there for a moment or so, before withdrawing it back to my side.

"I'll be fine."

I smiled, merely to reassure him.

However - my attention was drawn once more not to the figure that had emerged from the doorway of the skybox, but the overall atmosphere of the room. It had changed, and I knew exactly why. With my ability to feel chakra in the air somewhat more intense than it had previously been, I could tell that another jinchuurkiki had entered the room - whilst much less potent than Akira's own signal, it was quite impressive, and just as delectable to merely be around. With so much varying power radiating in the air becoming painful for my head to bear, I could feel myself slipping temporarily in a blinded haze as my body started to feel weightless. "...!!" Had it not been for my hand that shout out for the pillar, I figured as much that I might have fallen, and it was now that I regretted telling Akira those simple three words, although I expected just as much for him to react in some way to this sudden action on my part. But regardless, - I turned to look at whom it had been to enter - Instinctively my mind had assumed that it was Eiichro - but given the news of his death and the female form that now approached both myself and the Mizukage, I couldn't say that I'd been expecting that.

..Kohana?

I didn't quite understand - but then again, it had been a long while since I'd seen her last, so anything could have happened - clearly, she'd been possessed by a bijuu, but, I hadn't the understanding of which one it was exactly. I could simply taste its aura like some kind of addictive drug upon the air of the skybox, relentless in its attack on my senses. However - with my hand still positioned on the pillar that helped to support me, the dizzy spell I'd suffered from soon passed, allowing me to remove it, and allowing it to hang back to my side. In the meantime, I turned my attention from the giant, back towards the hyuuga who had entered, her soft milky eyes directed towards both myself and Akira.

"..If anything, thank you for opening up your village for these exams."

"..I have hope that these will run smoother than the ones in the past."

Ujiyasu turned to the screens as the Mizukage and the Kusakage talked, however he was concerned with Blanche's well-being. She did exert herself getting here and most would have understood if she decided to skip these exams... she was expecting at any time, and it was usually when most would opt to keep a medic or a hospital a stone's throw away so that things would go smoothly. Granted, Blanche is a medic herself, but at present she would be the patient and while Ujiyasu was no expert, he had heard about how... painful that process could be, and how the women who give birth likely wouldn't think clearly. Given that being a medic requires control as well as clarity, she would be unable to really help herself when the baby comes.

He watched Kasumi in her fight, and found himself a bit anxious. This was the first time in a while that she was off on her own, and he knew that the Chuunin Exams could be utterly brutal. He never liked the idea of young people fighting with each other just to see who would be Chuunin, but he did know that at least with a more structure bracket, the fatality risk would be less. While it is true that a shinobi should be prepared to die at any time, he felt that it was needless to kill Genin, or have them die. He himself knew exactly what being brought to the brink of death felt like, and he will never forget that experience. It's what changed him after all, but now it was Kasumi who had begun to change him, hell perhaps it was the fact that he was taking care of Genin that changed him as well. He found himself more... relaxed than before. Granted, he was still quite focused, but he felt he could be a bit more of his old self, if only around Kasumi at least.

He heard the two Kage talk for a bit more, hearing that Kirigakure also brought one Genin into the Exams, before he heard footsteps that originated further from where the two Kage were currently. Instinctively, Ujiyasu turned to the source and saw yet another familiar sight: it was the woman who he saw become Jinchuuriki during his trek through Kaze no Kuni. It had been quite an ordeal, and it was his first encounter with a Bijuu, the Yonbi notwithstanding as he was too young, that and his parents fled along with Ujiyasu. Through the experience, he learned a fair bit about the might of a few villages, the art of Fuuinjutsu and about himself. He knew he needed to drastically improve himself to even reach the lofty heights the other villages had attained. He knew that some day, he would become a Jinchuuriki as well, to help keep the Bijuu from annihilating wherever they set foot upon... and to further help secure peace.

