Nevertheless I knew what to do in that instant. I looked on forth into the dark void between the two nonchalantly masking my seals within the darkened portion of my lap after his first sentence.

It didn’t take a genius to confirm the cold feeling creeping down ones spine when they were in this very same situation. Three seconds was all it would take for the rectangular box of paper to manifest and transport within the crevices of the gate – I would have been ready beforehand. My seals would have subsided just as after he finished his last sentence; even before the box reached past the bars. I was ready for the onslaught - I were simply timing the opportune moment to release my defense.

The box’s movement would stop just five meters short of me as I took hold of its structure instantaneously. Within a great burst of chakra would the technique leap back through the bars of the cell. The explosion would occur just outside of the bars – shielding them of my movements for just enough time for me to prepare my next feat – leaping from my last known location onto another hidden from view. The surge of chakra would begin to rush through me quickly as my eyes stayed keen upon the sheet of white before me awaiting an altercation within its thin structure.

The paper's base defense is equal to S-Rank and your technique only works with B-rank and lower techniques, so it basically does nothing to stop the paper from smothering you (and since that was your only defense, its basically a 'critical'). Carry on.

The meager wind did not halt the paper's advance in the slightest. When it formed that 'box' around his frame, just before smothering him, I supposed one could see that he knew it was the end in those eyes of his. It would be quick but immensely painful, when the paper reached him, grabbed hold of one another edge by edge, and squeezed the life out of him. In the first two seconds the paper had squeezed enough to force the air of out his lungs, collapsing them under pressure as their grip pushed his ribcage against them. Then, after that, on the third second the pressure would be too much for his body, and in one big cacophonous noise of crunches, his bones broke under pressure. His ribcage was forced into his chest, puncturing his heart, lungs, and other organs. Simultaneously, the muscles and fat in his body was squeezed up and off the bone, in one big flush of flesh, spewing out of the top and bottom of the paper construction in what could only be described as a fountain of blood. There was literally no zero chance of survival.

"Well. . that's that. We'll have to call someone to clean that up. . "

I did well to watch Youka and her expressions. Though I knew she was by no way squeamish, this wasn't exactly a typical death. I did not know what to expect her to think of it, or how she would react. It was messy, and that was an understatement.

"Youka. . ?"

I waited for any response out of her.

From the various times I had sparred with Asato, I knew that his first line of offense was his use of paper; the Kusanagi was too conspicuous, even in this enclosed room, to be used and for that I was glad. Even still, as his paper started to form I felt my fingers begin to tremble. I had locked the muscles in my legs and the entirety of my body was rigid with anticipation, so I assumed these tiny appendages were the only option for such movement.

The scene that played out before me was over so quickly that, if I had not been an experienced shinobi, I doubt I would have been able to see it at all. A rectangle shot toward the man, through the bars of his cell; he tried to use one of my signature moves, Kazkaeshi, to repel whatever fate awaited him. I knew instinctively that this would be futile, as Asato's paper was strong enough to break through my own barriers, and his did not appear much stronger. The paper exploded into a mass around him, and ... and ...

I didn't understand. My eyes widened as I witnessed the events, but it took several moments longer for my brain to process what I had just seen. I supposed there was a look of utter horror on my face, for the next moment I realized my mouth was open in the shape of a small, shocked o. There was a clamminess to my skin I could not fully describe, and when I finally tore my gaze from the puddle that was left of Fugo, I noticed that the tremors had spread now to my entire body.

The paper had crushed him, not unlike one would crush a bug, and the effect was the same. Blood, guts, innards—they exploded out over the walls and floor like a grotesque splatter painting. "Does this make Asato an artist?" I mused, off-topic; I was in shock, unable to speak or comprehend, and certainly unable to look over at my fiance. In fact, with my legs like jelly, I wobbled back a pace and smacked my back against the wall. It was the only thing holding me up, the only thing keeping me from fainting there and then.

I wanted to. Oh, God, I wanted to. My body wanted to comply, was asphyxiating me, although I gasped for air. I couldn't get enough of it. Had it all been sucked from this tiny room, this room filled with orange and red stains?

I knew I should have insisted more that she leave. I could see the horror in her eyes before she even showed it visibly. Even for the most hardened of ninja this would have been a bit much.

The death was horribly graphic and needlessly violent, and yet somehow I stood unmoved. For a second, It reminded me of just how much of a monster I was despite it all. There was not a single trace of any heightened emotion out of me before, during, or after the man had been killed in such a way. One of the few things that could not be erased, and would thus be a constant reminder of things I had done, was this callousness the likes of which stood above all others.

