It is glory we seek. Men like you and I, and Men of myth. ‘Tis hubris that pushes us on, a thing, a sinister thing, which dooms men like you and I, and men and men of myth. But only the men of myth die in glory, for their hubris itself –is- glory. That hubris of ours is shame.
I wanted glory. Not shame. I wanted a story. That’s part of the reason why I’ve decided to be just a soldier. Read often when I was a kid, saw that the greatest heroes were men of war. So I decided to be a man of war. Becoming a soldier was different from those shinobi, trained by the academy. They wrote, they sat and learned and sparred. Create a clone, pass some tests. Then they become genin, chasing cats and tearing weeds. Soldiers get a spear, learn to stab and fight in formation. Then they’re sent off to die.
And I believed that in that, there was a tale. My own story to tell. Then I realized there wasn’t much of a tale to tell when an arrow hit my gut. The wound wasn’t deep, so I fought. Thought that’s where I’d have my first taste of glory, wounded and fighting. The skirmish lasted for a few minutes. Most of us died. They all died, six of us lived. Ninety four of us didn’t. When I left, I tripped over the corpse of a friend. Fell onto his chest with my knee, heard a cracking sound. Think I broke his ribs.
I returned to the barracks later that night. A story didn’t matter much anymore._________________________________________
Five of the shuriken dashed towards five of the clones targeting Jiyuu– the maneuver was truly insignificant, considering the immense mass of clones, but the Shikigami hoped the maneuver would prove to be of some aid. His hands moved in a dash, the first set of seals completing in one second, and the hand seals that followed after taking just the same amount of time. Twenty-four shuriken scurried forwards from his body, each only one meter wide, but capable of cutting deeply despite their nature – consisting of paper. Each shuriken targeted a different opponent, one per clone – his initial targets the bunshin which targeted him, and those that remained flew towards the remainder which were closest to him to provide some cover for his new ally
The former Hokage was ill at ease, for moment after moment, the Shikigami realized that this matter seemed so far beyond him. Why was he even here, aside from that insatiable urge to find some sick, wretched satisfaction in that macabre fascination he seems to have with the thrill of adventure? That, Jiyuu could not answer, and the inability to do so simply showed what an aimless fool the man was.