The outfit she wore was what he remembered back in Suna, but her hat told him she was Kage as well, which he had to have figured, given how the shinobi seemed to have treated her in a similar fashion to the Mizukage back in Suna. The red colouring denoted fire as did the character that adorned it, which meant one thing: she was the Hokage.

Ujiyasu bowed back to her as she nodded in a polite greeting, before her attention turned to the other Kage. Ujiyasu turned to the other two as well in time to notice that Blanche seemed to look a bit woozy. By the time he reached her position, she seemed to have regained her bearings, which was good news. Nonetheless, he lowered his voice so only she could hear, despite the Mizukage's proximity.

"I know you're not fond of being told to relax... but I feel that you should take a seat at least Lady Kusakage."

He had heard and seen Lady Kusakage work despite any illness she had or whatever condition she was in, and this was something he knew would affect her adversely one day. Right now there was no need to exert herself, so he hoped that she would at least consider taking a seat so that if she had any more dizzy spells, she wouldn't be in any significant danger.

"You can't blame me for being a gentleman," I teased with a laugh, retreating several steps from her to give some space. "But, you're right. I'm sure that any woman is still around after having a fight with me can handle walking around while pregnant," I went on to explain, remembering our confrontation like it was yesterday. Even as I looked at her now, I was still utterly impressed she was even alive. While I did not unleash everything that I could, the fact she'd seen the majority of my power and-- it was just incredible, period.

I was in the middle of turning around, and stepping off to the side, when a familiar voice rang out over the cheers and sounds of the battles below. Adjusting my half-pivot a little further, Kohana's form came into view. I could only see her through one eye, as my other was covered with bandages, but it was more than enough. "If you'll excuse me, Blanche."

It only took several steps to clear the distance between us, and with a larger than normal hand I hooked several fingers in the strep of her flak-jacket, pulling her closer. "You know I don't mind informality, pussycat," I whispered while leaning down, using my other hand to lift the face-cowl and ease her into a very deep, passionate kiss. I stayed there for several long moments, feeling as though it'd been forever since we'd done this -- just embraced each other, like a normal couple. Reluctantly pulling away, I lingered close, so that she could feel the breath of my words rolling along her skin.

"I'll be staying in Konohagakure for a few days, after the exams are finished," I continued to whisper in her ear. "I take it you won't mind if I spend the night with you, hm?" My gaze fell below her bust line, aimed for the seal along her abdomens. "I hope you won' mind either, kitten."

I knew the Nibi could hear me, and I couldn't help but chuckle as I released Kohana's flak jacket and stepped back. But, that same hand then came to her own, taking it in the deep crescent of my palm. Intertwining our fingers, I held her firmly -- carefully. Who cares about appearances? Half the world already knew about us, anyway. We were people, as well. And even though my history with Konohagakure was. . . well, somewhat shaky (since the Second War), I had nothing to fear. "How have things been? Are you adjusting alright?"

While my attention (visually) was elsewhere, I hadn’t gone blind-sided to the man who sat beside me. The preliminary match-ups had been all to fascinating to simply spark conversation at the moment, and as meek as I based my character on genuineness, I was more concerned with watching the battles go on. It had been quite some time since I was involved in even participating in a competition of this caliber as I was sadly ineligible due to the title I already held at the time. In honesty, I assumed I simply watched to feed my envy; these kids who would gain the experience of the Chūnin Exams, something I would forever lack. The trials and tribulations of being a Hokage, I’d sigh in bitter sweetness.

One leg folded over another as my arms remained folded across the bright fabric of my kosode; I continued to take in everything: the breeze, the sun-drenched day, the amassing conversations and finally, the battles that transcended below for the time being. At peace and out of harm’s reach, I could enjoy this adventure, speculating alike others and analyzing the prospecting future Chūnin. My attention remained adamant as several others commissioners and employees of the stadium insisted my seat in the skybox, likewise, they would be met with a decline and while I grew somewhat chagrined with the constant inquiry, my eyes perked and senses jolted when the man beside me spoke out.