Of course, there was a reaction once I had seen Youka distraught, my heart aching to fix it, — whatever I had done. This would be the second time I did this to her through my own inability to realize how shocking these sorts of things were. The first time had a lasting effect on her I only noticed later in her being so deathly afraid of the Kusanagi, which ironically I quested for to protect her. I rushed to her side, and whisked my arms around her body from behind, pulling her closely as I turned to face the wall and break her gaze from the pile of mush. There was literally no doubt that she had almost nearly gone into shock from the sight. I became her wall, supporting her entire body-weight if she let me, hoping that the lack of physical burden would ease her mind even the littlest bit.

"You. . stubborn love of mine, I told you to not watch; to go."

Her demeanor was the worst I had ever seen the entire time we had been together, and that alone was a sign of just how much damage I had done to her. My arms tightened their hold as they pulled her closer and closer, until my head reached hers perched just shy of the right side of hers — on her shoulder. My lips almost pressed against her ear as I whispered.

"Please be okay, Youka. It was necessary, there was nothing we could do. You didn't have to see it."

I couldn't help but feel angry at myself, and at the monster I was. Somehow I had forced this reaction into the only person I could have ever said I truly loved, almost knowingly.

The unexpected and warm touch of another seemed to draw me from this pathetic state that had befallen me. I did not react aside from an involuntary jerk of my right hand, at least until I was forced to stare at the blank wall, so normal and pure.

I found that I no longer had to fight to stand up, because the strong arms around me relieved the burden of balance; my body went limp against him and I closed my eyes, very slowly. I expected to see red flash across the back of my eyelids, but aside from the darkness, I could see nothing. His voice, however, was music to my ears—my breathing slowed back down to normal with each passing second that we stayed there, like that.

"W-we're going to be married soon, Asato," I heard myself stammer. My brain picked up on the thought a bit late, so I swallowed hard to buy myself time and moisten my dry throat. "I have to stand by you in all things, even these gruesome sights. You're right, we had no choice ... but so violent, so violent ..."

If anything, I did not understand his use of such a monstrous technique. The death could not have been painless; I estimated that Fugo felt every miniscule jolt of pain as his bones were compressed and, finally, crushed. The sound haunted me, it was unlike any other. Even still, I found myself unable to question my soon-to-be husband. I trusted him fully, his slight insanity and dangerous quirks behind. I love him.

"I'm okay. I've just never seen anything like that before."

I wanted to leave, to go to my quarters and sleep. Asato had taken a nap, but I still had yet to do much of anything since leaving the Council meeting. It was one thing after the other; my body still screamed to be allowed to shut down. To block out my memory of this time, this place.

"Can we go to bed?"

That was the problem though wasn't it, that it was so violent. It wasn't my intention for the sight to be so blatantly brutal, messy, and otherwise shocking. I actually had a very small degree of respect for Fugo, for attempting to get out of a situation by taking matters into his own hands. Had he succeeded, something great could have resulted. Of course, that didn't change the course of events as they played out now. His plight and way was not the correct way. He really was a liability, seen as a traitor to his country. There were likely ANBU and Hunter Nin after him, we'd be lucky if they didn't end up here. I was literally the most wanted criminal in the world, and if they had gotten any wind of my existence here, it would spell more than trouble.

To say I was overjoyed to hear Youka finally talk and calm would have been a rather gross understatement. My reaction her words was a sigh of relief, and a slight squeeze of her tighter. I did not want to hurt my soon-to-be wife — I loved her.

"I will try to. . curb that sort of thing next time."

Try was the operative word there. I didn't know if that was within my own ability to do. I had never consciously thought about the method of dispatching my victims I had taken. It was necessary though, I did not want a reaction like this, and I did not want her getting used to such sights. I didn't want to make her a monster too.

I grabbed her and ushered her into my arms, much in the same way a groom would carry their wife out into their shiny new car. Practice made perfect.

"Yes, lets."

Straight to her bedroom we went.

Every time I was upset he did this, like after our last spar. If anything, he was getting a lot of practice with the bridal-style method of carrying me.

I closed my eyes tighter and wrapped my arms around his neck, enjoying his scent with every inhale. I wanted to kiss him, but that mask ... it was in the way! I would simply have to wait until we had made it to my bed room, where privacy and a nap were assured. Honestly, I felt myself already drifting off, listening to the sound of his footsteps and counting the rhythm of his heartbeats.

He might have been a monster, but he still had a heart. And it was mine.
