Heihō or "Art of War" is a fighting style developed by the Sumi clan when its very livelihood was threatened by oppressors. While they did possess formidable power with their art techniques, they soon found themselves overwhelmed by attackers and lacking a front line to defend those in the back. And though they had some experience in combat, the Sumi clan were but artist in the end. Their forte lay in pursuit of the arts and the expression of their freedom. As a last effort, the Sumi began development of a fighting style that would allow them to face their opponents head-on by translating their drawing skill into a combat style. The sword replaced the brush and the enemy replaced a canvas.
Heihō practitioners were a formidable force in combat with their sword and ink skills supplemented by their art and those of their allies. It was not long before they defeated those who seek to oppress them. After the war, the Heihō style was utilized for a time until it came to be seen as unnecessary. Most of its teachings were lost in time however, there have been whispers that some still practice the Heihō style to this day and carry on its traditions. And though these practitioners may not be held in the highest regard or have come to be seen as nothing more than bloodthirsty warriors, they believe themselves still to be mere artists and not warriors.