“Hmm”? My thoughts passing into reality as I continued to face forward, allowing only my eyes to move to the corners and peer at the man through my peripheral. Strange, from what I could see, he clung to his occupation and donned the attire of an Anbu Operative, yet normally they were stationed in secrecy; however, here one sat directly next to me? “Yeah, she is. And to think, I was just a boy when we first met.”. The thought alone brought a smile to soft, mature facial features as I felt a evocative tinge. Everyone (for the most part) in that skybox, I had some relation with; be it an ally, or enemy, the immensity which was my personal dealings seemed near endless.

"A boy?" I repeated, my right foot still bouncing at the edge of my left knee as I laid back in my seat. My eyes still focused on the battle before us, but my thoughts and dialogue were quite obviously elsewhere. So, Ryusuke knew Blanche, did he? I wasn't quite expecting that. But, then again, my friend had always been quite the sociable one. I had no doubt his silver-tongue had reached the ears of countless other players in the world. This nearly life-long acquaintance with the blonde, however, was intriguing. "A couple of schoolmates, I presume?"

My inquiry was issued with a light-hearted, casual tone. It was the most logical explanation I had in mind but, then again, I didn't recall Ryusuke having a past in Kusa no Kuni. But how was I to know for certain? Absorbing the details of whatever answer he'd give me, I'd tune back into the conversation with a little backstory of my own. "First time we'd met was in the War, Blanche and I." I recalled, an expression of fond remembrance hiding behind the confines of my white mask. "We didn't exactly have a... conventional encounter with one another. But Kami no Shima had a way of doing that to people back then."

I almost remembered that night like it was yesterday. Thankfully. I was surprised I remembered anything at all, on account of the skull I'd managed to fracture after our little "debate". But that had been so long ago, that the entire occurence actually brought a smile to my face. I had been such a stubborn fool back then. But I didn't regret it, no. There was, after all, a time in everyone's life for foolishness. It was how one eased themselves into maturity, and took account for their actions. Falling several stories off the rooftop of a casino, and surviving it, no less, had been one hell of a wake-up call.

As Blanche spoke Kohana had every intention to reply to her. After all their last meeting was rather abrupt and rushed. She was tired and needed to get back to Kusagakure no Sato rather quickly. Also, by the look of her belly, the two of them had plenty to talk about. However everything ceased to matter rather quickly when all she could see was Akira closing the distance between them and looming over her as such.

She loved being consumed in his shadow. It made her feel so utterly safe, hidden from the cruel things the world out there brought.

Then it came. The kiss. Kohana didn't expect it, which was clear by the widening of those empty, yet beautiful ivory eyes of hers. The Hokage hat fell behind her head, though did not fall thanks to the strap, and laid against her back while her eyes finally closed in response to Akira. Hands came up to rest against his chest, fingers sprawling out to just feel the warmth of him against her. The Hyuuga would return every ounce of passion he gave with her own.

If anything she could match him with, it was her affection for him.

When they parted, Kohana's face was red and somewhat flushed. For a moment she was almost embarrassed, or rather, sheepish to have done that in front of another Kage however his words after only drew her back in. "Uh well, yeah, that's great. Of course I don't mind at all, you know you're welcome anytime and uh, I'm sure she won't mind either I mean what could she do and...uh...I'm looking forward to spending time with you.."

Kohana had babbled on, under her breath, in a whisper just like he had done. Only Akira would at least have the satisfaction that he still had the same effect on her as always. Regardless though when they parted, even if it was brief, they still stood close. He took her hand to his and she grasped it right back. Almost naturally she would lean into him, her head on his arm (roughly above his elbow due to the height difference).

"Things have been fine," She started, voice not shaky this time, as well as louder for their other company to hear. "The Nibi and I have been getting along fine I suppose but it's still something to get used to. How about you? Hachibi, right? Not the beast I quite remember you having."

Though Akira may not have answered yet she looked to Blanche with a smile, and a truly inquisitive look in her eye. Someone like her was pregnant, but by whom? Of course she had her suspicions thanks to their last encounter and from what she knew the last Summit. But she kept those thoughts at bay for now. "I was happy to open my village for this. Especially happy to see you again Blanche. You're expecting I see. I'm extremely happy for you. To start a family is always a girls dream, no?"

She would almost giggle at that before recomposing herself. "The father is lucky---after all you're quite the woman Blanche. I do wish you well as Kusakage, wife, and mother. But I know you'll manage."

Kohana. Why must you always do this to yourself?

You remained quiet up 'till now, you have any other smart remarks?

I told you that you would stumble your words and turn red in the face.

Kohana still continued to smile to Blanche, and lean against Akira, though internally? She wished she was wringing a cat's neck.

It seemed as if I'd managed to pull off the minor slip-up I'd suffered from mistaking the true limitations of my balance, as I now stood tall, although my arms were understandably held to either side of me, to aid in any repeat event. Of course, despite the fact that I'd managed to take ahold of myself, that wasn't to say that my balance, and the feeling of lightheadedness had revoked itself in its entirety from my body, but I did better to control it than I had minutes ago. A voice soon chimed in my direction - one soft so soft, but, I couldn't help but notice it. It was Ujiyasu, and from what he was saying, he seemed to be intent on getting me to sit down, lest I surely trip over my own feet once more. Of course - with seats being a short distance away, but with myself in the audience of two other village leaders, I couldn't simply leave and demand them to follow me for my own sake. Whilst it was an idea and I was tired, I wasn't ready yet to retire myself from my current position and go to sit down to watch the games. Momentarily looking up at the screen that held the images from the current matches, I then turned back to look at the blonde chuunin to my side, a reassuring smile clearly positioned on my face.

"..Ujiyasu, I'm alright.
It'll pass."

I whispered to him in a tone similarily quiet, although it was loud enough to stress my understanding that I felt alright. But on the notion of such dizzy spells passing - They usually did - but now that the two of them, Akira and Kohana would surely stay here for a while, I wasn't too sure about what to do. With Kouketsu elsewhere at the moment I had no-one voluntarily happy to come to my aid, and so, I had to just grin and bear it for what it was. I felt uncomfortable - but it had been that way for months, now. Although Ujiyasu's words were sweet in their own way, I felt well enough to stand at the moment - but, if it happened again, I'd be sure to act on it and go with his advice. And I studied the boy for a moment with the same gentle smile upon my face. I was aware that I was taking a few risks by merely being here, but with Akira's promise and Kouketsu's own figure surely not too far away somewhere within Hi no Kuni, I wasn't too concerned. But - I could understand why Ujiyasu would be somewhat hesitant. Despite being eighteen, he was young, and I could only imagine the concerns he had in regards to taking this escort mission alone. With my careful words having been said to my chuunin to try and bring peace to him in regards to what had just happened, my eyes then turned back to Akira, of whom had answered my comment. Just a few weeks ago he'd commented unfavorably on my appearance, and now - he was surely insinuating that I was weak? Despite how fragile I felt at the moment, I wasn't up to allowing him to walk over me and treat me like some kind of bubble-wrapped doll. I knew he meant well, and despite the connection that had made between us, that didn't mean that I couldn't still become somewhat irritated by his choice of words. But - truly, it was moreso my own childishness that forced this thought in to my mind, and upon recognizing it, I quelled it considerably. "..Had I known that you were an expert on the matter then I'd have consulted you months ago, Akira." I spoke, my tone laced with sarcasm although, not in any malicious way. My eyes rolled as I spoke this. He was an intelligent man, but where it came to certain subjects not pertaining to himself, he was obviously lacking in certain information. I was more than capable of walking.

However - what discussions I was hoping to have with both the kage before me was soon placed on the shelf as Akira excused himself, only to walk over to the approaching Hokage and ------- "......" I wasn't even sure as to what I was seeing. Of course - whilst not as .. controversial as what my own relationship with Kouketsu had proved to be to those who had heard about it, it was nonetheless surprising. Having never been a fan of public displays of affection, perhaps another woman would have smiled at the sight, but - put off by it, I turned my attention away, and back towards Ujiyasu as I flicked him a slightly uncomfortable smile. My feet then began to take me across to the window that allowed full view of the crowd and the arena itself, it didn't take many paces for me to reach it, as I again spied outside the glass, both arms still held carefully to my side. Seeing as it seemed a short while since the two.. kage had seen eachother, I wasn't sure of how long they were going to be, and the last thing I wanted to be standing between was an endless source of bijuu chakra, and to have to watch them suck at each other's faces. However, a few minutes passed that I spent gazing outside, noticing someone who reminded me of somebody - blue hair, with an attitude that I could judge merely by looking at him. The name was so familiar to me - but I couldn't grasp it as time stood, the distracting qualities of the two jinchuuriki clouding over most of my current thoughts. Thankfully, however, it didn't seem too long until I was called once more by the milky-eyed Hokage, finally answering my comment about her opening up the village for the chuunin exams. Turning to look over at her, I moved closer only slightly, so that I could allow the woman to recognize that she'd captured my attention, although, I was quite relieved to see that the two of them had stopped.. interacting. With my right hand seemingly glued to my stomach, I smoothed across its surface as I listened to her speak. With the two of them having not seen me since this had happened, I assumed that they thought I was acting weird, but - despite the strain on my body from such a desperate need for chakra and from other more.. normal symptoms that came hand in hand, such a motherly disposition showed clear through my actions and merely the way that I carried myself, let alone the child.

But - despite the sure well-meaning of Kohana's words, they seemed.. off. As she giggled I struggled to hold back a slightly confused expression - this wasn't her, and it made me uneasy just how sugar-sweet her tone was, and the content of what she was saying, too. She was much like myself with a fiery temper, and it was just strange to see her acting so.. nice. Obviously, due to this, it made me wonder whether or not she was simply putting up a front given that she was in the presence of her lover. And she complimented me, too, which merely added to this assumption. Despite our villages being on good terms, due to the fact that we were similar people in personality, it made us all the more different to each other, and whilst I was more than happy to speak to her at any time and respond to her words, we weren't exactly close. "Soon - he's due within this coming week." I commented as my hand continued its gentle motion across my stomach, as if expecting him to make his own comment on the matter. But - I truly felt as if I'd reached a dead end with the entire process. There was nothing else to do now but wait - and perhaps, one thing I had learned from all this was patience. "..Although it feels as though he should have been born weeks ago." I joked - although, I was, partly, being serious. I'd since grown tired of the .. tiredness, to say the very least, and whilst I was enjoying myself in the company of those involved in the chuunin exams, a small part of me wished that I'd stayed at home within Kusagakure instead. But - I was here now, and I had faith that the exams wouldn't last too long. Pressing my free hand against the small of my back once more to help relieve what ache was linked to it, I kept my gaze fixed on the two before me as I did my best to distract our innate hunger.

"The father is lucky---after all you're quite the woman Blanche. I do wish you well as Kusakage, wife, and mother. But I know you'll manage."

I hesitated my response.
Out of those three things, a wife I was not, but I was fine with that.
However, to avoid an awkward moment, I simply nodded.

I paid her a soft smile.

"We're both elated, as I'm sure you can imagine."

My words were short and polite, but nonetheless meaningful, without giving too much away.
There was, of course, too much at stake for that.

It feels like it's been so long. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy every second of Kohana's lips against my own, and desired for nothing more as we parted ways. Even as she replied to my inquiries, my thoughts were still somewhat lost in a haze of bliss; my grip upon her was lax and comfortable, my body a pillar for her to easily rest against. As for Blanche? Well, her behavior in response to Kohana and I was quite humorous. I couldn't help but wonder how Kouketsu had managed to court such a prude, and let alone how she'd managed to maintain that train of thought when dating a lion like him. Though I wasn't too privy in the Shodaime's personal life, I remembered quite well what type of man he'd been during his days of Kirigakure. Masumi and his personal quarters-- well, it was never a dull day or night there.

I fell silent for a handful of moments, allowing Kohana to have her conversation with Blanche. As she finished, I glanced down at her. "Well, I'm glad that things are going well. That's usually the hardest part-- getting adjusted to having them inside of you," I explained with a knowing-tone. "And, yes - the Hachibi would be correct. But as for your memory, what can I say? I'm a man of many mysteries! I think I'd lose my allure if I told you all of my secrets, Kohana."

Leaning down, I whispered: "Will you be busy between breaks in the tournament rounds?"

“Not quite”. The words passed through my lips without much hesitation or hindrance as I answered the man’s inquiry. Blanche and I hailed from two different counties and our ideologies weren’t exactly bonded by equivalence; she was simply a person I had met during my first exploration of Kusa no kuni. I could still remember the day as if it were yesterday, and the varieties of smells I had encountered had almost immediately flooded my senses with a wistful odor that brought be back to the country entrenched in grass. I was a young boy, no older then fourteen at the time as I navigated seemingly unknown and new territory; my travels eventually leading to the woman who now resided within the skybox.

It was an odd occurrence, and our conversation was slim; though our ‘agreement’ had all but faded from my memory. Looking back and remember how naïve I was as a child, I already knew the promise she made to be at my side in times of troubles seemed dreadfully farfetched, and for the price of a single map (though packed with numerous locations and information). However, I hadn’t forgotten, and one of these days, I would collect on that particular favor. Though for now, it was great to just see her again and with the title of Kusakage, at that. Maybe joining the skybox to make conversation was a generous idea.

“Are you here in Konohagakure for more than just the Chūnin exams”? I’d inquire more into his stay. From his Armor alone, it was obvious he didn’t belong to our Anbu core and knowing the fact that our hidden tactical units remained—well—Hidden during such festivities, his openness and need for conversation neglected our protocols. Regardless, as cautious as I was, I was more so curious; maybe he did have an alternating motive, or simply he enjoyed the spectacle which was this day’s exams.

"The scenic view, of course." I answered in a matter-of-fact tone of speaking. "I'd gamble that Konoha has all the other villages beat in that department." I reared my head towards him, fixing my gaze in his direction with an unseen smile. After a brief pause, I continued. "Wouldn't you agree, Ryusuke?"

I hadn't tried to mask my voice then. In fact, I'd spoken his name with such a tenor that I doubted even the mask sufficed to muffle my familiar tone. Raising a single gloved hand, I removed the mask that I wore, revealing my face. Though still caught beneath the shadow of my hood, at such a close proximity, Ryusuke would be capable of seeing that it was really me. Perhaps the most distinctive feature, however, was the fact that I wasn't wearing my trademark half-mask anymore. No, instead, both of my eyes were visible now. Shades of forest green trapped within almost cat-like eyes.

"Longtime, eh?" I remarked with a cheshire cat grin. "I'd heard rumors about you, you know." My grin dropped, my face feigning seriousness with a tinge of concern. "You're not a zombie... are you?" After a beat, I'd laugh the comment away, turning my eyes back to the arena and its inhabitants. "It's nice seeing you again, old friend. Alive, no less." I continued, adjusting the tip of my hood so that the upper-half of my face sunk deeper into the shadow. "You wouldn't believe how frustrating it is staying dead. And though I'm doing it for good reasons, it gets to you whenever you need someone to talk to." I turned my gaze towards him. "You've always been trustworthy, though. And, so... I have a favor to ask."

The two foreign Kage began to make out, which prompted the boy to simply watch the monitors. Clearly it was none of his business. It seemed Blanche shared a similar sentiment as she gave an awkward smile. Ujiyasu closed his eyes and gave a slow but silent exhale before he looked at the monitors.

It was there that he saw Kasumi hesitate, before a proctor stepped in to stop the fight after the collision of jutsu that saw her get scalded. It wasn't serious, but it was more the fact that she hesitated in the face of adversity that prompted the Konoha proctor to put an end to the fight. He knew too well that being prepared mentally is one thing, but going through the experience is a completely different beast altogether. While he knew that what happened to her was nowhere near as... severe as what happened to him in his first Exams, he knew she would likely take it very hard. More so since both the Kusakage and Ujiyasu himself were watching.

When he got the chance, he knew exactly what he would do.

Looking at her opponent, Ujiyasu could see he was quite skilled, as he expected. The last exams only had Ujiyasu himself as the only contestant, so naturally there would be a fair amount of well skilled Genin looking to take that next step. That would be something he would explain to Kasumi as well. She was qualified, and she was able to hold her own, but these were Genin who had more time to hone their skills. They were hungry for the promotion, after missing their chance the last time.

These Genin, the Kages... the various Shinobi he had encountered... they all seemed to have something that allowed them to become as powerful as they are. A few even sought to enhance that power... like the Hokage and the Mizukage with their Bijuu. When he thought about how these people sought to use such powerful creatures as tools, he couldn't help but feel... confused. The bijuu were destructive, but they wound up being bound to someone... and then when freed by their captor's death, they would go on a wild rampage.

Perhaps one day, Ujiyasu may become a Jinchuuriki, and perhaps see if befriending it would be an option. Who knows... perhaps once Ujiyasu passes on, maybe the Bijuu won't be so violent. It was wishful thinking though, as he had no real power that could even compare with the multitude of shinobi across the land... the incident at Kaze no Kuni told him that as clear as day. What he did have were the ability to control, create and use ice and snow, as well as using sealing jutsu.

The best he can do for now is to make his strengths something that could surprise everyone, and work on them, along with the fundamentals. The Hyouton Release is not something that is seen, in fact most Releases like Hyouton were rare in their own right, which was what made Ujiyasu incredibly proud of Kasumi regardless. She had worked hard to tap into her potential, and now she can use her own... unique Release and make it her own, like he did with his ability to manipulate the cold.

He would speak to Blance quietly, as if to alert her to what happened.

"I guess we're done Lady Kusakage. Unfortunately Kasumi is eliminated."

He would turn slightly to her as he would ask her a question, one he wasn't sure would be feasible, but he had to ask nonetheless.

"When it's suitable, I'd like to visit Kasumi... with your permission. I have a feeling she'll take this loss hard."

"I guess we're done Lady Kusakage. Unfortunately Kasumi is eliminated."


"...!"

Having started to speak to both Kohana and Akira (Despite their display) I'd managed to overlook the TV screens around me. Of course, I'd paid them a glance and noticed a few things -- the extravagance of some technique, the sight of people running, the glint of metal, but nothing had particularly stood out given that I'd been engaged in conversation and my mind was elsewhere. But, as I could hear Ujiyasu's voice close, speaking of the news that Kasumi had lost her battle, my body instantly turned itself towards the chuunin, momentarily gazing at him as if searching for some kind of truth, before then looking over at the TV screen close by, that confirmed the news that Ujiyasu had told me. A brief pause between the time that I'd turned to look at him, and when I'd speak, such silence was soon cut across by the sound of my voice, which was as equally hushed as his own was. Towering over the boy slightly, I crossed my arms, and began to reply to his request.


"..I see."

"We'll be staying here until the exams are officially over."
"However; I doubt I'll be moving from here, so you're free to visit her now, if you'd like."

With no intention to move from the skybox that had been designated to us, I was given ample protection. And with Akira's promise, too, I felt safe enough staying here alone -- or, I wasn't alone exactly. But perhaps I would be if Akira and Kohana continued to push their tongues down eachother's throats, leaving me to my own entertainment gazing at the TV screens. Granted, given my personality, a part of me didn't really care, and knowing how close Ujiyasu and Kasumi were given their team, I was more than happy to allow him to find her in order to comfort her mind from the thoughts of failure that were surely revolving. "..If you choose to visit her; tell her that she may travel back with us once these end." Whilst I was sure that Ujiyasu was marveling at the perks one could get whilst being in a skybox, at the same time, I didn't doubt that he wanted to make sure that hist teammate was alright. Despite the fact that their relationship was based on the fact that Ujiyasu led the team that she was apart of, I'd heard, and sensed that there was something else there. However; it was none of my business, but I understood the boy's concern. It was, in a way, sweet, but I merely hoped that his words could bring her back. Despite her strong personality, I'd seen Kasumi upset, and I was sure that she'd be feeling the same, now, after having spoken so long about her doubts in regards to going to the chuunin exams. Even though Ujiyasu would speak to her, I'd be sure to remind myself to also speak to her myself to try and soothe her worries.

"I'll be here."

A pause, as I allowed my words to sink in.


"..Come back when you're done"
"If she chooses to come with us; We'll regroup here before setting off."

Of course, I wasn't too sure as to whether she'd want to come back with us or not, but the offer was there. If she'd choose to do so, then I'd allow her clearance to enter the skybox with Ujiyasu. As for myself; I was content where I was, and figured it too flustering to go elsewhere in the arena. Exhaling softly and pressing a single gloved hand against the small of my back, I waited for the blonde haired chuunin to respond. My back aching, perhaps, upon his leave, I would take his suggestion and choose to sit - for a little while, at least.

This year's Chuunin Exams were admittently less explosive than the last event. The fights were short-lived, and not all too exciting. That was, of course, my personal opinion. Perhaps I had been jaded by all the wars I had participated in. But, despite the lack of thrill I had been expecting from these arranged battles, it was nonetheless interesting to watch. I got to see my dear little brother Aota face up against one of my own, a Genin from Kumogakure no Sato. Aota had fought fairly well during the first few moments of the fight, but was eventually caught off guard by the Kaminari no Kuni native, and subsequently disqualified. I'd also gotten to see an impressive display of Katon ninjutsu from a battle between a kunoichi from the Hidden Rock, and a shinobi from the Hidden Mist. Which was, quite frankly, the highlight of the event.

I'd watched these exams from beginning to end, paying close to attention to its players, and their moves. And the power they displayed for their country, hoping to intimidate their rivals, boasting. Competition, there and again, was a good thing. But in some of these shinobi, I could see that they had obviously become possessed by it. This entire event seemed to be a microcosm of the shinobi world. Bloody, and violent, and too prideful to know it's own good. If such a thing as gods existed, it was no wonder why they continued to ignore us. Even after such a disasterous event as the Great Cataclysm, some of us could not let the violence go. And, just like a lot of the young shinobi who had fought in this arena today, some of us inherited it.

As the exams ended, I would stay and see who would be crowned the winners. The top dogs this year, the newest shinobi to attain the rank of Chuunin, paid for in blood and sweat. Chae Yoon, from the Hidden Mist. And Megumi Kobayashi, from the Hidden Stone. As the crowd applauded their achievement, I would remain still, eyes narrowing as I observed these individuals. And, despite the lack of shinobi they were pitted against, I could tell that the two of them were exceptional warriors. It showed in the way they had moved, they way they had executed their techniques, and found-- in one way or another-- a method to advance in each round they participated in. The two of them had caught my interest throughout the entire thing, long before they were applauded for the successful defeat of their opponents. And, a curiosity in them was formed.

Remembering their faces, their attire, their performance, I made sure to take a mental note. Then, as the crowd within the arena began to leave (along with the winners of the exams), I would also prepare to depart. Standing up, I patted Ryusuke on the shoulder. "It was nice seeing you again, old friend. I enjoyed our talk." Issuing a sterling smile, I put my mask back on. With my muffled tone of speaking back in place, I continued. "Remember that tavern we visited in Kusa no Kuni? I'm going to be there during the next full moon. Stop by, if you've got the chance. I'd like to continue our conversation." And, with that, I'd swiftly merge into the crowd walking past our seats. Finding a secluded place to do so, a hallway that lead to the restrooms, I'd turn a sharp corner-- then, simply, disappear.
